Seniors celebrate Christmas
Exeter Seniors held their Christ-
mas annual meeting and dinner at
the Exeter Legion Hall. Everyone
enjoyed the delicious meal served by
the Legion ladies.
Guest speaker was George Robert-
son, a local policeman, who spoke
on Crimeproofing, making our
homes burglar-proof and not giving
criminals a chance to strike. A short
film showed how to remove the
temptations and how to crime -proof
our lives by being careful, alert, -
cautious and aware. It was. timely
advice as we easily become careless.
President Pat Skinncr opened the
meeting and read an excerpt from
Peter . Marshall's. -"Let's Keep

An invitation to attend the Grand
Opening of the new office of thc
Huron County Home Carc at 80
Mary St., Clinton, Wednesday De-
cember 16 from 2-4 p.m. was read
by secretary Laura Dickie. Member-
ship dues were paid to treasurer,
Mary Neil.
A donation was given to buy a
brick for the Legion renovation, and
further donations were made to the
Legion for the use of the Hall, to
the Legion ladies for catering and to
the caretaker for extra,scrviccs.
Garnet Hicks gave the Huronvicw
report. A discussion followed. The
majority wished to be able to obtain
Varna Pageant

Sunday December 13 was Advent
III and Joan Beicrling lit the third
candle. December 20, is Christmas
Sunday and Communion. There will
be a Candlelight service for Vama-
Goshen on Sunday night in Varna at
8 p.m. There will also be a birthday
cake for Jesus. Please bring your
candles wrapped in foil.
The Varna Sunday School Concert
was held Sunday following the
Church service. Lunch was enjoyed
by all and Sunday School Superin-
tendent Joe Laurie was in charge of
conducting the program.
David Rathwell welcomed every-
one with a reading. Sandra Coultis
then read a Christmas poem.
The senior class favoured everyone
with a skit. Kim Taylor and Heather
Laurie both played numbers on the
piano.
A Christmas Pageant was then
portrayed by the whole Sunday
GRADUATES - Dinette Steffens,
R.N., daughter of Herman •and
Joanne Steffens, RR 1 Lucan, grad-
uated on July 10, 1987 from Fan-
shawe College with a diploma in
nursing. She is presently employed
at Victoria Hospital in London.
School involving the audience with
Carol singing. Raymond Beierling
then recited a story on Santa's Tur-
nip. The kindergartcn class sang a
song entitled "God Made Snow-
flakes".
Bill and Joyce Dowson's three year
old grandson, Michael Groot, recited
a verse "When I was a Little Boy".
Then Grandma Joyce sang "Away in
the Manger" and Michael did the ac-
tions.
Darcy and Danny Rathwell and
Cara Stephenson recited some
Christmas verses. Michael Stephen-
son entertained evcryonc with his
spoons while his little sisters danced
and everyone joined in with clapping
in tune to the spoons along with the
music.
The Coultis family sang "Santa
Claus is Coming to Town". The
Laurie family entertained everyone
with a presentation for the Little
Pine Trcc, which must have taken
some time preparing. Mary Ellen
Webster played the piano and Santa
Coultis played the ukulele.
Mark Webster ended with a read-
ing. The children then sang "Jingle
Bells,' and "Here Comes Santa" and
the "Jolly Old Fellow" arrived to
give out presents and treats.
Many thanks to the Christian Edu-
cation Committee, Joe Laurie, the
Sunday School teachers, parents and
also to Shirley Hill for playing the
piano. These people helped to make
the concert a success and an enjoya-
ble program.
Youth Group meet in Varna
Thursday December 17 at 7:30 p.m.
On Tuesday December 22 they also
meet for some snow fun and a so-
cial time to follow.
Celebration '88 medals
The Stanley Township is taking
part in the Celebration '88 medals
award. The awards arc to be given
out at the family night in February.
There are to be six awards, for a
male and female athlete, a sponsor,
a coach, an official and a volunteer.
The nominations for any award
can be phoned in to Lowell Mount
at 233-5876 or Jim Kirton at 233-
7103 by January 30. Nomination
forms will be available at Stanley
Township businesses.
Pete Rowntree is now living in
thc little yellow house that Bonnie
Barraclough was living in. Wel-
come to the village, Pete.

Bingo at the Villa will be looked
after by E. Chalmers, D. Bullock,
Chas and Vi Hendy and Len and M.
McKnight.
Christmas readings, poems and
jokes were presented by Mary Neil,
Edna Caldwell and Pat Skinner. Pat
led a sing song of Christmas carols.
D. Bullock was pianist. •
Next year's meetings will all be
held Tuesday evenings.
Members arc .reminded to bring
gifts suitable for bingo prizes to the
January 5 meeting. Cards will begin
at 6:30 p.rn., business to follow.
New members arc always wel-
come.

Christmas at
IOOF Lodge
Last Tuesday night Exeter IOOF
No. 67 held their annual Christmas
party. A large crowd gathered for a
sumptuous meal of roast turkey
with all the trimmings. Following
the business a splendid program or-
ganized by Brothers Ken Ogden and
Ray Cann was enjoyed.
Brother Delmer Skinncr gave
some of his old favorite readings
and Rena Young, piano, Jim Young
on guitar, Ivan Norris on banjo and
Ray Cann on violin provided some
toc-tapping music.
Many words of appreciation were
extended to both committees for an
evening of Good Fellowship.
Wednesday evening theHurnani-
tarian Service committee held an-
other monthly euchre party. A. good
crowd was present and the following
winners declared Ladies' High Eileen
Pullman, Ladies.' Low Lydia Regicr,
Ladies' Lone Hands Iva Blair, Gents
High Garnet Hicks, Gents Low La-
verne Stone, Gents- Lone hands
Clive Pullman. Winners of the
dutch auction were Janet Hicks and
Iva Blair.
Lunch was served and plans were
made for the next euclire.party of
January 13, 1988 at 8 p.m. Every-
one is welcome.
GRADUATES - Judy Van Oss,
daughter of John and Garda Van
Oss, recently received the 1987
O.A.C. Proficiendy Award at the
"University of Guelph. She is cur-
rently in her third year of Landscape
Architecture.

Read Biblical accounts of Jesus'
birth, read Dickens' "Christmas Car-
ol" again were suggestions made by
Olive Thomson as she opened the.
December meeting of the afternoon

A highly satisfactory report of the
year's work was read by Olive.
Marion Dearing spoke of a plan
being formulated to provide aid to
people homebound, by care to in-
valids, and those caring for. Al-
zhcimcrs victims.
Members were asked to bring a
tea towel and a cup and saucer to the
January meeting.
Alma Langford and Jean Murray
introduced a study on God's coven-
ants with His people beginning
with the covenant expressed by the
rainbow that there would never be
another flood. Each promise was ex-
emplified by a paper symbol and
hung on a Chrisunas tree.

Margaret Coutes read from Luke
24 - the Resurrection - symbol a
butterfly - also the nativity - sym-
bol - a white rose.
Following the reading of Matt.
16: 24,25 and Matt. 2:12 by Mary
Neil the symbols of a cross and a
star were hung. Matt. 4:18-20 read
by Laura Dickey spoke of "fishers
of mcn" symbol a fish - Hebrews
6:18, 19 contains the thought- of
steadfastness - symbol an anchor.
Mark 1-10, 11 speaks.of priority -
symbol a dove. -
Audrey McRoberts introduced the
Trinity symbol a triangle, and a cir-

• Hazel Miller presented the letters
XP - the first two letters in the
word 'Christ'. Also a key as a.sym-
bol suggested in Matt. 16:18, 19. A
crown was the symbol suggested by
Rev. 2:10.
Ann Brodie played a piano solo
"Star of the East". Barb Harrison
read a story of a fifteen -year old
boy's discovery that his father loved
him and how this love spread
throughout the family.
Olive Thomson thanked the ladies
for their help during her two years
as leadei.
Jean Murray thanked Olive for her
fine leadership.
