New Format, Mohawk Illusion
Notice anything different?
It's a rhetorical question, I
knov'. If you've just spent the
last five minutes flipping
through the Sports pages look-
ing for this column, I apologize.
But the Times -Advocate Sports
desk (that'd be mc) has decided to
change he format of this not -so -
little weekly ditty in order to
make room for some of the more
pressing sports news that has
been flooding in recently.
When I arrived 'in Exeter, I
asked for the sporting communi-
ty's help -- and I've certainly re-
ceived it.
Monday mornings, the big pile
of stuff on my desk turns into a
small mountain. I set out to get
it down to a manageable size and
fit it onto the pages I'm.allotted
by the powers that be.
This incredible shrinking col-
umn should help me get all the
news out to you.
Because of the large volume of
minor hockey report sheets com-
ing into the T -A on Mondays, it
has become necessary to impose
certain deadlines. If a weekend
item arrives Tater than 7 p.m.
Monday evening, there is no
guarantee that it will find a spot
in that week's issue. As we re-
ceive more and more• sports
news, items will be published on
a first-comc, first -serve basis.
Please try to get the informa-
tion to us as soon as possible. It
would be appreciated if week-
night game results could be
dropped off Friday.
The Mohawk Illusion
Exeter Mohawks have a prob-
lem that many coaches and man-
agers can only dream wistfully
about: they've got so much tal-
ent on the squad that every game
they play resembles a cake -walk.
It's not true, of course. It only
looks that way.
If you look very closely, you'll
see beads of sweat on their brow
and a lot of hard work under their
belts.
No one has given Mohawks
the 13 wins they've managed to
accumulate in 14 games this sea-
son. Most of the match -up have
featured close scores in the first
and second periods. The majority
of their opponents in the Central
Senior B league can play with
them for 30 or 40 minutes. But
after that, the depth of the Exeter
team begins to show.
Mohawks don't have an unpro-
ductive line on the squad. Four
of their players are among the
top ten scoring leaders in the
league (Dave Randerson, Quincy
Wilker, Kris Bedard and Brian
Mercer). And in last Tuesday's
game against Tavistock, only
one of six goals was scored by a
forward.
Goalie Rick Pickul has the
honour of maintaining the best
goals against average in the
league with 2.89 in 600 minutes
of ice -time.
The rear -guard suffered a set-
back last week that might shake
a Tess balanced team to its foun-
dation.
Goaltendcr Randy 1-Ii1dc-
brant has been released after suf-
fering torn ligaments in his
knee. Hildebrant, now in a cast
from his hip to his ankle, may
be replaced this week by Sid
Kemp, a former Junior 13 Wind-
sor)3ulldog.
But for Mohawks, it will- be
pretty much business as usual.
Mohawks manager Doc Camp-
bell sums up the atmosphere in
the team's dressing room: "The
bottom line is -- we're enthused,
we're happy -- what else can you
say when you're 13-0-1."
Change in the wind
Central Senior B fans who are
waiting for things to heat up in
the league, may not have to wait
much longer. Durham Huskies, a
team which Campbell has sin-
gled out as a sleeper since the be-
gining of the season, have come
to life in the past two weeks.
They have jumped from the
bottom of the pile into second
place, increasing their 4-5-1
record to 7-5-1 in the blink of an
eye. The Mohawk manager notes
that Kevin Hopkins, the heart
and soul of the Huskies, will
soon be back from a suspension.
Campbell also points a com-
petitive finger at Harriston
Blues, who are right behind Dur-
ham in the standings. In both
cases, he maintains, Mohawks
arc full of respect for their oppo-
nents.
If you can't wait for Durham to
kick things into gear, there's an
exhibition game on the agenda
which might interest you. On
December 20, Mohawks will
play host to the OHA Senior
AAA Dundas "Real McCoys".
Dundas, formerly the Brantford
Motts Clamatos, won the pre-
stigious Allan Cup last year, de-
feating Nelson (B.C.) Lcafs in
four straight games. Their roster
includes the likes of former To-
ronto Maple Leafs Rocky Sagi-
nuck and goalie Don Edwards as
well as a numbcr of other ex -
pros.
Bullets
beaten
Exeter Big V Bullets edged out
Lucan 3-2 in Lambton-Middlesex
Peewee action Saturday afternoon.
After a scoreless first period, Lu -
can took a 2-0 Icad in the second.
Bullets were able to rally with one
goal late in the second and two in
the third.
Trailing 2-0, Exeter's Jason
McBride pumped in a shot with
2:49 remaining in the second. 1
Beckett and Greg Agnew drew as-
sists on the play.
In the third, Beckett scored his
first of the night from Agnew and
McBride after three minutes of play.
Beckett found the mark again to
brcak the tic minutes later, this'
time unassisted.
Juveniles beat Glencoe
Exeter Juveniles ended their week-
end on a positive note with a 4-1
win over Glencoe, Sunday. That
made up for the blasting they took
against Mooretown Saturday, when
they lost 8-0.
The fact that the Exeter bench was
short-handed Saturday figured prom-
inently in the outcome of Satukday's
game. Despite the score, however,
Exeter ,goalie Jason Van Haarlen
performed admirably between the

first period and then increased it

third period was scoreless.

was considerably different.

Lucan Novices
Lucan Novices' record sounds like
a TV game show this week after a
busy three game schedule in which
they won against Parkhill, lost tc
Mount Brydges and then fought to a
scoreless draw against.St. Marys.
Thursday night Mount Brydges
handed Lucan a 6-4 loss on the
strength of goals by Chris Cowan
(2), Greg Buis (2), and Scott Olden -
wing. .
Jeremy Brown scored two goals
for Lucan in the effort while Adam
Duskocy and Ryan Carroll scored
single markers.
Friday night Lucan came out on
top with a 4-1 win over Parkhill.
Parkhill jumped into the driver's
scat just 11 seconds into the game.
At the mid -way mark of the first,
a well placed pass from Brent Bella-
my sent Marty McLaughlin down
the ice to Score on a break away.
The score remained tied at one un-
til the third period whcn Lucan blew
the game wide open.
Brown scored in the first minute
of the final stanza from Duskocy
and then Duskocy added a goal of
his own during a power play. Car-
roll drew the assist on Duskocy's
goal.
Josh Appleman closed out the
scoring on a break away pass from
Mike Brady.
Sunday's match between Lucan
and St. Marys turned into a goal -
tender's showdown. Denver England
of Lucan and Shane Sheldon of St.
Marys played spectacular games to
post shut -outs.
Neither team was able to put a
mark on the board and the game
matched goals with Glencoe in the
third to secure their third league win
of the season.
Grant Hayter put the gears in mo-
tion just 46 seconds into the game
when he scored unassisted.
At 12:20, Pat Hartman found the
mark, making it 2-0 for Exeter.
Mike Bcrg and Darryl McCann drew
assists on.the play.
Exeter's Chris Thompson potted
the lone goal of the second after Jer-
ry Lamport set him up at 10:01.
In the third, Bryan Quinn gave
Exeter a four goal lead at 9:03.
Steve Pym assisted Quinn.
Glencoe's Mike Black scored his
team's only goal at 12:04, ruining
Van Haarlen's shut -out.
Juveniles now have a record of
three wins, three losses and one tie.

At
oms bumped by Goderich
Exeter Atoms were bumped off in
the final period of a game against
Goderich Sunday. Exeter held onto a
2-2 tic until the third period whcn
Goderich potted two unanswered
goals to win the game 4-2.
Jeff Sararas opened the scoring
early in the first when he picked up
a pass from Trevor Trucmncr and
Steve Stire. but Goderich was quick
to match it and the two teams strug-
gled into the second in a 1-1 dead-
lock.
In the second, Goderich took the
Icad, but it was countered when Sa-
raras again found the nct with a
shot.
Goderich dominated in the third to
win the game.
