They did it again Sunday night -- this time against their toughest Hardy Cup competi- tors in the Central Senior B league. Elora Rocks came into South Hu- ron arena Sunday night, played one good period of hockey, and then were swept up by the power -house combinations of the Exeter Mo- hawks. Elora lost 12-2 in a game that stood at 2-1 after the fust period. Sunday's win over Elora secures Mohawks spot in the Hardy Cup competition as far as the Central Senior B league is concerned. Mohawks head coach Jim Guenth- er doesn't believe his team's success is based on a reputation that pre- cedes them. But he does admit that Mohawks' opponents know what y'reeuupdagainst by the end of the first"We've had a lot of games like that (Sunday's game)," Guenther said. "Once our guys get on track and get rolling, they're really intim- idating the other teams and the other teams just seem to be giving tip." Though it is true that anything can happen in the game of hockey, it now seems that Mohawks biggest problem will be keeping the players sharp and motivated throughout the season. Guenther expressed confidence in the maturity of the team, noting that they have enough experience under their belts to shake off a prob- lem of that nature. There were no problems on Exet- er's side of the red line Sunday night. Dave Randerson started the scor- ing at 5:10 of the first after he put the puck in the net with the help of Quincy Wilker. He also started an- other three goal night for himself. Elora's Dave Farris tied the game at 7:59 when he scored on a pass from Greg Voison. At 17:40, Jeff Shipley scored dur- ing a power play to give Exeter the lead. Assists on the play went to Randy Kraul and Rob Mackie. Mohawks exploded with a scoring flurry in the second, unable to miss the mark. Of the ten shots on Elo- ra's goal in the second, eight beat Rocks goalies Gary Trimble and Steve Barker. Just 23 seconds into the middle period, Dale Gibbon put the puck in the net from Brian Mercer and John xemick. One minute later, Kenrick scored unassisted. At 3:03, Randerson scored his second of the night from Bill Glo- ver and then Wilker added one of his own while Mohawks were short- handed at 7:31. Shipley and Al Gates then went into action. Shipley scored at 9:06 and 15:43, assisted both times by Gates. Randy Bailey added a goal at 18:03 from Glover and Scott Eccles and then with less than one minute remaining in the second, Randerson scored his third goal. Paul Barton and Wilker drew assists on the play. Kris Bedard scored two goals in the third, one during a power play. He was assisted by Ron Elliott and Randerson at 3:51 and by Glover at 7:23. Elora managed a goal at 11:05 of the final period when Gary Lloyd scored from Paul MacDonald and Rick Heller. Mohawks pumped 33 shots at Elora's net. ave Shaw a hit New York Rangers defence - man Dave Shaw, a native of Exeter, found a spot on the Global ';Television Network program Sports Line after he made the "hit of the week" in the NHL. Shaw caught former Quebec Nordique team-mate Wilt' Pai- ment with a good clean check which flipped Paiment over the boards and into the Rangers bench. f, In answer to a few short Pai- ment superlatives, Shaw sug- gested that he check the colour of his sweater and pointed out that he seemed to be sitting on the wrong bench. Bruce Shaw said Monday that the defenceman is playing at the top of his game at this point in the season. Shaw has picked up two as- sists in four games since he re- turned to the line-up after re- covering from a separated shoulder injury sustained early in the season. Hawks streak continues With a 9-3 win over Seaforth Sunday, Exeter Hawks graduated into a nine game winning streak, one of the most substantial runs the club has seen. Hawks now stand in first place in their division with 14 wins, two losses and one tie, two points ahead of Wellesley. With that record goes the best goals -against average in the league and a third place spot in the over-all scoring race. Last season, Hawks' longest win- ning streak went just three games. "It's been quite a turn -around in the last year and I give full credit to the guys," head coach Dave Bogart said. "We're doing it at both ends of the rink -- it's not a fluke that we're in first place." Bogart pointed to this Friday's game (November 27), explaining that it will be one of the big games of the season. "Our opposition this week is Lambeth and they're the only team in the league we haven't beaten," he said. "This is a big game for us in a lot of ways, both in the standings and morale -wise." In their last meeting with Lamb- eth, Hawks dropped a 9-0 decision. "We've had some pretty easy games -- we've played Clinton, Sea - forth seven or eight times -- compe- tition like that can only lead to bad habits," Bogart said. "It'll be inter- esting to see whether they (Hawks) can make the adjustment.'
