Ottawa crop A quick look at Lanark Flyers line-up for this week's All -Ontario Hardy Cup best -of -five series gives you a pretty good indication of the kind of team Exeter Mohawks are up against. Lanark came second in theft- league henleague last year, the only team to beat Smith's Falls who went on to play in the Eastern Hardy Cup Championship after defeating Brant- ford Motes Clamatos in the Ontario final. They were good. Their league is gone now, and La- nark is an entirely new team -- an Sports amalgamation of their Senior .AA organization. Only two of the players from last year's team cracked the line-up this season. With the Ottawa Senior Hockey struggling to stay alive, Flyers league has been given a one year sabbatical -- time to reorganize and come up with six teams for next season. But in the mean time, they have formed a Hardy Cup challenger out of the pieces. "Without a league, it's hard to put lines together," admits Flyers man- ager Grant Hobbs. "But we're going to be competitive, that's for sure. "We've got about eight guys who can put the puck in the net at any given time." - Lanark, given special considera- tion because of the state of their league, was granted a bye into the Hardy Cup Ontariolseries. Hobbs notes that the team has been.practicing together on a regu- lar basis since January. They are moulding together nicely. "I was wondering how it was go- ing to come off because they all used to kill each other ( when they opposed each other in league play). 13ut _they. like playing together," Hobbs said. Though the team has played just three exhibition .games together, Hobbs likes what he sees. Flyers delivered" a shattering 18-5 loss to Queen's University recently. They followed that performance with a pair of losses to Dundas Real McCoys who were sporting a full line-up, but Lanark showed promise in both games. Hobbs claims the team is big, strong and fast. "We can play both ways,"_ Hobbs said. "They're a good fast -skating team. We're not out there to rough Please turn to page 2A Who's Hardy? Friday night when Exeter Mohawks skate out onto the.ice at the Lu - can Arena to face Lanark Flyers, they will be ready to fight for a berth in the 21st Hardy Cup Championship. • 'Mohawks are the sole survivors in the Ontario Hardy Cup play - downs. They have emerged as challengers from a group of 12 participat- ing teams across Ontario to take op Lanark, a.representativc team of the Ottawa District I-ockey Association which spawned the Hardy Cup On- tario•champs last year in the form of Smith's Falls. But what is this thing, the elusive Hardy Cup? • The Hardy Cup Championship was introduced by the Canadian Ama- teur Hockey Association in 1968. The trophy was named after Dr. W. G. Hardy of Alberta, a man who spent many -years contributing to Sen- ior hockey in that province. Though originally an open competition for Senior AA teams, the Cup has been pursued by OHA Senior A and Senior B teams for the last two seasons. Because the Ontario teams are competing against a higher level of competitors in the series, they arc permitted -to sign four strengthening players from their respective leagues. In -1987,. to deaf with added pressures beingplaced:on.players, the Ca-_ nadian Amateur Hockey Association abandoned the national champion - Ship concept for the Hardy CO Championship and established a pro- cess for declaring an east and west co -champion: . Players involved in the Cup competition have both work and family commitments which make it difficult to devote the time_anii_.tnoney to a final series. The Hardy Cup has not 'totally abandoned its natiorral status, howev- er. The Eastern Canadian champs and the Western Canadian champs can play for a national title, but on a voluntary basis. An OHA team has claimed the cup only two times in its long histo- ry, and those wins have both come in the last two years. In 1982, Georgetown Raiders broke the ice as it. wcrc, by capturing the National cup. Dundas Real McCoys took the trophy in 1986. Only the Charlottetown Islanders have wort the Cup more than once. They claimed the championship title in 1981 and 1984. Sept-Iles was the first team to win the Hardy Cup in 1968. Hawks take lead in Brussels series Exeter Hawks have taken a two game lead in their best -of -seven Western Junior D final after win- ning game one 7-5 at home and then travelling to Brussels where they pulled off a 5-3 victory on for- eign ice. Scott Lovic had a four point night with two goals and two as-' sists when the two teams met for the first time in post season play at the South Huron Rec Centre Friday night. Tcrry Casey, who had two goals and one assist in the effort, came up with two key plays to put Exeter over the top. Hawks built a 6-2 lead by the end of the second, but some uninspired play in the third allowed Brussels to creep up. The score was 6-5 and Brussels was pressing with an extra man when Casey stole the puck at centre ice, swooped in from the right side, fended off a Bulls defend- er and punched the puck into the empty net. That gave Exeter the insurance they needed for the final minute of the game. It was Tom McCann who opened the scoring just 22 seconds into the first period. McCann pumped in a shot after picking up a pass from Mark Morrissey and Casey to put Hawks on the hoprd. • ND TO END -- Above Exeter Hawks goalie Dave Rook makes a sprawling save. At the other end of the ice, ook's counter -part, Jeff McGavin, is being pressured by Exeter's Steve Gould. Brussels Ron Strome tied the game at 6:26 but Lovie put Exeter: in front again, scoring from Jon O'Connor and Dean Schram. Greg Cruninicc tied -the game 2-2 with a goal for Brussels two min- utes later but before the period end- ed, a goal by Brent Murray from O'Connor and Lovie had re -asserted Hawks lead: . Hawks dominated the second peri • - od. Lovic scored near the halfway mark after picking up a pass from O'Connor and Scott Bogart. Schram was able to capitalize on . a power play situation, scoring on a pass from Lovic and Steve Gould. Casey came up with the puck near centre ice while Hawks were short-handed and began to stick - handle his way through a pack of Brussels players. He soon found himself alone behind Bulls defence. and he blasted the puck past goalie - Greg McClement-who hhd replaced a haggard Jcff McGavin mid=way through the second. Brussels began their third period march with a power play goal from Kevin McArtcr. Tim •Fritz and Strome added singles to bring their team within one goal of Hawks be- fore Casey sunk his final puck of the night. • Dave Rook withstood 28 shots on net for Exeter while Hawks got 'just 21 shots on the Brussels goal. Hawks 5 - Bulls 3 Hawks out -shot Brussels 34-23 when. they met on Bulls home turf Stinday afternoon. Again, it was Casey who cemented the win with - two goals in the third period. H:fwks fell behind 2-1 in the first, but rebounded in the second with a pair of goals to tic the game 3-3. Casey's pair •of third period markers delivered the team to their second straight win of the -series. Jcff Anscm put -the gears in mo- tion at . of the first whcn he scot on a pass from Jcff Pfaff and Scan Whiteford. Penalties took their toll en Exet- er as the period wore on. Crummcc scored two power play goals before thc•first buzzer went. Lovic was able to capitalize on a power play in the first minute of the middle period.
