Seven persons convicted on a variety of
Seven persons appearing before
Justice of the Peace Doug Wedlake
in Exeter court on March 1 were
convicted on a variety of charges.
Henry Gcrrits, RR5 Clinton
pleaded guilty to using defaced val-
idation. Gcrrits had been stopped
on Highway 4 at Hensall on Feb-
ruary 24 while police were con-
ducting a safety check. His vehi-
cle, driven by another Clinton
resident, had no 1988 validation
sticker, the ownership was not
signed, the sticker on the front
plate was only partially intact, and
both plates were wired on.
Gcrrits' wife appeared to say the
truck had been found smashed after
being stolen last October. No one
had checked the plates after the ve-
hicle had been repaired and put
back on the road in early Fcbntary.
Wedlake took this into considera-
tion, but as there was no valid
sticker on the ownership and the li-
cence sticker was damaged, a con-
viction was registered. However,
although the allowable fine ranges
from S50 to $500, because of the
circumstances Wedlake lowered
this to S20. The fine was paid that
day.
Katherine Van Roestel, Huron
St., RR3 Exeter, pleaded guilty to
failing to stop before reaching the
school crossing at Main and Vic-
toria Streets on January 24 when
the crossing guard had her sign up.
Southbound traffic had halted, but
a northbound car did not. The ac-
cused was apprehended later and ad-
mittal she had been the driver.
A fine of $53.75 was imposed,
and paid.

John P. Kochan, 3 York Cres-
cent, Hensall, was found guilty of
speeding at 90 kph in a 60 kph zone
at 7:00 p.m. at Thames Rd. E. and
Highway 23 on January 18.
The accused was locked in at 90
on hand-held radar while passing a
parked cruiser, passing two posted
60 kph signs on the way.
Kochan asked to see the radar, in-
sisting he was only going 60. At
the cruiser the other officer acciden-
tally lost the reading by bumping
the switch when he picked up the
device.
Wedlake handed down a convic-
tion, stating that no evidence was
given to back up Kochan's state-
ment, and officers have no require-

cused person. Kochan also has
three prior speeding convictions.
He was fined $48.75 and given 15
days to pay..

100 kph in an 80 zone on December

him, as the name on the ticket and
the one on his driver's licence were
not the same. He was found
guilty, fined $33.75 and given 15
days to pay.
• Robert Earl Thiel, 477 Queens
Ave, London, was found guilty on

One accident
Only one accident was investi-
gated this week by officers of the

driven by Richard Kootstra, RR 5
Clinton and the vehicle went out
of control.
A load of corn on the truck
spilled onto Highway 84, about a
half kilometre west of Hensall.
In addition to 31 general occur-

and was taken to jail, as neither the
detox centre nor the hospitals would
take him. He was fined S53.75 and
given 15 days to pay on the second
charge.
John Francis Powell, London,
was found guilty in his absence of
using an unauthorized plate, and
driving with no insurance. An offi-
cer stopped at the lights at the inter-
section of Highways 4 and 83 on
January 4 asked for a check on the
plates, which showed they belonged
to McMaster Pontiac Buick in Sirn-
coe. The vehicle had been pur-
chased from that dealership in Au-
gust. The plates' validation had
expired on August 18, 1987. Insu-
rance had expired October 18, 1987.
The plates were seized, and Pow-
