Spring cleanup time
to find your papers
Have you ever spent unneces-
sary hours searching for an un-
paid bill? Or have you hunted
endlessly for receipts to justify
expense claims on a tax return or
expense voucher?
If your system for storing pa-
perwork is either nonexistent or
in disarray, spring cleanup sea-
son is a good time to get records
in order.
You may want to reserve one
arca of the home to work on
bills, chcckbock 'balancing, cor-
respondence and other tasks.
However, if space is at a premi-
um, or if other household mem-
bers arc encroaching on your
space or running away with your
supplies, you may want to try
another solution.
Home office accessories can
I:eip }, u keep records straight. A
variety of desk -top organizers and
file boxes from Rubbermaid arc
designed to work where you want
to work.
Constructed of sturdy, molded
plastic, these organizers allow
you to design your own storage
space. File organizers, holds up
to 15 pounds of paperwork and
accommodates hanging files. A
separate compartment in the lid
houses pencils, pens, paper
clips, stamps and other items for
quick access.
The box ha'; a convenient carry
handle, and tucks neatly away in
a closet or under a table when
not in use. This file and smaller
file boxes stack for convenient
storage; latches accommodate
locks.
If you write a large number of
checks each month, you may
want to keep them in a separate
file. A Utility File sized for
holding `. cls has a handy divid-
er to hold them in place when
the unit is partially full. This
file also holds tape cassettes,
coupons or other supplies.
Some people prefer to store
bills and receipts by the month,
with one folder for each period
Others, who may itemize ex-
penses for business or tax pur-
poses, prefer to store records by
category - that is, car expenses in
one folder, household repairs in
another, medical bills in yet an-
other.
However, unless you itemize
your expenses for business or
taxes, the one feldcr per month
strategy should work well.
You'll find keeping bills and
other paperwork organized makes
record keeping much easier. Tax
preparation will also become a
less harried experience. Though
the forms and rules may change
almost yearly, you'll feel more
confident when you can put your
hands on all the needed paper-
work at one time.
