Times-Advocate, 1988-04-06, Page 37Tips to save
cool energy
Don't let utility bills get the
best of you this summer. These
few simple steps will help keep
cool "and save energy at the same
time!
Your air conditioner is a big
energy user. Set the thermostat
on you air conditioner to 78 de-
grees, instead of 72, and you
may cut your electricity use al-
most in half.
Installing an old fashioned
ceiling fan will help circulate
the cold air from your air condi-
tioner. Even when used alone,
ceiling fans use no more energy
than a 15 watt light bulb, and
can reduce room temperature by
10 to 12 degrees.
Sunlight streaming into a
room can create a lot of heat. On
summer days, lower the shades,
close the blinds, and draw the
drapes to protect windows from
the sun. Installing shutters or
awnings also helps.
Avoid, if you can, installing a
room air conditioner in a win-
dow that gets Tots of sun; it
makes the .air conditioner work
harder and wastes electricity. If
you have a choice, put the unit
e
the north or cast side of the
house, or in a shady location.
The single most important
factor in keeping cool and sav-
ing energy, according to the Na-
tional Energy Watch, is to make
sure you have an efficient unit
that is the correct size for the
arca you're cooling.
Room air conditioners are la-
bel:d with an Encrgy Efficiency
Rating (EER). ::This tells you
how efficient the unit is,
