Clandeboye landmark closes
A well-known landmark for over
140 years, the Clandeboyc General
Store, closed its doors on Saturday,
November 28.
The most recent owner is Mamie
Makidd, who purchased it from
Mrs. Barbara Carter, a year ago in
July. Barbara had the business for
30 years, four years of that as post-
mistress. The post office closed in
1970.
Before that, Barbara's parents,
Maurice and Isobel Simpson, kept
the store, during which time Mau-
rice was postmaster for over 40
years. Maurice's parents and sister
Ruth had the store and post office
for many years before Maurice re-
placed them.
At time of writing, I haven't had
time to research all the previous
storekeepers but the first storekeeper
in Clandeboye was supposedly Pa-
trick Flanagan for whom the hamlet
of Flanagan's Corners, (now
Clandeboye) was named. That was
circa 1840.
The Clandcboye General Store
will be missed, not only for the
convenience it supplied to its resi-
dents and those who travelled by,
but we will miss a very pleasant
and familiar face, Marilyn Lee, who
worked there for several years, as
well as the, recent owner, Marnie
Makidd.
BVI hosted by Parkhill
Several members of Clandeboye
Women's Institute travelled to Park-
hill on Wednesday to be guests of
the Cloverdale Women's Institute.
Guest speakers were Elizabeth
McHugh, who spoke on the duties
of a public health nurse, and Mrs.
Letts, who spoke on aging and gave
out information on programs and
services for senior citizens.
Sympathy is extended to the
many relatives in our community
on the death of Mrs. Edyth Watson,
of Lucan. Funeral was held on Sat-
urday with
Cemetery.

The death notice of Billy Whit-
more of London appeared in Satur-
day's paper. Billy grew up in the
Clandeboye arca and attended school
there. His parents worked for the
railroad and lived for many years in
the station house at Lucan crossing.
His funeral was held from Ailsa
Craig, on Monday. Interment at St.
James Cemetery, Clandeboye.
