Manure storage grants available As many producers are aware, grants are available from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food for construction of manure storage structures and for erosion control projects. This article will concen- trate on manure storages. All liquid manure storages arc eli- gible for a grant of 40 percent of the cost of construction including exca- vation and underground piping etc. to a maximum grant of S7,500.00. These storages must be sized to hold manure for at least 200 days. Solid manure storages are also eli- gible, provided the contaminated liq- uid that runs off the pad or cattle yard is collected. This usually mean' placing a concrete tank at the lowe end of a manure pad or yard. The tank should be sized to catch at least one foot of contaminated runoff over the areas of the entire pad and/or yard. Thiswill give you about 200 days of storage. Any liquid that runs ou of the barn Must be added, to obtain the total amount. Either of these storage systems arc eligible for a grant of 40 percent of the cost to a maximum grant of 57,500.00. In addition to this, the Ministry of the Environment has targeted certain watersheds in the area to receive ex- tra funds. If you live in the Maitland or Ausable Watershed in Huron County for example, you will re- ceive 40 percent of the cost to a; maximum grant of S12,500.00. All persons wishing to obtain a grant must first submit a project proposal form. This form is availa- ble at your local OMAF office.
