Host Ecumenical service
The ladies of the Catholic Wom-
en's League of Immaculate Heart of
Mary Church, Grand Bend, hosted
an Easter Ecumenical service last
Thursday on April 7, at • 8 . p.m.
CWL president Rose Vanbruacnc
welcomed the ladies with a reading
"At Eastcrtime". Carole Luther read
."Each spring God Renews His
Promise" by Helen Steiner Rice.
After a general hymn, the other
churches were invited to make a
contribution to the program. Ruth
Macintosh, of the Si. John's Angli-
can Church, read "A Matter of Ex-
perience", a tale of Thomas the
Doubter. We all have to encounter
the Risen Christ in our own way.
From the Greenway United
Church, Iva Lagerwerf read "The
. Oldest- Easter Message". Eleanor
Duric, of the Grand Bend United
Church, read "A Country Chroni-
cle" which recounted the'changes of
spring, to welcome new life,
From the Church of God, Millie
Desjardine performed a :solo "I
Walked Today Where Jesus
Walked," accompanied by organist
Paul Dietrich. Then Rose Van Bru-
acne introduced the CWL members
of the church choir, under the direc-
tion of Delores Tighe. They sang "I
Am the Resurrection" and "Sing a
New Song".
• The guest speaker for the evening
was Father Paul.. Beck, the pastor.
Ile began by explaining thc signifi-
cance of some of the symbols in a
Catholic Church - Pascal Candle is
the light of Christ; the statues, ta-
bernacle and -sanctuary light..
His message was "Ecumenism --
That
That Thcy May All Be One": Fa-
ther Beck referred to Christ's prayer
"Father, may they all be one, I
as am One with You." The sad scandal
of a divided Christianity has lasted
long enough - we should all be one,
as Jesus wished us to be: We owe it •
o Christ to ourselves and to our
children. One day he hoped that
ministers of any faith could cele-
brate the Eucharist in any church.
Ecumenical meetings serve to
break down the myths about each
other, and get us working together
in the community - locally like
Meals on Wheels' globally like
Amnesty international or for Nucle-
ar Disarmament. Only the one Ecu-
menical Church can have the impact
to really change the world.
Following the. speaker, Roberta
Walker performed a solo, "Lord of
the Dance" and did a reading
"Twelve Rules To Live By".
Father Beck -gave a final blessing,
and after a final hymn, all of the la-
dies drove to the Alhambra Hall,
where refreshments were served by
the CWL, in a time of social fel-
lowship. the sum of S77.75 was
collected to be sent to the St. Jo-
seph's Hospitality Centre, the Soup
Kitchen in London.
Church of God
Chairman for the Sunday morning
service at the Grand Bend Church of
God was Millie Desjardine. She led
in the singing of several hymns, in-
cluding "Stand Up, Stand Up for Je-
sus" and the chorus "We arc Stand-
ing on Holy Ground":
Pastor Desjardine's scripture text
was Matthew 16:24-27. In it, Jesus
called His disciples to come to Him
for salvation and to follow Him in
discipleship. Jesus calls us also to
be His disciples, and the first step
in this is denial, then we arc to take
up His Cross, sharing in His suffer-
ing. We must maintain Christian
standards in a world which rejects
them, following Jesus.
The leader for the evening service
was Ilene Desjardine; Lcota Snyder
read a poem. The pastor spoke from
Mark 2: The Kingdom in Conflict.
A time of fellowship was enjoyed
afterwards in the church basement.

Catholic news
The pastor, Father Paul Beck, was
celebrant at all Masses this weekend .
at the Grand Bend Church of the Im-
maculate Heart of Mary. Annie
Baltessen was reader, and Paul Die-
trich, the organist, acted as cantor.
Philip Walker and' Annie Baltessen
were Eucharistic Ministers. At com-
munion, the choir sang "Lord of the
Dance". .
In his sermon, Father Beck dis-
cussed how attending Mass helps to
deepen our faith. We attend church
to get in touch with Jesus through
receiving the Eucharist - we meet
the Risen Lord. Jesus was present
among theapostles long ago He is
present today, and yet how many of
us have doubts, like Thomas did?
We have faithin airline pilots to fly
the plane safely - we have faith in
doctors to heal us, yet we've seldom
met or even seen these people who
so affect our lives. Therefore we
must let God take care of us, in the
faith of Thomas, able to say "My
Lord and My God!"
-Three young ladies, all dressed in
white, made their First Holy Com-
munion, together with their fami-
lies, at the 11 a.m. Mass. Marcia
Denomme of Zurich, Julia Genttner
of Dashwood and Michelle Smits of
Grand Bend•were then calledtothe
altar to receive a rosary from Father.
Beck (a gift from the CWL), and a
warm applause of welcome from the
congregation.
Madelaine Dalton.was selling daf-
fodils after the Masscs, to support
cancer research on the special Daffo-
dil Sunday.

Daffodils in United Church
Dianne Rice and Margaret Desjar-
dine welcomed the congregation at
the Grand Bcnd United Church last
Sunday morning.
Rev. R. Peebles named his ser-
mon, "Resurrection --Now What?"
After Easter, are we in the same old
paths and ruts?, he asked, or do we
have new power, energy, and vi-
sion? The choice is yours! His text
was taken from Malachi 3:13-18
and Romans 8:1-17.
Special music was provided by
Idella Gabel at the piano, while the

version.

Two delegations attend
regular council sessions
Two delegations attended the reg-
ular April 5 session of Grand Bend
council.
Tom Prout, general manager of
the Ausable Bayfield Conservation
Authority, came as requested to ex-
plain the large increase in the 1988.
ABCA levy on municipalities.
Prout conceded the levy had gone
up 10 percent last year, and. an av-
erage of 20 percent this year. In
previous years increases did not
compensate for inflation, and for
the past four years the ABCA has
dipped into its reserves to balance
the budget. -
The Authority is also being giv-
en more responsibilities such as
administering the shoreline protec-
tion program, and being asked by
the provincial government to use
-more local dollars; each, year's
transfer payments are up three or
four percent, while the ABCA's
budget grows by about 10 percent.
This ycar is a catch-up one,
Prout assured councillors, predict-
ing next year's increase will be
much lower.
The second delegation consisted
of Roy Tricbncr and Susan An-
drews from th.e London office of
the Canadian Mortgage and Devel-
opment office. They -detailed some
of the federal programs available to
1. assist low income people in com-
munities with. home ownership,
rental accommodation and. housing
for the disabled. Andrews' specialty
is thc rural and native housing pro-
gram.
Clerk Dianne Mollard notcd tha:
Grand Bend had.used up an initia
allocation of S40,000 in ORP funds
(which assists low income home-
owners with house repairs) and no
applications had been made for any
of the second $40,000 allocated to
the municipality.
Deputy Reeve Dennis Snider
pointed out that Grand Bend's prob-
icm was a lack of building lots.
Most new structures were erected on
the site where the previous building
had been torn down.
Reeve Harold Green said his big-
gest concern was people who abused
low income stipulations by earning
extra unreported money "on the
side". I lowevcr, he promised coun-
cil would examine the programs,
and suggested any information could
be included with the next mail -out
of tax notices.
