Centennials celebrate "different sort of year"
The 1987 Exeter Centennials
would like to thank the Exeter Mi-
nor Soccer Club for their support
again this season.
It was a different sort of ycar for
the club. After being the 1986 Aus-
able League Champions, the club
seemed to have a problem finishing
plays and scoring goals. The team
generally controlled play well but
were unable to capitalize when the
chances came.
The four teams Icft from the 1986
SPORTSMANSHIP AND DEDICATION - Craig Winbow of the
Exeter Centennial Senior soccer club received the sportsmanship and dedi-
cation award from Joc Laurie at their recent banquet .
Ausablc League had joined the Lon-
don & District Second Division for
1987 with Grand Bend ending up
first in the West Division, Exeter
third, Nairn fourth and Real West
fifth out of a eight team division.
The competition was very good.
The Exeter club had an unfortu-
nate year with injuries to some very
key players. Early in the season, the
club lost Maurice and Jerry Van De
Walla for the balance and their pres-
ence was missed. During the sea-
son, injuries held back players like
John Flanagan, John Muller, Dic'
Lord and Joe Laurie.
Some new players that joined tl
club new in 1987 were a big help
the likes of Chuck Walker, Mil
Pratt and Ray Lewis. Craig Wit
bow filled the gap in goal for tl
team quite well. It was a big su
for Craig and both the team ar
Craig arc confidcnt the first ycar c:
pericncc will go a long way in h
ability.
A big asset to the club was the r
turn of John Van Esbrocck. H
ability and experience fitted in we
with the strong performance fro
the regular returns like Joc Marten
Dale Regier, Francis Hartmai
Shawn O'Rourke, Gerald Weersit
and Wayne Smith. The usual stror
performance was displayed by cent
striker Paul Van De Walle.
The total season record for a
club ended up with eight wins, fi'
losses and three ties. The tea)
scored a total of 33.goals with 3
against. The team was way down i
goal output compared to the 1986
season.
The club would also like to thank
friends and relatives who supported
the team throughout the season.
Honourable mention to Mr. and
Mrs. Arnold Martens and John Ra-
senberg of JMR Electric for their
extra support.
We arc confident that next season
will be enjoyed by everyone from
1987 returning and anyone else that
would be interested in the great
game of soccer.
