K -W winter carnival a great
Despite cancellation of some Sat-
urday events, the 1988 edition of
the Kirkton-Woodham Winter Car--
nival. proved to be one of the best
ever.
Carnival chairman Brian Hardc-
man said he was pleased with the
attendance at the Saturday night
Quccn of the Carnival contest and
Sunday's many activities. Hardeman
-added, " It was one of the best."
Stormy weather Saturday after-
noon_ cancelled the usual snowmo-
bile novelty races, but the rest of
the weekend made up for that loss.
Saturday night last year's Queen
Marianne Dcn Otter crowned the
new Queen Carolyn Dykeman. The

.. Queen Carolyn Dykeman was

phone System and her speech was
based on Friendship. Princess An-

Dave Williams was co-ordinator
for the Quccn contest and Bruce
hunter was master of ceremonies.
The large trophy to the winner was
presented by carnival chairman
Brian harderian.
A large crowd attended the Sunday
morning church service: In charge
wcrc Rev. Bill Jones the United
Chruch and Rev. Bev Wheeler of
the Anglican charge.

presented Celebration '88 medals
and certificates to a number of
township residents.

The top female and male athletes
were Carrie Simpson and Mark
Foster. Charles and Connie Kcmick
wcrc selected as volunteers, Wayne
Rowe as coach, Jeff Borland as an
official and sponsor Bill Wag-
hom.They received medals.

testants for the ski rally and the car
rally attracted 107 contestants.

The first carnival was he Id in
1970 and was sponsored by a newly
formed carnival committee. 1t was
h; Id in the old Lodge hall, prior to
the.Cunumunity Centre being built.
The original purpose was to pro-
vide funds for Boy Scouts and Girl
Guides in the Kirkton and \\'ood-
Itam areas :Ind to assist in capital
expenditures -for other community
projects.
