Christmas a time for visitina at Thames Road
By MRS. WILLIAM ROHDE
The Christmas Eve church service
was well attended on Thursday even-
ing. The service commenced with
the processional hymn with the
cllteir members carrying candles and
singing "Once In Royal David's
City"►"
There were ninedifferent readers
reading scripture passages namely,
Shirley Kerslake, Marjorie Johns,
Bruce Delbridge, Floyd Cooper,
Ann Kernick, Barry Cunnington,
Marilyn Vandenbussche, Robert
Bray and Larry Dawson.
The choir sang two numbers,
"Sleep, Child Divine" and
"Westminster Carol" accompanied
by organist Agnes Bray. Ryan.Park-
er ht the five advent candles. Doro-
thy_ Duncan and Fred Delbridge re-
ceived the offering. Quite a number
of Christmas carols were sung, and
a lot of candles were lit.
Dorothy Duncan, Audrey Pass-
more and Elson Lynn gathered at
the front of the church to serve
communion. Rev. K. Teddy Smits
read while the people came forward
directed by John Batten. The reces-
sional hymn • :'O Come All Ye
Faithful" led by the choir brought a
very impressive evening to a close.
Church service
Rev. K. Teddy Smits was in
charge of the Sunday morning
church service. The choir sang An-
other Year is Dawning accompanied
by organist Miss Agnes Bray.
In thc children's story Rev. Smits
told the children about a visit to a
big old castle with many rooms2A
guide showed the visitors inside one
room. Aftcr they had seen all that
was in the room, the guide took
them outside and locked the door;
nobody could go in anymore.
Life is like a building with many
rooms. Each year is a room. Once
we have left the year we can never
go back in. We have done some
things right, we made mistakes, we
lost opportunities. A new year is
like going into a new room. We can
make it a good year, with God on
our side.
In his sermon Rev. Smits took as
his text Genesis 47:8 "How many
years have you lived?" It was the
question put by the Egyptian King
to Jacob, the last of the three patri-
archs, upon his arrival in Egypt. Ja-
cob emigrated there after his son had
done so well in the country, which
he first entered as a slave.
We all grow a year older when the
old year disappears and a new year
begins. How old will we gei to be?
Some measure years by their mate-
rial'success. But do wejudge a year
only by its profits and losses? Will
one day our life be judged by the
amounts we made in business?
Or should a life be judged by its
length? We are merely tenants in
our bodies, and some of the shortest
lives have left the strongest impres-
sions. There are composers such as
Mozart who lived a short Life and
left a wealth of music.
There is the life on one, 33 years
of age who changed the lives of un-
told people. His name is Jesus.

At the start of a Ncw Year, many
of us reflect on our lives and how
we could change them for the better.
When your thoughts turn to plans
for a healthier, safer 1988, I hope
you'll consider adopting these Ncw
Year's Resolutions for Better
!With!
Don't smoke
If you don't smoke now, don't
start! If you (10 smoke, make this
the year that you kick the habit. It
pays to quit, for your health and
your pocketbook, even if you've
smoked for years. Cigarette smok-
ing is the leading cause of preventa-
ble death in Canada. By choosing
not to smoke, you protect yourself
from a significantly increased risk
of lung cancer, one of the least
treatable forms of cancer! You also
decrease your risk of developing
heart disease, bronchitis, or emphy-
sema. Not to mention the favour
you do for your children and others
exposed to your second-hand smoke!
Eat sensibly
What you cat is important to your
health! A well-balanced, nutritious
dict doesn't eliminate or overempha-
size any one group of foods. 1t
should include many different food
choices in moderate amounts from
each of the four food groups! Sensi-

weight, stick to a gradual diet and
exercise program that teaches you
new and healthier eating habits. For
information about sensible weight
loss programs, ask your local dieti-

Exercise regularly
Regular exercise docs matter in
terms of your overall health.
Choose activities that you enjoy do-
ing 'and participate at least three or
four times weekly for a minimum
of 0 minutes each time. Begin
your exercise program slowly and
gradually increase your intensity as
you become more fit.
Learn effective stress man-
agement techniques
Stress is a normal part of living.
It's the spark that let's us do and be
our best! However, unhealthy re-
sponses to too much stress ... like
driving too fast, drinking too much,
excess use of mood altering drugs,
or prolonged anger and frustration
... can cause health problems. Even
on busy days, find time to slow
down and relax. For more informa-
tion on stress, phone the Health
Unit at 524-8301.
