Shipka euchre season closes

.The last euchre tor this season
was held last Wednesday night at
the Community Centre here. There
were 11 tables with 13.games
played. Winners were: Ladies High
Ruth Sheppard, Parkhill, Ladies
low - Florence Martcne,-Dashwood,
Mens High -Earl Morgan, Clande-
boye, Mcns low - Andy Volk,
Shipka. Ladies most. lona hands -
Lily Swarty, Exctcr, Mcns Most

Tlic far south group were in
Charge of refreshments. We have
had excellent turnouts at our euch-
res this season, and on behalf of .the
community, Harold Finkbcincr
thanked everyone for coming; he
hopes to see folks back again next
- year.
The cuchrc group sang "Happy
Birthday" to Dorothy Fenner whose
birthday was on this date, March
30.
School meeting
The annual school meeting for
members will beheld tonight April
6 at Shipka Community Centre at
8 p.m.

Mrs. Annie Zielrnan and Angie
spent the weekend in Leamington
and attended the Janzen family Eas-
ter gathering at the home of Bill
and Ellen Janzcn in Leamington.
Relatives attended from London,

and Zurich, with around 50 in atten-
dance. •
Bill Morenz and friend of London,
visited on Good Friday with Hugh
• and I and had supper with us. An-

London. We surprised Blanche with
a birthday cake for her birthday
April 7. In the social time we
played six hand euchre.

attended the combined Good Friday
service at Grand Bend United, when
St. Johns Anglicans and Church of
God observed the service together.
Rev. Duke Vipperman, of St.
Johns led the service, the sermon
was given by Rev. Stan Desjardine
from Church of God, and Rev. R.
Peebles assisted. •
This service was titled, "The Cel-
ebration of thc Lord's Passion".
A combined choir from the three
churches sang two lovely anthems
"My God, My God" and "When
Evil Men Condemned Him". Idella
Gabel accompanied on the organ.
Appropriate hymns of "Beneath the
Cross" and "When I Survey the
Wondrous Cross" were sung by all.

The first meeting of the Kippen 3
4-11 club was held on March 22 at
Brucefield United Church at 7 p.m.
1Vc started the meeting with the 4 -
II pledge and went over the require-
ments in our books. We then
played some get -acquainted games
where you throw a ball and say the
person's name. Then we,procceded
with the mccting in our books.
The election of officers took
place: President.- Sherri McLaugh-
lin, Vice President - Patricia Wyn-
ja, Treasurer - Chris Gemmel, Press
-Reporter and Secretary - floating.
We ended the meeting by singing
songs from the 4-11 song books
handed toms that night.
The leaders for this club,
"Encountering the Outdoors," are
Barb Moffatt and Pat Predhommc.

The second mccting of the Kip -
pen 3 4-H club was held on Match
29 at Brucefield United Church at 7
p.m. The mccting started with the
4-11 pledge and then we worked on
our books. After the section on
clouds we played a gameto help us
remember the different types of
clouds. This game was taught by
Barb Moffatt. Th`cn Pat Predhomme
showed us some of her nature art
and taught us how to do it. After
we finished our book work, refresh-
ments of popcorn and punch were
served. The meeting ended at 9 p.m.
Next meeting is April 5 at 7 p.m.
at Bniccfield United Church.

Cann, Jean Hodgcrt and Brenda
Hcrn, the May family shower was
held at the borne- of Ombra May,
hosted by Ombra, Sharilecn
McNeill, and Marian Tinney, a
friend's shower held at the home of
Mary Gardiner, hosted by Mary, and
Jackie Richt.
A community shower held in
Thames Road Church hosted by for-
mer neighbours and friends and the

Easter Church News
Some 40 adults and children at-
tended the Easter Sunrise Service
and breakfast on Sunday morning.
Rev. Smits was in charge of the
Easter church service. We read
"The Easter Canticle" from the
hymn book. The choir sang "1 Be-
lieve in a Hill Called Mount Cal-
vary" and "An Eastcr Song". •
Rev. Smits told the children an
interesting story. We sang the chill

clrcn's hymn "Walk Softly In
Snringtimc".

United. Church on Sunday includ-
ing Confirmation and Holy Com-
munion. Rev. Carter chose as her
text "Ile Appeared Also to Me".
There was special music as both
junior and senior choirs rendered
anthems.
The lilies in the church were
placed by Mrs. Jean Palmer in lov-
ing memory of her parents Mr. and
Mrs. George Hepburn, Jack Hep-
bum and Bill Palmer.
Those confirmed at' Centralia

Hibbert UCW theme on Easter

Ilibbert United Church Women
met in the Family Life Centre for
their March mccting which began
with an Easter egg hunt wherein
each one used a Bible verse as a
clue. This prelude was followed by
an Easter devotional period, con-
ducted by Bernice Norris and Marga-
ret Daynard with special music by
guest soloist, Rita Christie.
Guest speaker for the day was
Joan Daynard, who with her family
has just completed a return visit to
their one-time home in Kenya. Us-
ingslides and artifacts to illustrate
her talk, she was able to convey
some of the beauty, charm and
friendliness of this land.
Margaret.Kemp, who chaired the
business mccting commented on
the rcccnt "Waste Management"
evening and showed and described
the various classes of household
garbage.
It was decided to continue collect-
ing coupons and used cards. The so-
cial assistance committee is asking
for old. spools of thread and used
dark pant material. There is no
more used clothing to be received at
this time. We are urged to write let-
ters to M.P.s regarding Sunday
shopping.
A reading describing the work of
Dr. Helen Heuston in Nepal
brought the afternoon to a close.

Doris Nliller visited on Wednes-
day with Dorothy Duncan, Kirkton.
Mis. Vcrle Mahan presidcdfor the
Agriculture mccting of the Staff
Women's Institute when they met
in the township hall on Wednesday,
March 23 at 1:30 p.m. Vcrlc
opened with the institute Ode and
Mary Stewart Collect and a poem
zntiticd "If you have a garden".
Twclvc members answered the roll
call by naming something grown in
quantity locally that we cat.
Vcrlc had a most interesting talk
on goats. She told about a couple
near Milbank that had a milking
herd of goats, shipping their milk
to Springfresh Dairy in Kitchener
and also about a local girl Donna
Waddells' herd of milking goats.
Donna ships her milk to Ilagers-
ville Dairy and bottle feeds the
young kids. She mentioned several
cheeses made with goats milk, also
ice-cream and yogurt, and hid some
festa cheese at the meeting for all
to try and enjoy.
Vale also demonstrated making
"egg heads" for Easter, and follow-
ing the mccting the members en-
joyed trying their hand at painting
some faces on eggs. Kay Smalc
gave some interesting garden tips.
Roberta Templeman presided for
the business portion opening with
"The legend of the Dogwood".
Minutes were read and approved
and the treasurers report given. An
invitation, to the annual daffodil tea
at Main' St. United Church • on
April 9 was acknowledged as well .

homemad gifts being contributed
to the ladies' tents at the plowing
match this fall.

South District executive mccting
saying the District Annual will be
hosted by Sebringville Womcn's
institute on Tuesday May 17 at the
Scbringville Community Centre.

Margaret Kemp will be speaking
on the resolution submitted by
Staffa Womcn's Institute on agri-
culture. She presented her remarks
for discussion at the meeting.
Grace Kerslake reported on the
committee mccting regarding cele-
bration of the 85th anniversary of
Staffa Women's institute. Tenta-
tive plans were :nun for the cele-
bration on Wednesday May 25
from 2 to 4 p.m. in the township
hall, with invitations being extend -
cd to former members and other
guests.
Members decided to set up a dis-
play on the Old Country Store
themeat the Mitchell Fall Fair.
