ties -- coming at Dad times,"
Guenther said of third period stretch
of game two. "The officiating has
been inconsistent."
After leaving Captain Randy
Kraul in Exeter with a broken jaw,
along with Rob Mackie and Paul
Kalbfleisch, who stayed behind to
take part in John Rowland's wed-
ding, injuries were a concern for the
team.
Jeff Warren, who may have
cracked ribs, was the only player
knocked out of the line-up as. of
Monday. Mike Zorctich suffered a
cracked cheek bone but continued to
play. Pikul is hampered by badly
bruised arms 'and Mark Soehner,
who entered the series with bone -
chips in his foot, has a severe
shoulder injury.
Guenther explained that Camp-
bellton, though capable of playing
a hard-hitting game, was keeping
the pace high on the ice.
"This team we're playing certain-
ly could play the other way (physi-
cal rather than finesse) but they're
playing it wide open just because
we do," Guenther said.
The Mohawk coach speculated
that, with their full compliment
and the home -ice advantage, Mo-
hawks could hand Tigers a loss or
two, but he admitted Monday that
Mohawks were beginning to realize
their limitations.
"They're starting to realize that,
hey -- we've got a good hockey
team, but these guys arc a little
better and maybe we can't quite
compete against them.
Never the less, Guenther vowed
to give it one more shot Monday
night.

Mohawks triumph over Lanark
".It wasa gallant effort," said a
-beaming Jim Guenther after Mo-
hawks outstanding 4-3 victory over
Lanark Flyers Tuesday night when
they captured the Ontario Hardy
Cup final at the Lucan Arena.
"It was honestly, right from the
ground up, a team effort because
my guys are tired; they're sore.
They played right from the bottom
of their hearts and they weren't go-
ing to be denied." •
Guenther had every reason to be
jubilant after Nlohaw%ks won the
fifth game of the series to earn the -
right to go cast to Campbellton
New Brunswick where they will vie
far the Eastern Canadian Hardy Cup
Championship.
Few people who saw the series
opener- Friday night believed Mo-
hawks hada chance of winning the
eastern berth. Lanark, with a hard-
hitting style and an equally hard-
hitting lint -up, seemed too much
for Exctcr in that first meeting.
They were proved wrong with
three block -buster wins Saturday,
Sunday and Tuesday.
Asked what -he expected from the
Eastern series, which began Friday
night .(April 8), shortly after Mo-
hawks: arrived in New. Brunswick+..
Gucnthcr refused to speculate on
their chances.
"At this point in time, let's just
say I'm damned glad to be going.
We'll worry about hockey when we
get there.
On the other side of the rink, La-
nark coach Brian Hart was less en-
thusiastic than his Exeter counter-
part.
Hart, who threw a towel out on
the ice to protest a referee's call
Sunday night, blamed poor officiat-
ing for Lanark's failure to grab the
championship. -
Though penalties were handed out
evenly to both clubs, Lanark was
wounded in the first period by calls
which went against them. Flyers
were assessed a bench minor after
referee Phil Sherwood heard abusive
language apparently coming from
Hart. The Lanark coach claimed the
ownerof the voice was sitting in
the stands behind him.
Mohawks were able to score their
third goal of the game while they
had the man advantage, making it
difficult for Flyers to fight their
way back.
"1t was poor officiating through
the whole series," Hart claimed.

ond.. after the first puck was
dropped, but Dale Gibbon put Exet-
er on the scorebelard when he scored
from Randy Bailey and Jim Roberts
at 2:24.
Campbellton soon overshadowed
that goal with one of their own
from Ghislain Provencher and be-
fore the period was over, Roy had
his second of the night. Roy was
voted most valuable player in the
Quebec Junior Major A league last
season. He was the League's lead-
ing scorer.
Mohawks began to "get their
legs" in the third and by 13:38,
John Kernick had scored from Kris
Bedard and Roberts.
Barry Baynham followed , that
goal with one of bis own at 16:58
from 13rian Mercer and Bailey.
By that time, however, the game
was too far out of reach for Exeter
and they lost 8-3.
Mohawks were a different team
when they skated out onto the ice
Saturday. night. Three quick goals
between 11:23 and 14:35 gave Ex-
eter a substantial lead going into
the second.
Bailey started things off with a
goal. from Al Gates. Roberts con-
nected with Jeff Warren to score at
12:29 and then G.:tes pumped in a
shot after being set up by Bailey.
In the midst of Exeter's scoring
flurry, . wever, Rene Labbe scored
series
for Campbellton on a rush which,
according to Guenther, put the New
Brunswick player five feet off -side.
Thegoal was allowed regardless.
Labbe scored again in the second
to make it 3-2, but Bailey retaliated
to restore Mohawks tw9 goal mar-
gin. pave Randerson and Kernick
drew assists on the play.
Ron Elliott added a goal, again
from Kernick at 14:12 to sustain
Mohawks momentum.
A goal by Howard Connors 14
seconds later kept Tigers within
striking distance; however.
Randerson scored from Quincy
Wilker at 4:17 of the third to give
Exeter a commanding 6-3 lead, but

SPECTACULAR SERIES =- Exeter Mohawks goatie Rick Pikul makes a spectacular effort to stop a shot by
Lanark's Peter Chiarelli during the final game of the best -of -five Hardy Cup series between Mohawks and Lanark
Flyers. This shot got past Pikul but many others didn't. Exeter won the series which earned them the right to play
in the Eastern- Hardy Cup Championship in Campbellton New Brunswick.
Hawks trail Lambeth by two in Junior D final
Things are starting to get tight
for Exctcr Hawks in their best -of -
seven Junior D final series against
Lambeth Lancers. Hawks now trail
Lancers 2-0. Sunday have made the difference.
Though the two teams are evenly "We've outplayed them four out
matched, .a bad first period Friday of six periods, but the bad periods
night and a frustrating third frame have just done us in," said manager
' A GOALIE SHOWDOWN -- Referee Steve Baker tries to convince Exeter Hawks goalie Dave Rook that his
crease is at the other end of the ice Friday night. Rook made an end-to-end dash to take on Lambeth goalie Brian
Monis after he retaliated against an Exeter player who threw a legal body check. The two goalies fought each oth-
er before being broken up by officials.

Dan Brintnell.
Hawks fell behind 3-0 Friday
night and, unable to recover, lost 5-
1 after Lancers added two goals in
the third.
In possession of a 3-1 lead in the
second period Sunday, Hawks al-
lowed penalties to Claim their ad-
vantage. They lost 9-4 after Lamb-
eth pumped in seven third period
goals. -
After Friday's game, coach Dave
Bogart blamed first game jitters for
the team's first period lapse.
"I think our guys were a little bit
tense," Bogart said. "A lot of guys
haven't been this far in the season.
"We didn't start our gamc until
half way through the second."
.Hawks were unable to break
through Lancers defence in the first
period and when they did, goalie
Brian Morris came up with the
saves.
With one minute Icft in the peri-
od, Clarke Singer drove up the ice
with an impressive display of stick,
work, and dropped the puck in the
slot where a trailing Mark Morris-
sey picked it up and took a shot.
But thc effort was fruitless and
Hawks went into the second with-
out a mark on the board.
Lambeth goals came from Jack
Dundas, Scott Pepin and Mickey
Dupuis in the first period.
Exctcr had 17 shots on goal in
the second, but again they were un-
able to beat Morris. Hawks spent a
good portion of.the period with a
man advantage.
Near thc half -way mark of the
third, Hawks began to make some
head -way. George Pratt scored from
Steve Gould while Exctcr had a
man advantage.
Lambeth's Steve Plaskett nulli-
fied that marker with a goal of his
own with four minutes to play in
the game.
Seconds later, the game took on a
new dimension. Scan Whiteford
checked Morris behind the nct,
knocking him to thc Ice. Morris re-
taliated, attacking Whiteford and
drawing both teams into the fray.
Exeter goalie Dave Rook then
charged from the opposite end of
the ice and singled out Morris for a
fight,.
The brawl resulted in 11 game
misconducts -- three of them to
Morris -- and 44 minutes in penal-
ties shared among the two clubs.
Lambeth's Dupuis scored once
more on Derrick Martin to end the
game at 19:34 while Lancers were
on a power play.

punctuated the game.
The game was tied 1-1 at the end
of the first after Exctcr came from
behind with a goal from Ted Hod-
gins from Singer.
A goal by Tom McCann from
S
orts
Singer and Scott Lovic put Hawks
out in front and then Singer added
some insurance, again from Lovie.
Before the period ended, Wayne
Bifolchi scored to keep Lambeth
close.*
Penalties began to take their toll
on Hawks in the third -and soon
their lead slipped away. That
seemed to breed still more penal-
ties.
"We spent the whole (third) peri-
od in the penalty box and it just got
worse and worse and worse," Brint-
nell said. - - -
"We weren't too happy with the
refereeing, but we got carried away.
We were two men short for about
seven minutes in the third and that
just cooked us."
Jeff Seaman tied the game just
two minutes .into the third. After
that, Lambeth goals began pouring
in.
Bob Condon, Bifolchi, Gord Ross
with two, Seaman again and Brian
Minhinnick all beat Martin who
came in to replace Rook near the
half -way mark of the period.
