The win secures Mohawks first place berth in the Central Senior B league. A tie for first is the worst Mohawks can expect. A loss or a tie for Durham, combined with a lie or better for Exeter, will leave Mo- hawks aldne in the top spot. Exeter bounded out into a 5-0 lead WAXING STRATHROY - A pair of Exeter Novice Waxers give the Strathroy goalie and defencemen a run for their money'Monday night at the South Huron Rec Centre. Waxers won the re -scheduled game 2-0. Novice Waxers shut out Shathro Exeter Novice Waxers handled Strathroy in an easy fashion Mon- day night at the South Huron Rec Centre when they defeated the visit- ing team 2-0. After a scoreless first period, Ex- eter began to apply pressure. Ryan Beckett scored an unassisted goal just two minutes into the middle period. in y Exeter just over a minute showing on the clock, Strathroy pulled their goalie in hopes of making a dent in their goose -egg. Exeter rattled two shots off the post of the empty net • Chad Gilfillan made it 2-0 after he scored on a pass from Eric Clay with 3:44 Left in the second. Exeter had one goal disallowed in the final frame of the game. With in the first period on the strength of ten shots on goal. Randy Bailey scratched the surface with a marker just 1:29 into the. game. Barry Baynham picked up the assist on the play. Two minutes later Jeff Warren put the puck in the net from Quincy Wilker. Wilker took advantage of a power play situation eleven minutes later to score, connecting with -Warren and Al Gates and then Gates scored Tess than one minute later while Durham was still one man short. With 1:06 left in the first, Wilker scored his second of the afternoon from Brian Mercer and Dave Rander- son. In the second period, Randerson put the puck in' the net from the stick of Warren and Bailey after six minutes of play. Jeff Shipley added to the score with a goal at 7:40. John Rowland and Mercer drew the assists. With 7:07 remaining in the game Bill Glover put the puck in the net from Bailey and Mike Zorctich. Mich Landry put Durham on the board with a goal late in the second. Huskies' Bruce Marshall gave Durham their Second goal of the night with 5:18 remaining in the third, but even that was countered with an unassisted goal by Bailey, his second of the game. Mohawks out -shot Durham 36- 25. Rick Pikul was in goal for Ex- eter. - Exeter next sees action when they face Palmerston Sunday January 3 at 2:15 p.m. Irish match Lamb Lucan Irish scored a single goal in • the third period last Wednesday night to push Lambeth out of the lead and tic the game 4-4 in an ex- tremely close Western Junior D rt�atch-up. In a relatively penalty -fret game, the two teams battled through a 1-1 first pSriod tic. Lambeth emerged 'Cith a 4-3 lead after the second, but Lucan was able to even things up before the final buzzer went in the third. Tim Hayter put Lucan into the lead in -the first with a well placed shot at 7:42. Assists on the play went to Ian Craig and Dean Doerr. Lambeth tied the game at 1-1 late in the period after Jack Dundas found the mark. Kquick Lambeth goal at 1:19 of Exeter Hawks rivalry with Brussels heats up Brussels took it on the chin Sun- day aftcmoon in the latest scuffle be- tween Exeter Hawks and their Junior D counterparts. Hawks hanged Bulls a 5-3 loss in a rough-and-tumble game which lasted two hours and 35 minutes, but it was a costly win. Jeff Ansems received a two game suspension while Steve Gould was thrown out for an unspecified num- ber of games after a high -sticking incident with Brussels goaltender Jeff McGavin. Jeff Dalrymple (who has since been picked up by St. Marys Lincolns) received a game misconduct as did Jim Lewis, Dean Schram and Tom McCann. Hawks went into the game with 'Dan Brintnell and Steve Prout at the f - 1 helm after head coach Dave Bogart received a three game suspension for the verbal abuse of an official in Ex - eters last meeting with Seaforth. Brintnell said Monday that Hawks have risen to the occasion. "Our last three games have proba- bly shown more character than the last 20 games before that," Hawks manager said. "We've had some big hills to climb." Brintnell noted that under the new playoff format, brought about after Clinton Mustangs folded, Hawks will choose Brussels as their first round competitors. The manager said Hawks hoped to get their toughest competition out of the way right off the bat. The revised playoff format allows - the first place team to pick their opposition. Penalties play big role Every goal Sunday (with the ex- ception of a short-handed effort by or s Hawks) was scored during a power play. Officials handed out a total of 46 minor penalties and 36 majors to the two teams over the course of the game. Brussels jumped into a 1-0 lead late in the first period on a power play goal by Kevin Lee. It wasn't until 6:26 of the second that Exeter matched that goal with one of their own. George Pratt put the puck in the net during a power play from Gould and Pfaff. Brussels re -took the lead four minutes later when Tim Fritz capi- talized on a power play situation. A goal by Terry Casey evened the score again at 12:57 from Jeff An- sems and then a short-handed goal by Scott Lovic put Exeter in the lead with 3:23 remaining in the second. Clark Singer picked up an assist on the play. Broncos trounce Strathroy, lose to Ilderton Led by the scoring efforts of Scan McCann with four goals and Trevor Trcumncr with two, Exctcr Atom' Broncos romped over Strathroy 7-1 Sunday (Dec. 20). McCann's and Treumncr's perfor- mances were backed up by an excel- lent goaltending effort by Jason Clay. Glenn Hines was credited with a strong back -checking effort. Hard skating and precise passing Lose to Strathroy Crunchers run out of time proved to be the winning tactor against Strathroy. Broncos opened the scoring at 6:36 of the first when McCann scored after picking up a pass from Steve Stires. Strathroy matched McCann's goal at 7:31 but Ted Hoffman put Exeter out in front again with a goal at 8:18. Trevor Taylor.drew the lone assist on the play. The two teams played through a Exctcr Crunchcrs were defeated 6- 4 in Atom house league action at Strathroy. Three Strathroy goals went unan- swered until the 1:44 mark of the second period when Rob Wagner scored an unassisted goal. Strathroy responded with their fourth goal at ethe end of the second period. Geoff Hann scored for Exctcr early in the third period assisted by Jason Keller and dike Burton. Strathroy then scored two quick goals to make the tally 6-2. , Exeter persisted with their cfforts and scored two unassisted goals, wiz by Willy Partridge, the other came off the stick of Scott Inson. Exctcr then ran out of time and left the fi- nal score at 6-4. Hawks lose Dalrymple Exctcr Hawks defenccman Jeff Dalrymple has been picked up by St. Marys Junior B Lincolns. Hawks manager Dan Brintnell Jeff Dalrymple said Monday that Dalrymple's absence shouldn't affect the team in the long run. "We're going to miss him but we've got a lot of depth," Brint- nell said. "We'll be alright. He was probably our best defence - man at moving people away from the net." The 17 -year old player played his final game with Hawks Sun- day wi;thc Junior D team met Brussels. Dalrymple would have played one more game but a sus- pension received after the Brus- sels bout will leave him out -of. the action until he heads to St. Marys. •A grade 12 student at South Huron District High School, Dalrympleisinhis second year with Exctcr Hawks. Last season, after playing on the league all- star team, Dalrymple was drafted by Guelph Platers. Hawks arc currently looking at a number of prospects to fill Dalrymple's position. scoreless second period but in the third, Exeter pulled away from their opponents with five unanswered goals. Chris MacDonald, Ian Jean, McCann, Taylor and Stires each drew single assists on the third period goals. Broncos let penalties defeat them whcn they came up against Ilderton December 17 and lost 6-1. Exeter played well throughout the first two periods, coming up • against a hot Ilderton goalie. Bron- cos trailed 2-0 heading into the third. A series of penalties in the last stanza however, nullified any chance they had of making a come- back. While Exctcr worked away with two players in the penalty box with a major and a minor infraction, Il- derton added two goals to their lead. Another goal, scored while Exeter wa gain short-handed, put the g, a out of Broncos reach. With 55 seconds remaining in the game, Glenn Hines scored from Matt Godbolt to save Exctcr from being shut out. Panthers lose by two points .The Parkhill Novice Panthers were edged out of the final round in the 9th annual novice regional Sil- ver Stick tournament by two points. The team ended up v ith a total of 23 points, two wins and a tie game. Because of the tie with Bel- mont, they gained two points. Parkhill downed Watford with a 5-1 score, and London Novice with a 6- 0 shut -out. Tristan Hatfield and Simon Desjardine scored two goals in each win, with singles added by Kyle Vcrmeulen, Casey Wall, and Jay Truemner. Claybird gun club ends season The Claybird Gun Club has ended it's shooting season with the pres- entation of trophies for season long high average trapshooting. Trophy winners, out of possible 1000 targets: first Jody Mosurin- john (930), second Dwight Monck (870), and third Rusty Gibson (860). All proceeds from fund raising events will be used to purchase a new clay target thrower through the Ontario Lottery Corporation's Sport Program. The club is a non-profit organiza- lion interested in the conservation of wildlife and forestry and safe gun handling in national and internation- al competitive sport shooting. • Molting Hawks win, lose Exeter Molting Hawks downed Lambeth Canadians Old Timers 8- 6. Leading the way for Exctcr was Bob McDonald with a hat trick fol- lowed by Scott Burton with two goals, Keith Ahrens, Bob Jones and Ron Moore with one each. Leading in the assists department were Jim Empringham (3), Ron Moore (3), Eli Pfaff (3) and Phil Tamer (2). Sarnia OId,Oilcrs visited Molting Hawks Monday dclivcrin an 8-2 loss to Exeter. Bob Condon put Lambeth ahead with a goal and then at 12:27 Jeremic Brooks added another to the Lambeth lead. Irish trailed by two goals until 13:05 when Glen Marshall scored to tic the game at 2-2. Scott Denomy and Jamie Greig assisted Marshall in the effort. At 15:44 Brad Muir tied the game for Lucan with a shot from Paul Barnes and Jesse Crawford. A penalty proved to be Lucan's second period undoing, however. At 17:18, Lambeth's Brooks scored while Irish were short-handed.
