CONCENTRATION - Exeter Public School grade seven students Steve Farquhar (left), Joe Campbell and Dar-
ryl Chappel cut and sew finger puppets. The project is part of the family life studies class at JAD McCurdy School
ly studies classes in Seaforth and
Godcrich in 1984. The program was
introduced in Wingham in 1986, and
for grade seven and eight students
from Exeter, Hensall, Zurich,. Us -
borne, Stephen and McCurdy at
JAD McCurdy in 1987.
Eileen Wise, who teaches the
family studies course, reports the
boys cnjoy it as much as the girls.
The grade sevens are now working
on pencil cases, and the grade eights
arc making gym shorts. .
Wise said the course is designed
to imitate family lifestyle, and
"there is no such thing as a one -sex
family; it's a team effort".
Industrial arts teacher Harry
Brooks is equally enthusiastic.
Whcn the students come into his
class, they arc assigned five initial
projccts to familiarize each with the
router and the lathe. They turn out
a routed sign, and turn a bowl on
the lather.
The students have freedom within
the guidelines to choose their pro-
jects' design and shape.
The students have also been intro-
duced to acrylic plastic, and have
made articles such as key chain tags
and pencil holders.
"I have had nothing but positive
feedback from both students and par-
ents", Brooks reported.
