UP 60 -YEARS IN
FURNITURE BUSINESS
After 60 years of selling quality home furnishings to Exeter and area residents Hopper
Hockey Furniture Limited has announced their business will close with the liquidation of
their present inventory and additional furniture orders they are committed to•receiving.
The partnership of Irvine Armstrong, Robert Fletcher and Gordon Ross will end on April
30, 1988.
It was in 1928 that E. Russell Hopper came to Exeter from Wingham and started the furni-
ture store and funeral home in Exeter.
In 1936 Kenneth Hockey served his apprenticeship with E.R. Hopper and received his fu-
neral director's licence and in 1944 Irvine Armstrong served his apprenticeship with E.R.
Hopper receiving his licence in 1947.
The name changed in 1946 to Hopper Hockey Furniture and Funeral Home when Ken
Hockey bought into the business.
Robert Fletcher came to Exeter from the A. Millard George Funeral Home in London
and in 1960 Arrnstrong and Fletcher purchased Ken Hockey's shares. Three years later
they took over full ownership of the Furniture Store and Funeral Home.
As the business grew Iry and Bob were joined by a third partner, Gordon Ross in 1973. At
that time thA partners formed two companies, Hopper Hockey Ltd. Funeral Home and
Hopper Hockey Furniture Ltd. which have been operating for the past 15 years.
