Whether the living arca is a tiny apartment or a sprawling house - or something in between - the change of seasons invaria- bly necessitates rearranging and re -allocating closet space; often it also ushers in a flurry of reno- vating and refurbishing. From a general brightening of the decor or installing a new pa- tio, to replacing old kitchen ap- pliances or wallpapering the din- ing room, no options "should be overlooked during this period of re-evaluation. Perhaps this is the right time to have hardwood floors sanded down and polyurcthaned to bring out their natural beauty, or maybe the bathroom needs to be re -tiled to prevent moisture from accumulating along poorly grouted edges. Homeowners may find that a new coat (or two) of paint, re- structured landscaping, or even - the construction of a gazebo, are all possible for ways of improv- ing the appearance - and their en- joyment - of their home's exteri- or and grounds. Large or small, it is best to plan each home improvement project carefully before it is un- dertaken. Stopping midway to make a trip to the hardware store for nails of the correct size can be a time-consuming interruption of the home handyperson's allotted time, and it is advisable that all necessary supplies and equip- ment be assembled prior to be- ginning even the simplest of tasks. Listing each item and shop- ping beforehand will help ensure that unexpected problems will be all the less likely to interfere with the painless execution of the project at hand. If supplies are needed for more than enc job, coo&Jinating a sin- gle trip to the lumber yard or home center - or both - will be a significant benefit. One common pitfall for the do-it-your-selfer is the tendency to underestimate the amount of time that a project will take from start to finish. Setting realistic goals and maintaining a reasonable pace will help avoid frustration and exhaustion. Being aware of the limits of one's skills is also important. while it takes no- particular ex - 1 See us at the Home & Garden Show for Interlocking Paving Stone 1 r Free Estimates COBBLE DESIGN PAVING STONE SALES & INSTALLATIONS Cam Steckle Zurich 236-7373 pertise to remove storm win- dows or drive a nail into the wall to hang a picture, not everyone possesses the carpentry skills that are necessary to build a loft bed, or the masonry experience that is required for installing a fieldstone patio.
