Van Dongen gets four
firsts in cross country
by Sheila Dougall
Over the past two years, Kim
Van Dongen has been a mem-
ber of South Huron's Midget
Girls Cross Country team.
Van Dongen, who has placed
first in four competitions dur-
ing the season, was ranked in
the top 15 in Ontario before
the OFFSA _competition.' At
OFFSA, she came in 14th
overall, which is the best posi-
tion a South Huron runner has
held in the school's history.
Asked about her training rou-
tine, Van Dongen said that dur-
ing the past summer she
trained off -and -on to build up
her endurance. When school
started she trained everyday af-
ter school.
She said Joe Fulop, head
coach of the cross country
team, was a great coach, noting
that he didn't push his runners
to:come in first but did expect
them to do their best.
On November 6-7, both the
Midget and Senior girls teams
attended OFFSA in Toronto.
This year, her second year in
midget, Van Dongen enjoyed
having the whole team for sup-
port at OFFSA. Last year she
was the only one representing
the school.
Shc managed to relax by
talking to the other members
of the team.
Van Dongen said she didn't
think about finishing first, but
thought only about Fulop's ad-
vice and.doing the best she
could.
When asked if she could
change one thing in her run-
ning, Van Dongen said that it
would be the way she lets little
things distract her.
"I was running once when
my shoelace came undone and
it bothered me the whole time
because I didn't know whether
to stop and tie it up or keep
going," Van Dongen ex-
plained.
Next year she will be mov-
ing up to Junior and though
she is looking forward to it,
Van Dongen knows the compe-
tition will be even tougher.
Though she doesn't think she
is ready to run in the Olympics
she hopes to continue running
while she attends university.
Crunchers lose in Belmont
Exeter Crunchers played well Sat-
urday but were downed 2-1 by Bel-
mont in the Atom division. -
Ladies bonspiel
Six teams took part in the first
Club Bonspiel on November 25.
Audrey McDonald skipped her
rink of E. McNair, S. Passmore and
E. Boyle to victory. Th
Julie Rattray with M.J. Chanyi,
L. Shapton and Dale Bland placed
second.
Bea Dawson took third prize. M.
Brunzlow, M. Chalmers and D.
Kipfer made up the Dawson team.
Belmont scored once in the first
and again in the second period while
Exeter's goal came at 10:02 of the
third period when Geoff Hann put
the puck in the net on a pass from
Matt Sims.
Crunchers put a great deal of pres-
sure on the. Belmont team, and, de-
spite several near goals, were unable
to even the score.
Goalie Michael Schwindt made
several key saves.
The team's passing and defensive
patterns have shown steady im-
provement in the last few games
and will certainly help in upcoming
games.
Exeter hosts Belmont next Satur-
day.
Petites rout Forest
Exeter Petites Ringette Team
hosted the Forest Petites Saturday
and beat their guests 10-3.
Leading the scoring for Exeter
was Carrie Simpson with three
goals and two assists.
Following close behind Simpson
were Sonya Lawrence and Cara
Gardner, both with two goals and
one assist.
Jenny Hardy, Helen Theo and Ja-
nice Sanders all scored one goal and
one assist.
Two more assists came from
Leeann Foster and Judi Wilson add -
cd one.
Exeter's defence, Danielle Miners,
Jody Hamilton, Andrea Urlin and
Katie Armstrong helped their goal -
tender, Jana Webster, keep the goals
against to a minimum.
Saturday, Petites travel to Gode-
witioNseresiret
ii_
rich for a one day tournament, and
play at Seaforth Sunday in the
fourth game of the regular season.

Legionaires taking Bantam division by storm
Exeter Legionaires are charging
through the Bantam division of the
Shamrock league with seven
straight victories. Wednesday Le-
gionaires pounded Mount Brydges
8-3. They followed that with a 4-2
victory over Goderich Elevators Fri-
day and a 9-0 rout over Parkhill
Sunday.
Al Blommaert gave Exeter a 1-0
lead in the first period Wednesday
after he picked up a pass from Dave
O'Connor.
That goal stood until the second
period when Steve Dubarry, Jason
Hern and Jamie Bedard added to it.
Blommaert and Joel Campbell as-
sisted on Dubarry's goal while Hern
received help from Harlen Tinney.
Bedard was set up by O'Connor.
Mount Brydges managed one goal
• in the second period.
In the third, Jeremy Mason scored
from Dubarry to make the score 5-1
in favour of Exeter.
Tim Van Dam put the puck in the
net from Dubarry and Todd McCann
and then Blommaert added another
goal unassisted.
McCann rounded out the scoring
for Exeter with a goal from Dubarry
and Van Dam.
Legionaires found themselves in a
tougher match Friday when they
came up against Goderich.
Elevators took a 2-1 lead in the
second, but Exeter rallied in the sec-
ond pumping in three goals and
•clinching the lead.
O'Connor was the only Exeter
goal scorer in the first. He com-
bined with McCann and Mason for
the goal.
In the second, Mark Burton got
credit for a goal scored when a
Goderich player accidentally put the
puck in his own net.
Steve Dubarry then scored from
Burton and Bedard combined with
Dave Dalrymple and McCann.
Goderich was unable to rally.
Jason Clarke was in the Exeter
net for the win.
Legionaires 9 - Parkhill 0
Despite the seemingly lopsided
score, Clarke earned his shut -out in
goal for Exeter Sunday when Le-
gionaires sent Parkhill home with a
goose egg.
Tinney and Dave O'Connor scored
unassisted in the first period to give
Exeter a 2-0 lead.
In the second, Joel Campbell
started the scoring when he picked
up a pass from Bedard and Dave
Waxers fight to tie in Port Stanley
Exeter Novice Waxers fought to a
2-2 tic Sunday when they travelled
to Port Stanley for a Shamrock
League game.
Key saves by Exeter goalie Jason
Lindcnfield and Port Stanley's Neil
Rooke kept the game even. Linden -
field received some support from the
strong defensive effort Adam Hern
put forward.
Waxers held a 2-0 lead until the
third period when Port Stanley
rattled in two goals to tie the game.
Jeff Sararas potted an impressive
goal with 5:40 left in the first peri-
od. Sararas took the puck. behind
Port Stanley's net, wrapped around
and stuffed it in past the goalie on
the short side, unassisted.
It was Sararas who scored Exeter's
second goal as well. With just 48
seconds left in the second period,
Jeff MacLean fed the puck to Sara-
ras who out it in the net.
