Good year for insurance company At Monday's annual meeting of the Usborne and 1 hbbert Mutual Fire Insurance Company, policy- holders teamed of another very suc- cessfully financial year in.1987. President Lorne Feeney of RR 2 Dublin told the •25 in attendance, "\Vc had another good year with a - - good surplus. The only bad news is the resignation ofdirectorRob• - ert Chaffs because of illness." - The financial report presented by - secretary-managcr.Mike Cacrs indi- cated a net income of $1,016,556. This is only a slight reduction of S67,000 from the previous year: \Vhile net premiums were up by - S121,000 over the year 1986, the net income was reduced by a higher . amount of claims paid out.• Cacrs said," The number of claims this past .year Was down to 269 from the 1986 figure of 300, but we had one major fire. This - brought the overall total to S471,217. A year . earlier the claims figure was s289,595". The secretary -manager went on to say that operating costs were 22' percent of premiums written. -Hc added, "That's one of the lowest in the province. Some companies run as high as 61 percent with thc av- erage alxwt 35": Due. to the good surplus, direc- tors decided to continue the policy of returning refunds to the custom- . crs of 30 percent of their premi- ums, providing they have been po- licyholders for at least three years. It's hard to believe that we made it through January with very tittle bad weather: There is little danger of snow shovels rusting now. We started off last week with the Legion Ladies hosting our Monday night bingo. Thanks to Dorothy Pfaff and• her able assistants: Every- one enjoyed the evening and certain- ly the excellent assortment of priz- es. • The Exeter Cubs held their car race finals in the .Lodge dining room. The boys have gone to a tre- mendous amount of work in build- ing and painting their cars. Several of our seniors wcrc able to join in on the last race. Thanks 10 the Cubs for a very entertaining evening and the delicious lunch aftcrvard. - - Thc Ilurnn District Oddfcllows and Rebekahs - Exctcr Branch have donated a Big Eye high intensity table lamp. Through their gcncresi- ty those 'vith failing eyesight will be abletoread more easily. Thanks to the Oddfcllows and Rebekahs for remembering the seniors at the Vil- la. - Rev. 1 Ienry VanEsscn conducted our weekly worship service. Thanks to him as he visited in both the Lodge and Nursing 1 thine. Cupid did his best at the Villa as we finished off the week celebrating Valentine's Day. On Friday; sweet- : hearts were treated to a dinner in honour of Valentine's Day. Lodge anti Nursing Home celebrated with parties: Thanks to Dorothy Bullock for providing piano music in thc after- noon. In- the evening we enjoyed several poems; quizzes and a sing- song. The cookies served wcrc baked by the ladies themselves. - The resident council of the Villa arc looking into new projects for the spring. We would like to obtain an aquarium. If anyone knows of one at a reasonable price or to give away, please phone the Villa at 235-1581. . - Thought for Valentines's Day: The. love in your hearts wasn't put there to stay. Directors re-elected for three years were Robert Gardiner and Jack Hodgert while Joseph Chaffs was appointed to fill the remaining year in the term held by his father. Gardiner has been a director for -30 years. Other directors in addition to president Lome Feeney and the re- elected ones are vice-president Jack I larrigan and Lloyd • Morrison. Company agents are Ross Hodgert, Joseph Uniac and John Moorc. Classes offered Did you always want to quilt or knit but never could catch on? Or do you want to improve. your skills? Classes -are beginning this week at Family Heirlooms in Grand Bend, for knitting, smocking, quilt- ing, adult sewing, tatting, cross- stitch, and crochet; both beginners and intermediate. Some classes arc one -session, to make a pillow, or a T-shirt; others require 4 to 6 classes, beginning February16 and February 17; others don't start until March. - - If you're interested in acquiring any of these skills, register now for a class; just call 238-5493, Family Heirlooms Boutique for the class date and time. First meeting Crediton 4-H The first meeting of the Crediton V 4-H club was held on Tuesday. February 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Kaak residence. Our leaders for this club are Dianne Kaak and Linda O'Rourke. The executive, as cho- sen from the group of six mem- bers, is as follows: Jeanette Kaak, President; Kim Hoffman, vice- president; Deb O'Rourke, secretary and LeanneDietrich . press reporter. The other two members are Jaque- line Vandenburk and Rosanne Die- trich. This club deals wjth Personal Fi- nance, and topics covered at the first meeting, "Thinking About Money", included goals, values and resources and how they influence our spending and how to make wise financial decisions with. re- gards to spending money. Other ar- eas discussed included the upcom- ing Farm Show in London, the possibility of getting -a bookkeeper to speak to us at an upcoming. meeting as well as the opportunity .to become a junior leader. Home activities for next week -involved coming up with a club name and tide page, assessing our personal assets and liabilities and complet- ing the chart concerning our per- sonal short term and intermediate goals. - We also received two handouts concerning the importance of set- ting goals. We finished off the evening with a snack, of popcorn and lemonade, while we browsed through the new 4-H catalogue. Next was meeting will be held on Monday, February 16 at 7:30 p.m. at O'Rourke's.
