Last weekend Superbowl, this weekend Ringette
Another Superbowl, another
- blockbuster Pepsi commercial.
I couldn't help wondering what
was what while I hid my head
under a pillow in the second
quarter of the big game Sunday.
There was Doug Williams,
writing his name in bold print,
letter by letter, in all the NFL
post season record books. Play-
ing with a hyper -extended knee,
throwing for yard after yard, all
the time nibbling away at a few
"racial barriers.
And there was Michael J. Fox
selling Dict Pepsi in a commer-
cial which must have had a pro-
duction budget close to that of
the game itself.
Cars, financial plans, Diet
Coke, Dict Pepsi, Pontiacs and
more Pontiacs. It occurred to me
that Williams and the -boys are
the biggest "wrapper" in the his-
tory of television.
For many, the commercials
were more interesting than the
game anyway.
After John Elway stepped onto
the field, dropped into a shotgun
formation and fired at Ricky Nat-
ticl, it was all over. That's what
1 said ever so smugly.
That's what the announcers
said too.
No team has ever- recovered
from a 7-0 deficit in Superbowl
history.
That was the first record Wash-
ington broke Sunday. And after
they broke it, the announcers
forgot that Wonder Elway was
even on the field.
Of course, Elway didn't do
much after the first quarter to let
the announcers know he was
alive. He made interesting faces
as pass after pass went awry, but
that was, about it.
Poor John. He had no idea that
the chips were stacked against
him from the very beginning.
He didn't know that, somewhere,
thousands of miles away,-some-
little
way,-somelittle guy had predicted a Denver
wip by two touchdowns and a
field goal.
He didn't know that I had put
the curse on them.
Area extravaganza
This weekend Exeter and Hen-
sall are going to be hosting a•
kind of sporting extravaganza of
their own. The best part about it
is that you can watch three full
days of some of the top Ringette
action in Qntario and not be sub-
jected to a single Diet Pepsi
commercial.
The Western Regional Provin-
cial B Ringette Preliminaries
will be held Friday, Saturday and
Sunday at the South Huron Rec
Centre and the Hensall Arena.
Teams from Stratford, Guelph,
London, Kitchener, Waterloo and
Woolwich will be -sending B
teams in Petite, Twecn, Junior,
Bell and Deb divisions to battle
it out on our ice.
'The champions from each divi-
sion will advance to the Provin-
cial Championships in Sudbury,
April 1.
Exeter and Hensall became
home for this years tournament
after the Stratford Ringette asso-
ciation discovered that they
couldn't get enough ice time in
the Stratford arca.
While there are no area teams
participating in the tourney, lo-
cal player Julia Merrier is a
member of the Stratford Juniors.
Juniors arc coming into the fi-
nals,
inals, fresh from a silver medal
performance at a recent St. Cath-
arines tournament.

Hcnsall at 7:30 and runs until
11:30 p.m. Games will resume
Saturday morning on both ice

Crunchers tie Forest, ilderto.n
An outstanding defensive effort

After a scoreless first period, the
two teams matched goals in the sec-
ond, Mike Burton scored for
Crunchers after he connected with

but Geoff Hann- connected . with

came up against Ilderton A's and
fought to a 1-1 tic.
Broncos bumped by Kincardine in championship final
Exeter Broncos, defending cham-
pions at the Lucan Leprachaun
Atom tournament held on the week-
end, were squeezed out of a repeat
performance when they lost a 1-0
decision to Kincardine Sunday even-
ing.
The two teams fought through' a
scoreless first period and far into the
second before Zack Smith of Kin-
cardine scored what was to be the
winning goal.
Exeter continued to hound their
opponents into the third, missing
several scoring chances by shooting
just wide of the net. ,
Sean McCann signed Exeter's
ticket into the C division semi -
Again, neither tcam was able to
score in the first period. Ilderton
took a 1-0 lead in the second when
Jeff Rau put the puck in the net on
a pass from Jeff Schlegel.
It looked as though Ilderton would
leave the arena with a win as the
game wound down in the third peri-
od, but as the final seconds tickcd
off the clock, Scott Inson scored
from Colter to tie the game.
Crunchers goalie Michael
Schwindt turned in a fine perfor-
mance while thc Exeter defence

time in two days.
Partridge, Jongkind, Sims, Jason
Keller and Hann kept the Ilderton
goalie busy throughout the game.
Muir builds six point night for Irish
Figuring on all six goals in Lu -
can's 6=1win over Brussels Bulls
Saturday•night, Brad Muir lcd the
Irish with two goals and four as-
sists.
The two teams fought through a
scoreless first period Saturday in
Lucan, but Irish took control early
in the second.
Scott Denomy started the scoring
after he picked up a pass from tan
Craig and Muir and put the puck in
the net at 6:23.
Craig was next in line. He scored
during a power play at 17:17, from
Glen Marshall and Muir.
With 1:17 rcmaining in the sec-
ond, Muir sunk his first puck of the
night. Dcnomy drew the lone as-
sist.
Lucan crawled all over Brussels in
the first minute of the third, scoring
twice and obliterating any chances
finals Friday night when he turned
in a four point game with two goals
and two assists. Exeter dumped
Woodstock 9-0.
Darren Kints was between the
pipes for the shut out.
Broncos captain Ian Jean put on a
good show: as well, scoring once
and picking up two assists.
Ted I joffman potted two goals in
the effort while Chris McDonald,
"eve Sure, Trevor Taylor and Mar-
ty DeBruyn each -scored singles.
Conditions got tougher in Bron-
cos' second game of the tourney
when they met Port Stanley. and
narrowly escaped with a 3-2 win in
overtime to qualify for the champi-
onship game.
Again McCann was a big produc-
er for Exeter with three goals.
McCann gave Broncos a 1-0 lead
in the . first, but Port Stanley
emerged from the second period
leading 2-1.
McCann scored the only goat of
the third to send the two teams into
overtime and then just 1:0.2 into the
extra period, he connected with Tay- -
tor to score the winning goal. .
Back to Playdowns
Broncos now resume round robin
playdown action in Lambeth Wed-
nesday (7 p.m.), Ridgctown Friday
(6:30 p.m.) and Forest: Sunday
(4:30 p.m.).
ATOM RUSH -- A Lucan Atom makes -an impressive drive toward the Ilderton goal, shooting as he closes in, but
Ilderton's net minder is sharp. Teams from all over Southern Ontario participated in the Lucan Leprachaur tourna-
ment on the weekend.
RSD Panthers -
win, lose
RSD Panthers and Exeter Opti-
mist Bombers turned up the heat in
Novice House League January 19
when Panthers defeated Bombers 1-
0 in a game which was scoreless
until the third period.
Despite the fact that neither team
was able to score, the first two per-
iods of hockey were fast and furi-
ous, featuring end-to-end play.
With only 22 seconds remaining
in the game, Ryan Fritter picked
up a pass from Brian Hayman and
shot it past Bombcrs goalie Joey
Beirling to win the game. That
goal gave Panthers their second
win of the season.
Luke Sims claimed the shutout
for RSD. Both he and Beirling
were outstanding in net for their re-
spective teams.
Panthers found themselves in a
•similar situation January 23 when
. they played Lucan A's through al-
most three periods of scoreiess
hockey.
This time, however, RSD were
on the low side of the score.
Just 49 seconds were showing on
the clock when- Lucan's Corey
Smith picked up a clearing pass,
skated in and shot. Todd Golding,
standing at the side of the net unno-
of a Bulls comeback.
Muir waited just 33 seconds be-
fore he took advantage of a power
play to score. This time Paul
Barnes assisted on the play.
Barnes waitcd a Mere 23 seconds
before following suit, scoring Lu -
can's fifth goal of the night. Muir
drew an assist along with Joe Fe-
brcy.
Brussels notched their only goal
of the game at 16:18 when Mike
Chapman scored while Bulls had a
man advantage.
At 17:40, Febrey scored a short-
handed goal from Muir and Barnes,
ending a banner night for the Irish.
With six games rcmaining in the
Western Junior D regular schedule,

INDUSTRIAL HORIZON FUND:
5500 MILLION STRONG. AND
POSITIONED FOR TOMORROW.
Industrial Horizon Fund was launched just a year ago.
its.public offering was the largest in Canadian mutual fund
history. Today, the fund's assets are nearly 8500 million. And
sales are strong.
- Prior to the October 19, 1987 decline, more than 70",, of the
portfolio was in cash, government securities and other liquid
assets.
That was 'good fur the people who bought an Industrial
Horizon Fund RRSP last year, because they were well protected
against the market decline.
But it's also gond for this year's RRSP investors. Because
over the past few months, the managers at Mackenzie Financial
have been able to purchase quality investments at what they
believe are. excellent prices.
In fact. Mackenzie believes industrial Horizon Fund is in an
ideal position to capitalize on an upswing for the right stocks
over the next few years.
To put it another way, with no acquisition fee, you can invest
in a mutual fund RRSP that's nearly 8500 million strong.
And positioned far yourtoniorrow.
