Panthers make their presence known in Ontario
With a very significant 14 seconds showing on the clock Satur-
day afternoon, Jon O'connor kicked a field goal, giving Senior Pan-
thers football team the championship and capping off what has
to be one of the finest weeks in the history of South Huron athletics.
And it. didn't just happen here in Exeter.
Even as O'Connor and his team mates were revelling over the
fact that they had kept their- balance in the cliff-hanger of the
season, something was happening.
All over Southern Ontario, people were asking the question:
'what are they feeding those kids?"
They must have been collecting the Wheaties boxtops for next
season in Toronto after the South Huron Midget girls overcame
injury and illness to place third at OFSAA on Saturday. That's
number three out of a grand total of 650 schools.
Kim Van Dongen turned in the best performance a South Huron -
runner has ever recorded at OFSAA, placing 14th.
And it was just around that time in Goderich that Matt William-
son dove on a loose ball in Goderich's end -zone to become an ins -
_cant hero.

There's a story. Williamson saw limited action on the field with
the Junior Panther's this season, and then when he was given a
chance in the big game, he came up like.a champion.

to test the water in the South Huron fountains. .
There was no shortage of heart on the other side of Southwestern
Ontario either. Half way up Hamilton Mountain, Lisa Ellerington
was helping her field hockey team mates through a semi-final
game at OFSAA. She played the entire game with a broken wrist
j.
-- an accomplishment in itself. But she didn't leave it at that. She
also scored South Huron's only goal.
Panther's field hockey team actually lost their last two games
on that beautiful Saturday, both by a score of 2-1, but I don't think
that means very much -- those were the only losses they suffered
all season.
Beside that, as the girls' coach Jim Workman cheerfully noted,
being fourth in the entire province is nothing to be gloomy about.
Somebody's mother called me Monday morning to make sure
I had plans to congratulate Workman for the job he did with the
field hockey team. I do congratulate him, and I'll extend that to
Ron Bogart, and Dave Cox, Senior and Junior football coaches
respectively, and to Joe Fulop, who guided the cross-country team
through their season. . -
Someone must have wished them all a good weekend.
Congratulations to the kids who wear the Panther colours as well.
This week, if you see a South Huron athlete' on the street, shake
hands with them -- you might win a lottery.

"In the second period we let down
a few times and our power play
wasn't very effective— inconsistent
that was the problem," Dave Rev-
ington, Lucan's head coach said after
the game.
Revington said the team is beginn-
ing to balance out. It is no longer
disastrous when one or two key
players are missing.
"We're just having to use some of
our younger guys," he said. " Each
game they learn something, each
practice they pick something ftp I
hope. They can't expect to jump right
into the line-up and be world
beaters."
Belmont took the lead just 53
seconds into the first period Wednes-

and he was their last cut," said Jim
Hern, manager of the Irish. "Our feel-

then we have to let him go."
