Exeter Mohawks' hopes of finding
a worthy opponent before the Sen-
ior•B playoffs begin dwindled Sun-
day afternoon when they came up
against an apparently improved Dur-
ham Huskies squad and squashed
them 9-2.
The win secures Mohawks first
place berth in the Central Senior B
league. A tie for first is the worst
Mohawks can expect. A loss or a
tie for Durham, combined with a lie
or better for Exeter, will leave Mo-
hawks aldne in the top spot.

Lucan was able to even things up
before the final buzzer went in the

Exeter Hawks rivalry with Brussels heats up
Brussels took it on the chin Sun-
day aftcmoon in the latest scuffle be-
tween Exeter Hawks and their Junior
D counterparts. Hawks hanged Bulls
a 5-3 loss in a rough-and-tumble
game which lasted two hours and 35
minutes, but it was a costly win.
Jeff Ansems received a two game
suspension while Steve Gould was
thrown out for an unspecified num-
ber of games after a high -sticking
incident with Brussels goaltender
Jeff McGavin. Jeff Dalrymple (who
has since been picked up by St.
Marys Lincolns) received a game
misconduct as did Jim Lewis, Dean
Schram and Tom McCann.
Hawks went into the game with
'Dan Brintnell and Steve Prout at the
f - 1
helm after head coach Dave Bogart
received a three game suspension for
the verbal abuse of an official in Ex -
eters last meeting with Seaforth.
Brintnell said Monday that Hawks
have risen to the occasion.
"Our last three games have proba-
bly shown more character than the
last 20 games before that," Hawks
manager said. "We've had some big
hills to climb."
Brintnell noted that under the new
playoff format, brought about after
Clinton Mustangs folded, Hawks
will choose Brussels as their first
round competitors. The manager
said Hawks hoped to get their
toughest competition out of the
way right off the bat.
The revised playoff format allows -
the first place team to pick their
opposition.
Penalties play big role
Every goal Sunday (with the ex-
ception of a short-handed effort by
or s
Hawks) was scored during a power
play. Officials handed out a total of
46 minor penalties and 36 majors
to the two teams over the course of
the game.
Brussels jumped into a 1-0 lead
late in the first period on a power
play goal by Kevin Lee.
It wasn't until 6:26 of the second
that Exeter matched that goal with
one of their own. George Pratt put
the puck in the net during a power
play from Gould and Pfaff.
Brussels re -took the lead four
minutes later when Tim Fritz capi-
talized on a power play situation.
A goal by Terry Casey evened the
score again at 12:57 from Jeff An-
sems and then a short-handed goal
by Scott Lovic put Exeter in the
lead with 3:23 remaining in the
second. Clark Singer picked up an
assist on the play.

proved to be the winning tactor
against Strathroy. Broncos opened
the scoring at 6:36 of the first when
McCann scored after picking up a
pass from Steve Stires.
Strathroy matched McCann's goal
at 7:31 but Ted Hoffman put Exeter
out in front again with a goal at

second period when Rob Wagner

ethe end of the second period.
Geoff Hann scored for Exctcr early

nal score at 6-4.
Hawks lose Dalrymple
Exctcr Hawks defenccman Jeff
Dalrymple has been picked up
by St. Marys Junior B Lincolns.
Hawks manager Dan Brintnell
Jeff Dalrymple
said Monday that Dalrymple's
absence shouldn't affect the team
in the long run.
"We're going to miss him but
we've got a lot of depth," Brint-
nell said. "We'll be alright. He
was probably our best defence -
man at moving people away
from the net."
The 17 -year old player played
his final game with Hawks Sun-
day wi;thc Junior D team met
Brussels. Dalrymple would have
played one more game but a sus-
pension received after the Brus-
sels bout will leave him out -of.

third, Exeter pulled away from their
opponents with five unanswered
goals.
McCann scored three in a row be-
tween 7:17 and 9:33 and then
Trcumner added two goals at 14:11
and 14:51 to finish the game. Chris
MacDonald, Ian Jean, McCann,
Taylor and Stires each drew single
assists on the third period goals.
Broncos let penalties defeat them
whcn they came up against Ilderton
December 17 and lost 6-1.
Exeter played well throughout the
first two periods, coming up •
against a hot Ilderton goalie. Bron-
cos trailed 2-0 heading into the
third.
A series of penalties in the last
stanza however, nullified any
chance they had of making a come-
back.
While Exctcr worked away with
two players in the penalty box with
a major and a minor infraction, Il-
derton added two goals to their lead.
Another goal, scored while Exeter
wa gain short-handed, put the
g, a out of Broncos reach.
With 55 seconds remaining in the
game, Glenn Hines scored from
Matt Godbolt to save Exctcr from
being shut out.
