b.% Alai.]: Bisset
January hockey should melt the ice
From my vantage point in the
bleachers, it looks as if there's a
lot of hockey coming our way in
January.
There's the World Junior ice
hockey tournament which seems
to be demanding attention this
year the way the six o'clock
news does after a terrible down-
hill skiing accident.
And even though they, know
they shouldn't, Toronto fans are
watching the NHL's' very own
blue mould grow all over Maple
Leaf Gardens.
Here at home . we've got the
Exeter Mohawks and the Junior
Hawks steaming through their
respective divisions in a fashion
that calls to mind that horrific
helicopter scene in Apocalypse
Now where -the flying machines
sweep down on innocent villag-
ers, blaring the Valkyrie from
loud speakers and spewing na-
palm.
Exeter Hawks are going to be
setting the ice on fire in a coupte
of special events over the next
two weeks. January 2, Hawks
will be facing off against Lucan
Irish during Lucan Minor Hock-
ey night.
The fcilowing weekend (Jan.
8,9,10) comes the big Junior D
event of the season =, the 1 lth
annual Hawks tournament. Actu-
ally, to call it the big Junior D
event of the -season is mislead-
ing. Hawks had trouble attract-
ing the interest of many of their
Junior D counter -parts this sea-
son (likely due to the singed _
feeling they get every time they
play ExetFr) so they have turned
the tourney into a combined Jun-
ior 0.- Junior D event.
Lucan, Tavistock and Exeter
will make up the .D part of the
tourney while C teams from
Grand Valley, Port Elgin and
Caledon provide the balance.
The six teams will split up
into their individual divisions
and play a round robin series to
decide a C ,and D winner. The
first place finishers in each divi-
sion will meet in a grand cham-
pionship while the second place
finishers will play a consolation
-final.
The consolation final will be-
gin Sunday at 5 p.m. with the
grand championship final to fol-
low at 7:30 p.m.
All games will be played at
the South Huron Rcc Centre.
Hardy. Cup notes
The four Ontario finalists have
been established in the bid for
the Hardy Cup this season. Ex-
eter Mohawks have, of course,
clinched the Central Senior B di-
vision. In the North, the North-
ern Senior B representative will
be Shelbourne Muskies while
the Southern Senior A league
will be represented by Tillson-
burg Maroons.
The Seaway Senior B league
will have Mooretown Comets as
its representative,
A detailed schedule is expected
to be released next week.
• Holiday Hoopla
I have a pair of nephews on
the west coast who have what
could .be described as a warped
sense of humour. For Christmas
this/year they sent me a little`
brass basketball hoop complete
with back -board and net, which
is meant to attach to a waste-
paper basket.
To tell you the truth, I'm not
sure how to take it.
They have been known to
laugh at me because I continue
to believe in the Toronto Maple
Leafs the way Linus believes in ,
the Great Pumpkin. One year for
Christmas, they sent me and my
parents matching paper bags
with blue maple leafs on them.
They had eye holes cut out so
that we could wear them on our
heads.
Funny.
The basketball gear suspi-
ciously calls to mind the heart-
rending suspension of Borje
Salming and a couple of cronies
who let a little hoop -shooting
get out of hand in a hotel room
earlier this year.
But there may be another ele-
ment to this.
After I put the hoop up over
my waste -paper basket, I balled
up a couple of pieces of paper
on my desk and shot a few.
That's when it hit me -- might
they be trying to re -direct some
of the stuff that comes out of
my typewriter?

ing performance in net for Legion-
naires.

ple. Schwindt followed with Exet-
er's third goal with 7:10 remaining
in the second. Hem and Tinney drew
the assists on Schwindt's goal.
Trailing 4-3 in the third, Tinney
became the hero of the game, scor-
ing the tying goal unassisted with
just 1:51 left to play. That goal
sent the two teams into overtime,
but Mount Brydges emerged the vic-
tor.

feet with an 11-3 win over Drumbo,

example with a goal two minutes
later. Good drew the only assist.
Sixteen seconds after Mason sunk
the puck into the net, Bedard repeat-

Bullets-Hensall battle
turns into scoring frenzy
two teams continued to pummel
each other's n-ets, Dennis Mount an-
swered McBride's goal with his sec-
ond of the game and then Beckett
made up the difference- 15 seconds
later with his third goal.
Dalrymple 'and Stephens each
scored .for Hensall to increase the
widening gap.
Beckett put another puck in .the
net with 4:02 remaining in the sec-
ond from Greg Agnew, but Hensall
was not finished -with them.
Dalrymple scored from Gardner
and Dennis Mount with 3:15 left in
.the middle stanza*
Dalrymple and Gould sparked the
scoring in thethird but Beckett and
Parsons quickly. matched ' those
markers with goals of their own
with assists going to Jamie RQJph
and Jason Wein.
Two more goals by Stephens and
singles by Kevin Mount and Gard-
ner scaled Exeter's fate, but with -
one minute remaining, Agnew
dumped in a shot from Beckett to
score.
The final score of the game was
15-8.
Five goals by Exeter's Derek
Beckett weren't enough to give Ex-
eter Big V"Bullcts a win over Hen-
sall -- they were matched by five

the action at 3:54 when he put the -
puck in the net from the stick of
Campbell. Dalrymple followed with
