Times-Advocate, 1987-11-04, Page 14Page 2A Times -Advocate,, November 4, 1987 Clippings from a Maple Leaf Fan's scrapbook I have a friend who always says: "in life, timing is everything". I've come to the conclusion: that he's absolutely right and so, when I opened the London Free Press Monday morning and saw that the Toronto Maple Leafs have broken the three-way tie for first place in the.Norris division, Idecided it was:time for a col- umn about them. Yes, ladies and gentleman, Toronto is in first place. They beat Chicago 6-5 Saturday night to give themselves a grand total of 12 points. Those 12 wonderful points would put them in se- cond place in the Smythe division, fourth in the Patrick division and third in the Adams division, but who cares about that. In the Norris division Leafs are kings -- at least for a day or so. Last season when Toronto edged into first place in a similar fashion, I had a copy of the division standings enlarged and I tacked it up on the wall in hopes of toning down some of the laughter in the office. I'm• not going to do that this year. It didn't work out that well. I've always claimed to be an honest Maple Leaf fan. When things got really bad in the Gardens a couple of years ago, I hung on, though I was admittedly quiet about the whole thing. My father took me to the Gardens for the first time when I was MilitaMilaaftleftkitMellatatill1.1101114141t..,–T- CAUGHT FROM BEHIND — Exeter Mohawks goalie Rick Pickul takes a shot rom behind as he clears the puck behind his net. But last week I met a real Toronto Maple Leaf fan. I had the honour of riding on a bus driven by Harvey Smith. UM «:.• In the "Write On!" section of the Free Press a Leaf fan wrote that he was tired of people speaking negatively about Harold Ballard and Gerry McNamara. Of McNamara the man wrote: "Gerry McNamara...is, despite popular belief, probably one of the best GM's in the game today." This man isn't just a Toronto fan, he's wearing blue and white blinkers. McNamara? Gerry McNamara? Can we be talking about the man who gave away Mike Bossy, who sold Randy Carlyle? Is this the same Gerry McNamara who just picked up Dave Semenko in the hockey acquisition of the century? Granted, he does seem to have come out on top with the latest Al Secord, Ed Olczyk/Rick Viave, Steve Thomas deal, but I'm sure it was totally by accident. - The writer finishes his letter with this beauty: "A better com- bination of owner and GM teamwork to bring a winner to a city is not likely to be found in the NHL today." I think it's safe to let the Leaf's record do the talking on that one. After all, it's not as if they've been tripping over that big cup much in the last 20 years.
