I started thinking this way two summers ago when I took up cy- cling. I just settled into a good disciplined routine when my rear tire went•flat. Tires never go flat one block from your house. That's an unwrit- ten rule. And so, after a two mile walk home, after struggling with tubes and rims and chains, I had a new tire. It went flat too. "Bad luck," I muttered, winding my way through the whole pro- cess again. Tire number three lasted roughly three hours and when it went, it took my cycling career with it. I ushered out that phase of 'the struggle' with a few choice superlatives from "Bob's book of bar- room colloquialisms". After that I turned to weight training, something I've tumed to on and off since high school (usually off more than on). I joined a fit- ness club and again worked myself into a good program. I began to show progress in 1`.4ay of this year and then fate played its hand once more. I moved to Exeter. So here I am. Out of shape, over -weight and looking for an an- swer. A while ago I thought I had it. I heard about squash courts in Hensall and I immediately pictured myself out there, bashing that little ball around, losing weight almost on an hourly basis. When I finally inquired about the facility, I found the fates laugh- ing hysterically in my round little face. Whoever is in charge of the "keep Mark fat" campaign went so fur as to move the courts. Funny. Actually, I did find the person who is responsible for the remov- al of the Hensall courts: Sherry Hicks. But Hicks has come to my rescue. She is in the process of build - Sports Spotlight by \lark Bisset Y 3, ing a fitness centre called Total Concept. The centre is scheduled to open around Christmas and if it's anything like Hicks describes it, I'll have no-one to blame but myself should I lose the next battle in "the struggle". Fitted with a sauna, a whirlpool, exercise equipment, free weights, squash and racquette-ball courts, and live fitness instruc- tors, Total Concept is going to replace the Hensall courts. Hicks hopes to keep the price structure reasonable. "I'm hoping to keep the cost really low for students -- I have a 14 -year-old -- and what really is there to do in Exeter," she said, V:MaSIMMOROBAMMeagr 'fi\kV.K R4.'.k?',..N±9v' ``G: Wit¢?. Wa? For teams interested in training together there will be group rates and students will have special rates as well. Hicks said that the adult fee will be roughly $50 registration fee and then $20 per month, which works out to $290 per year -- not a bad price considering the cost of comparable fitness clubs. Total Concept will be located near Stephen's Furniture on High- way 4. I personally hope to spend some time there once the doors swing open. Maybe I can get Sherry Hicks`to buy one of those adds with "before and after" pictures of me on it. Novice tourney This weekend Exeter Minor Hockey is hosting a Novice tourna- ment sponsored by Frayne Chev-Olds. The tourney is going to be held all day Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m. and running through to 8 p.m. Eight Novice travelling teams will be participating in the event. Exeter and Lucan kick the competition off with a game first thing in the morning. That will be followed by games between Lambeth and Ilderton, Shelboume and Port Stanley, and Kitchener and Dor- chester. For a mere $2 per game or $3 for the day, you can sec the game played the way it was meant to be played.
