Cadet Corps offers leadership to all area young people
By Russell F. F inkbeiner
Cadet Master Warrant and
Cadet Commanding Officer
Huron -Middlesex Cadets
This is an article .written to open
thc eyes of tlic public,_ it is NOT a
recruiting ad.
Who arc those young men and
women who don the sharp looking
military uniforms every Thursday
night at the Huron Park Rcc Cen-
tre. They arc the members of the
Iluron-Middlesex Royal Canadian
Army Cadets. Not the future mem-
bers of thc Armed Forces. 'There-
fore, they arc not.part of the Forces
when they join the cadet move-
ment.
The Royal Canadian Army Cadet`
(RCAC) have been making history
in Canada since before the turn of
the century. The first Army Cadet
Corps was formed in 1862 and
since that time many distinguished
Canadians have passed through thc
army cadet ranks. The Army Cadet
movement is a youth -oriented agen-
cy administered by the Army Cadet
League of Canada and the Depart-
ment of National Defence.
'the aims of the RCAC is to offer
a program of personal and social de-
-velopment contributing to the qual-
ities of good citizenship, leadership,
physical fitness, and service to the
community and nation. Thcrc is
also an interest in Canadian Armed
Forces.
Thcrc is a reason behind each
aim. It is to help makc the young
mei and women better people of
our society. So what docs the Army
have to do with us? The RCAC are
not committed to the Armed Forc-
es. It is the Armed Forces that are
committed to the RCAC.
The Armed Forces are committed
in the following ways: to supply
the corps with uniforms and train-
ing equipment; provide pay and al-
lowances for the instructors; pay an
MEMBERS OF HURON -MIDDLESEX CADET CORPS AT ATTENTION
annual grant to the corps and sup-
ply funds for camps -and (onuses for
those who attend camp; provide the
training facilities; and to subscribe
the overall policy for training and
administration of the cadet move-
ment.
The RCAC arc no diffcrcnt from
any other youth group other than
that we wear military uniforms.
Other than that, what do we do that
others groups dont? We team how
10 live in the outdoors, learn the
different types of edible plants, poi-
sonous plants and snakes of Cana-
da, first aid, and, how to read a
map, and use a compass, how to
safely handle rifles, and, become a
good shot.
But what arc Boy Scouts and
Venturers doing? They learn how to
live outdoors, first aid, rock climb-
ing, canoeing and swimming. Just
like the Cadets of Canada. Where is
the difference?
Why do thc cadets take so mtich
legative criticism from the public.
They arc not "war pigs", "war mon-
gers" or " Rambos".. What did they
do to deserve that kind of image?
On closing note 1 would like to
sincerely thank our two. sponsors -
who have given us their support
and encouragement, Royal Canadian
Legion Branch 167 Exeter and 540
Lucan and our affiliated unit 1st
Battalion, Royal Canadian Regi-
ment.
