Wallace named manager A former Exeter harness race trainer and driver Jim- Wallace has been named general manager of the Sudbury Downs track. Wallace said he was as surprised as anyone when told Tuesday he was the new general manager. Wal- lace replaces Grant Wade. "This was as sudden to me as it was to Mr. Wade," said Wallace, driver, trainer and barn -arca superin- tendent at the track last year. "I knew I was going to be moved into something else, but I had no idea this was it." Wallace and Sudbury Downs own- er J.C. Mac[saac have been close friends since Maclsaac opened the harness racing facility in 1974. For the past seven years Wallace trained the horses in Maclsaac's stable, but now he says he'll have to give up training and driving. "I'm hanging up my colors and helmet. I won't have enough time on my hands to do that too.' Wallace is quick to admit he has a lot to learn about running a race track. "I'm a little leary about some of the things I don't know about. I know very little about the parimu- tuel (betting) end of it. "My feeling is I should know eve- ry aspect of the raceway, to be on top of it, and to be available to the public at all times." There are a few things Wallace would like to change at Sudbury Downs, especially management - horsemen relations. "The two haven't always seen cyc to eye on things but I'd like all that to change. Being a horseman my- self, 1 know what they feel about certain matters." Wallace said he hopes Wade doesn't harbor any ill feelings to- ward him. "We got along great, but I'm a little afraid he might think I've un- dermined him. I would never do that, especially to a man that knows his business like Grant." Wallace was the second -leading driver in top -three finishes at the track last year. He was third as a trainer in top -three finishes and fourth in earnings iN:w'virii:'.v:.•n n.:. :n.:ii,w:i}i1 :?:vv.f }.'¢'.: F.. r.... .. i5:'. ,j• Scotiabank RRSPs Rates as high as: 1 O .5 • Fixed • Variable • Daily Interest • Mutual Funds Instant Tax Receipts • RSP Loans Available • We will handle transfers from your present plan/retirement fund • Contact RSP Centre Manager John Sonser 280 Main St..
