The children's story dealt with the Christmas Rosc. -Thousands of years ago, a vote was taken among the plants asking when thcy would bloom. Many flowers chose early or late summer. No one chose Decem- ber, except for a tiny plant which rcccivcd the name "The Christmas Rose". Whcn the shepherds looked for something to bring to the child Je- sus, they could not find any flow- ers. But one shepherd found the Christmas Rose. Mary was so pleased to receive this flower in the winter season. Rev. Smits' sermon had as text St. John 20:27 "Put your finger here, see my hands". Whcn we see and feel the hands of a person, we can learn a lot. A hard- working mechanic soon has marks on his hands of the heavy work. A surgeon has most delicate clev- er hands. A pianist and violinist. have longer fingers, much used on keys and strings. Jesus had little tiny fingers as a child. But as he was an adult, those hands had to do the work of a car- -penter. Once in His ministry, His hands were instruments of healing, instru- ments of blessing. Soldiers drove heavy, huge nails through His hands whcn He was be- ing crucified. After He had appeared to the disci- ples he came back once more and said to Thomas "See my hands." The marks in His hands were there to remind Thomas that he too had contributed to those nail marks. But also, the hands are symbols of the greatest love this world has ever seen.
