All but "B" 4. All but "A" 2. All but "E" 5. All but "F" 3. All but "E" Spring fix -up list The joys of May! Putting the lawn back in shape, painting the fence and getting back into spring- time pursuits we've thought about all winter. Then, suddenly, it's vacation travel time and the family car still hasn't had its fair share of.atten- tion. It's still running on dirty winter oil, snow tires and winter -weary spark plugs. The cooling system needs flushing and the windshield wipers have seen better days. Sound familiar Surveys point to a growing degree of vehicle ne- glect, says Car Care Council. Self - serve gas stations continue to gain popularity, but customers are re- luctant to lift their cars' hoods. Longer periods between oil changes mean fewer opportunities for the car to come under the close scrutiny of a professional mechan- ic. Further, says the Council, many people arc stretching to the limit the intervals between essential maintcnancc services. A relatively mild winter will en- courage people to put off such work as cooling system service and engine tune-up, says the Council, and the penalty for vehicle neglect can bc costly. Survey answers Responding. to a survey about the customers' vehicle maintenance habits it was concurred that most people tend to drive their cars until something goes wrong. "Most people arc now repairing systems only when breakdown oc- curs," said one independent garage owner. "Eighty percent of customers are postponing all services until break- down at this time, " said another. One respondent described it as 'Mass abuse... nothing is being done until trouble starts." Basic services In addition to a complete under - car inspection, basic services should include, as needed, cooling system pressure test and flush with ncw anti -freeze; oil and filter change and complete engine tune- up. The latter service can amount to an average 11 percent in gas sav- ings on an engine that needs a tuncup. This becomes critical on cars with four cylinder engines, where just one misfiring spark plug will cut engine performance by more than twice as much as it would in a V-8 and increase fuel consumption by at least 25 percent. Preventive maintenance, says Car Care Council, can pay big divi- dends. Retread tires An increasing number of econo- my -minded motorists are turning to Remanufactured and Retreaded tires as a sensible alternative to the high cost of new tires. Thanks to new technology, re- manufactured and retreaded tires look and perform the same as new tiers at a far lower cost, without sacrificing any of the safety and handling features of ncw tires. Remanufactured and retreaded tires are now available for campers and recreational vehicles, as well as 4x4s and other light trucks. High performance tires, mud and snow, and all -season designs are now available on steel belted radial cas- ings. Remanufactured and retreaded tires are used on school buses, tax- is, police and emergency vehicles, and by major airlines. • Specializing in • Dripless oil undercoating • Guaranteed Walker ust res • Batteries • brakes • Servicing ERS IIOLGARAGE LTD. 16 Main St. Zurich 236-4812 Preparing Be ready for the call of summer.
