LUCAN LETDOWN -- Goalie Paul Farrell's dejected stance says it all during a Western Junior D playoff game
against Lambeth Friday night in Lucan. Irish lost the game 9-8 in the second overtime period, then went on to lose
the series four games to one to Lambeth Lancers, despite valiant attempts by Farrell and_his team mates.
Season over for Irish
Lambeth Lancers brought the sea-
son to a close for Lucan Irish Sun-
day when they skated to a 7-3 win
in game five of the best of seven
series.
Irish, fourth in their Western Jun-
ior D division, put up a good fight
against the fust place club, winning
once and coming close on several
other occasions, but by Sunday,
they had used up their reserves.
"The kids showed a lot of effort
Sunday night in Lambeth but we
just couldn't come back( from an
upsetting 9-8 loss in double over-
time Friday)," said Jim Hearn, gen-
eral manager of the Lucan team.
"We were disappointed at the way
we played that the series didn't go a
little longer, but they're (Lambeth)
a first place club and they played
like it.' `
Asked if a weaker opponent
would have meant a longer season,
Hearn explained that the league is
fairly strong throughout. Gaining a
playoff position in the last five
games of regular season, Irish con-.
sidered themselves lucky to be there
at all.
"We were fortunate just to be in
the playoffs," said Hearn, "Lambeth
was first, but all the teams would
have been tough."
"They knew they were in a series
with us. A few breaks. either way
and it might have been different."
t Irish got few breaks in the final
portion of Friday night's game. Af-
ter continually tying the game and
then -falling behind by one goal,
Lucan went ahead 7-6 with six min-
utes remaining in the match on a
goal by Paul Deplancke.
• They were unable to hang onto
the lead, however, and Lambeth tied
things up with less than two min-
utes to play.
That was to be the pattern for the
night.
In a ten minute overtime, Irish -
again took the lead on a goal by
Jesse Crawford, but with 1:03
showing on the clock, Lambeth's
Bob Condon scored with an easy
shot from the blue line and the
game was tied again.
Lambeth came out of the second
overtime period with a win on the
strength of a goal by Scott Pedin.
. See -saw scoring
Wayne Bifolchi started the game
with the only goal of the first peri-
od for Lambeth -- the first marker
of a hat trick that night.
Bifolchi made it 2-0 in favour of
Lambeth with his second goal.of
the game at 4:05 of the middle peri-
od, but Lucan was quick to reply
with a power play goal from Jamie
Greig.
Penalties continued to haunt
Lambeth as Scott Denomy potted
the tying goal while Lucan had a
man advantage. But a power play
turned sour when Irish goalie Paul
Farrell came out of his net to break
up a one-on-onesituation between
Denomy and Mike Litke.
Farrell blocked the first shot but
Litke picked up his own rebound
and found himself in front of an
empty net.
Denomy slid across the gaping
goal -mouth too late and Lancers
had restored their lead.
That goal seemed to shake Farrell
and he allowed two more goals be-
fore the period ended. Despite a
goal by Tim Hayter, Lucan went
into the third trailing 4-3.
Gord Ross pumped in a goal un-
assisted in the first minutes of the
final frame, and it began to look as
if Lucan was finished for the night,
but goals by Denomy, Greig and
Tim Hayter tied the game 6-6.

Hawks take lead in series
Exeter Hawks didn't waste any
time taking control in the best -of -
seven Western Junior D semi-final
against Mitchell which began Fri-
day night at the South Huron Rec
Centre.
Exeter claimed a 9-5 win over
Mitchell at home and then travelled
north and underlined their superiori-
ty with a 9-7 win on foreign ice.
Friday night, Exeter took a 5-2
lead in -the first period, largely on
the strength of three goals by Steve
Gould.
Gould scored a fourth marker in
the second and claimed two assists
over the course of the night, under-
lining his importance to Hawks,
who spent the last portion of the
season without him because of sus-
pensions.
Clarke Singer wasn't far behind
Gould in the points category. He
scored two goals and picked up
three assists.
Gould started things off with an
unassisted goal just 38 seconds into
the game. He followed it with two
more and then Singer and Scan
Whiteford added singles.
Mitchell goals in the first period
came from Dave Campbell and
Dean Simpson.
In the second, it was Gould who
drew first blood again, this time af-
ter 3:56 had elapsed.
One minute later, Jeff Ansems
added a goal from Scott Lovie and
George Pratt.
Penalties took their toll on Exeter
mid -way through the second when
Derek Simpson and Campbell
scored while Mitchell had a man ad-
vantage.
Lovie and Singer added third peri-
od goals to round' out the Exeter
scoring.
Campbell scored once more for
Mitchell with one second left to
play in the game.
Dave Rook and Derick Martin
shared the net minding responsibili-
ties for Exeter, facing just 19 shots
between them. Exeter had 24 shots
on goal.
Exeter 9 - Mitchell 7
Mitchell came very close to tying
the series Sunday when the sched-
ule took them home. A second per-
iod goal scoring flurry which saw
Mitchell pump in five goals, al-
lowed them to tie the game 6-6 af-
ter trailing 3-1 at the end of the .
first. '
Exeter tied the game before the
period ended however, and -- faced
with a mid -game slump the likes of
which plagued them in the final
stretch of the season -- they re-
bounded with three third period
goals to pull out their second win
of the series.
George Pratt led Exeter in scoring
with three goals and one assist
while Gould turned in another fine
performance with two goals and .
two assists. Ansems drew three as-
sists.
Mark Morrissey opened the first
with a goal at 1:38 but it was al-
most immediately answered by
Mitchell's Derek Simpson.
Pratt potted his first of the night
while Exeter had a man advantage
and then Gould connected with
Dean Schram and Ansems to score
before the period ended.
Four of the five Mitchell goals in
the second period were scored while

Petites advance to finals
Saturday was quite a day for the
Exeter Petite Ringette team. Not
only did they beat Goderich 5-3 to
stay alive in the Semi-finals but
they shocked their coach Michele
Richt with a surprise shower.
A 7-3 win over Goderich Sunday
gave Exeter a berth in the finals.
Exeter started the scoring with a
quick pass from Chris Morgan to
Cara Gardner who scored.
Shortly after, Gardner assisted Da-
nielle Miners on a goal at 14:16.
The next goal came at 7:47 from
Helen Theo on a pass from Carol-
lyn Remmelzwann and Carrie
Simpson.
Goderich picked up two goals to
stay close to Exeter, but Gardner
cushioned the lead when she scored
on a pass from Leeann Foster.
C1dcrich managed one more be-
fore the end of the first, but that
was their last goal of the game.
A goal by Carrie Simpson from
Gardncr summed up the scoring in
the second. Again, the,goaltenders
kept the game close.
The win by Exeter forced a third
and deciding game in Goderich Sun-
day.
Exeter had to fight for the win
Sunday when Goderich jumped into
the lead with two goals before Car-
rie Simpson, Suzanne Stecuik and
Judi Wilson combined their efforts
for a goal.

eter, but Petites started a come

period with three • goals. Theo,

Carollyn Rimmelzan, Carrie

Exeter started they didn't stop. The
final score was 7-3.

Waxers forced out in Shamrock tourney
. Exeter Novice Waxers came up
short in the Shamrock league
playoff tournament at the South
Huron Rec Centre Sunday when
they dropped a 5-1 decision to
Parkhill.
Exeter's only goal of the game
came from Ryan Beckett in the
first period after he picked up a
beautiful pass from Brycc Hann
and scored to tie the game 1-1.
Parkhill regained the lead before
the end of the period and gradually
increased it, out -playing Waxers
in the second and third.
Earlier in, the week, Waxers
claimed a 1-0 win over Forest in
OMHA playdowns, increasing
their OMHA playoff record to five
wins, three losses and one tic.
Jason Lindenficld was in goat
for the shut -out. Lindenficld was
constantly pressured in the early
portions of the game, but he de-
nied Forest the satisfaction of a
goal.
After two complete periods of
scoreless hockey, Jeff Sararas pot-
ted what was to be the winning
.marker after he picked up a pass
from Chad Gilfitlan.
Saturday, Waxers took part in
Clinton Minor Hockey Day, play-
ing an exhibition game against
Clinton and coming out on the
low side of a 5-4 score.
Clinton jumped into a,3-0 lead
in the first period and then made it
5-1 in the second, but Waxers ral-.
lied in the third, narrowly missing
a tic.
Ryan Soldan was the first to put
the puck in the net for Exeter. He
scored from Rob Lynn and Gilfil-
lan early in the second.
Beckett opened the scoring for
• Waxers in the third after he' con-
nected with Dave Farquhar and
Soldan.
Hann pumped in a shot near the
half -way mark of the period to
make it 5-3. Lynn and Chad Dal-
rympk. drew the assists on the
lay.
With 5:43 remaining in the
game, Farquhar scored from Beck-
elt to bring Exctcr within one
goal of a tic, but Waxers were un-
able to push for the single point.

Mohawks future looked shakey in
the Central Senior B semi-finals
Tuesday night at the South Huron
Rec Centre when Exctcr allowed
Harriston Blues to walk away with
a 7-4 win. That win gave the much
improved Blues a 2-1 lead in the
best -of -five series and left Mohawks
up against the ropes as.thcy went to
Harriston Friday.
Exeter came through in Harriston,
pulling a 6-1 win out to tic the ser-
ies.
Thcy returned to Exeter Sunday
night where the home ice advantage
proved valuable. Exctcr won the
game 4-3 and clinched the series,
earning a berth in the Central Sen-
ior B final. .
"I think they gave us all we could
handle and 1 think we were lucky in
a sense to be able to come back,"
said Mohawks coach Jim Guenther.
With the Hardy Cup still fresh in
their minds and a season of easy
wins behind them, motivation be-
came a problem in the Harriston
series.
"We played them (Harriston) all
year without any great problems

The coach is hopeful that similar
problems don't arise in the up-
coming Central final against Dur-
ham Huskies -- the only team to
beat Mohawks in regular season
play. That series begins Friday
night.
"I hope we don't have to come
from behind again," Guenther said.
"The motivation should come be-
fore game one -- They know what
happens to them if they don't get
up for it."
In Mohawks favour going into
iiia Durham series is the fact that
the team is back at full strength af-
ter recovering from a series of indi-
vidual injuries.
Dcfenceman Mark Soehner re-
turned for the final two games of
the Harriston series and figured
prominently in the deciding wins.
Goalie Rick Pikul and centre Jeff
Shipley also added strength to the
line-up.
