UCW at Dashwood remember

A white cross adorned with red
poppies was displayed at Remem-
brance Day was observed by the
United Church Women at their reg-
ular meeting November 10.
Alice Tiernan chairlady of the
World Outreach group, welcomed
20 ladies. The meeting opened by
singing "0 God Our Help in Ages
Past". Responsive reading "Justice
and Freedom was read.
Maida Gaiser told about a Canadi-
an Victoria Cross winner, Lieuten-
ant Colonel Charles Merritt, a com-
manding Officer of the South
Saskatchewan Regiment.
The morning of August 19, 1942
he and his 5,000 Canadian troops
landed at Dieppe. The casualties
were 3,000 killed and nearly 1000
taken prisoner.
Col. Merritt stayed on the beach
under fire until all his men returned
to their boats. He was taken prison-
er and spent three years in the camp
in Germany. It was there he learned 1
he had been awarded the Victoria
Cross, the highest award for valour
in the British Commonwealth.
A minutes silence was observed in
memory of those who lost their
lives and for the loved ones who
were left behind.
An Armistice Day Worship Pa-
geant "The Hope of the World" was
presented.
Miss Kathy Wagner favored with
severpl piano selections. The wor-
ship portion closed by singing "God
of Our Fathers".
President Maida Gaiser conducted
the business. Donations were ap-
proved to send to various charitable
organizations.
The U.C.W. sponsored, with the
support of the businessmen in the
area, a booklet entitled "Fighting
Back" against drug and alcohol
abuse. It will be placed in doctors
and dentist officers, libraries,
churches etc.
The Sunshine Committee for No-
vember is Bernice Boyle and Grace
Memer.
Rev. Bob Sinasac presided for the
election of officers. The offices were
voluntarily filled. Pres.- Karen Tie -
man; Vice -Pres. Charlene Edwards;
Sec. Jane Newman, Treas. Mary
Ann Bender.
Group leaders; World Outreach,
Bernice Boyle; Church in Society,
Elizabeth Hendrick; Christian De-
velopment Eleanor Weigand; Ste-
wardship and Finance and Leader-
ship; Martha Weigand.
Door prize winners
Miss Carol Zimmer was pleased
with the attendance at the Avon
Open House and Craft Sale last
Tuesday and Wednesday. The door
prize winners were : Rose Rader,
Julie Restemeyer, Tracy Stirc, Ar-
nctta Baker, Norma Cockwill.
Business Association
The Business Association held
their meeting Monday, November 9
at the Dashwood Community Cen-
tre with the new executive in
charge. President Mrs. Donna Hoff-
man, Vice -Pres. Ronald Merner,
Sec. Mrs. Marilyn Zimmer, Treas.
David Rader.
The secretary reported the Wel-
come Wagon committee delivered
plants to four new residents and one
business.
It was decided to hold a post
Christmas dinner, January 30 fol-
lowed by a dance. Members will be
selling tickets.

Jill Stojkovic presided over the
opening devotions. Pastor Larry
took the topic "Melchizebek".
The members drew names and each
lady visits that person instead of a
visitation group.
Nancy Rader was re-elected as pres-
ident; 1st vice is Frieda Hayter.
For December 8 meeting members
are to invite a guest and gifts. Janu-
ary meeting they are having a mi-
crowave demonstration. More infor-
mation after Christmas.
The community extends their con-
gratulations and Gods richest bless -
filled to capacity. The children's
choir sang at the special service, un-
der the direction of the Pastors tal-
ented wife Jill Stojkovic.
Sunday November 8 Mrs. Pearl
Miller, celebrated her 80th birthday
at the Dashwood Community Cen-
tre. Two hundred signed the guest
'book and wished her a happy birth-
day. Sixty-six people sat down to a
delicious supper.
Mr. Ecron LaFond from Monro-
via, California, who hadn't been
here for 14 years joined his sister
Pearl to celebrate her birthday. He
went to Sarnia Sunday after visiting
ings on Pastor Larry Stojkovic with Pearl and other relatives and
who was installed in Zion Lutheran friends and will be flying back to
Church, Sunday. The church was California this Wednesday.
