Plan Osborne celebration
On Monday, March 21, 1988 Us -
borne Township Council held a
public meeting at the Kirkton-
Woodham Community Centre to
determine whether or not Usborne
residents wishcd to plan a celebra-
tion of the municipality's 150th an-
niversary. Council were encouraged
by the support and enthusiasm
shown by the large group of resi-
dents who attended their meeting.
The evening began with a presen-
tation from Fern Dougall, chairman
of the Usborne History Book Com-
mittee, who provided an overview
of the committee's plans for produc-
tions of an Usborne History Book.
Shc whetted the interest of those in
tional funding from their municipal
council.
Following a special thanks to
Fern, Gordon and Debbie and a
presentation to them by Reeve
Prout, residents were asked for their
suggestions regarding events that
might be held in Usborne Town-
ship in 1992. A few of the ideas
were: fireworks in January, a.giant
church service: Wintario night, a
beard -growing contest, Stork derby,
Fiddler's Jamboree, special dances, a
box special, a car rally, a car raffle
lottery as a fund raiser, a homecom-
ing weekend, a garden party, a com-
munity picnic and a theatre presen-
tation.

hotels, inns and taverns in the mu-
nicipality. She also encouraged resi-
dents to begin preparation of their
family and farm history, recom-
mending a write-up of approximate-
ly 450 words. Family and farm
photos would also be appreciated.
Invited guests Gordon Hill and
Debbie Rathwell from the Stanley
Township Sesquicentennial Com-
mittee then took a few minutes to
explain how their municipality
planned and carried out a very suc-
cessful 150th celebration. Special
events began in January and were
held each month during the year,
wiih the anniversary party, parade
and homecoming weekend held on
the Civic Holiday in August. They
emphasized that proceeds from their
fund-raising campaign and other
special events covered the costs of
holding the celebration, and subse-
quently, they did not require addi-
