Lucan Novices capture 'A' title of CC tournament
After fighting out a 3-2 win over
Ildcrton in three tough periods of
hockey, Lucan Novices made it
look easy in the 'A' championship
final of the Exeter Novice 'CC'
tournament on the weekend.
Lucan handed Port Stanley a 10-2
loss to clinch top honours at the
day long tourney held at the South
Huron Rec Centre.
Lambeth Novices captured the 'B'
title, putting Exeter out of the way
with a cliff-hanger of a win, and
then defeating Kitchener 5-1 in the
final.
In the 'A' championship final, Lu -
can took a two point lead in the
first period on goals by Mike Brady
and Brent Bellamy.
Port Stanley scored in the first
minute of play in the second period,
keeping things close, but a goal by
Josh Appleman at 8:55 countered
that goal and gave Lucan a platform
to push off from.
Jeremy Brown and Bellamy scored
in the first two minutes of the third
period.
At 6:38 Adam Duskocy found the
[nark after he picked up a pass from
Kurtis Hardy and then eight seconds
later Brown scored his second goal
of the game. As if that minute
wasn't tough enough on Port Stan-
ley, Appleman pumped in a shot at
6:59.
Goals by Bellamy and Marty
McLaughlin effectively finished the
game but Port Stanley's Tyler Kee-
nan scored before the clock wound
down.
Lucan downed Ildcrton 3-2 to
make their way into the final.
Ildcrton jumped into the lead with
a goal at 1:54 of the first period and
then, after a scoreless second, added
another goal in the early part of the
third, leaving Lucan apparently high
and dry.
. But Lucan exploded in the last
half of the final period, scoring
three goals and snatching the lead
away from Ilderton.
Ryan Carroll sparked the team
with a goal from Bellamy and
McLaughlin at 6:42 and then Ap-
pleman followed his lead, pumping
in a shot at 9:04. Crain' Miller as-
sisted on the play.
The two teams were locked in an
epic 2-2 struggle until, with just
1:54 remaining on the clock, Bella-
my put the puck in the net for the
game -winning goal.
Carroll drew the lone assist on the
play.
Lucan 2 - Exeter 0
Lucan Novices managed to push
Exeter out of the 'A' round in the
first •game of the day, Saturday,
when they handed the home team a
2-0 loss.
It was not an easy victory, how-
ever.
The two teams fought it out
through two full periods before ei-
ther squad was able to make a mark
on the scoreboard.
Both Lucan goals were scored in
the third by Duskocy who was set
up both times by Brown.
Lucan headed down the road to the
'A' championship while Exeter vied
for the 'B' honours against Lamb-
eth.

• Steve Gould capitalized on a sec-
ond power play opportunity at 9:34

Lambeth's Jeff Seaman scored at
12:20 and then Plasket potted his
second of the evening at 18:29 to

teams entered the third.
Plasket's•handy work gave Lamb-

with one of his own, locking Exeter
into a 4-4 tie which they clung to,
with the help of goaltender Dave

With 6:52 remaining in the peri-
od, Tim Hayter pumped in a shot
off the sticks of Brad Muir and
Craig to restore Lucan's lead.
The tables turned in the second.
While Lucan had out -shot Bel-
mont 12-9 in the first, Belmont
pounded the Irish net with 26 shots
in the second and Lucan mustered
only nine.
Two of those Belmont shots
found the mark. Goals by Jordan
and Richard'Clark gave Belmont a
4-3 lead heading into the third.
They added three more goals in
the final period by Paul Gilks, Todd
Clark and Griffin.
The only Irish response was made
by Jeff Flirtzell, who connected with
Muir and Mike Hirtzell to score.

effort while his counter -part, Bill

Exeter answered that goal with a
flurry of markers. Trevor Taylor

Exeter's fourth goal at 10:08 after
he picked up a pass from DeBruyn.
A shot from Jamie van Dam

sic battles in which the fans hate to
sec tither team lose.
Exeter and Lambeth skated
through three periods of good hock-
ey which featured excellent defen-
sive and offensive play, good goal-
dending and an even share of missed
opportunities.
It all boiled down to a shoot-out:
Lambeth sunk Exeter's ship with
two well aimed shots, while at the
other end, Lambeth goalie Carston
Leishmon stopped Exeter's best ef-
forts.
Exeter goalie Jason Lindenfield
made his way through three periods
of scoreless hockey and is also to be
commended for his efforts.

half of the game when Sarah Ker-

up by Jill Sararas.
With two minutes left in the first,
Goderich's Trish Rumig beat goalie
Tonya Riehl, who played an out-
standing game in net for Exeter.
Two more goals by Rumig put
Goderich in the lead in the second
half, but the combination of Tiffany
Tryon and Lisa Forest put Exeter
back in the lead.
Tryon scored` two goals less than
three minutes apart, assisted both
times by Forest.
With 4:50 remaining in the game,
Forest scored a goal of her own, as-
