South Huron's girls field hockey
team came away from Parkhill Fri-
day afternoon with the 1987 WOSSA
championship after defeating St.
Marys Salukis 1-0 in the final game of
the three day tournament.
With that win, Panthers earned the
right to advance to OFSAA which will
be held in Hamilton, November 5-7.
Exeter's Tina Campbell was
awarded as the tournament's high
scorer after the final game. Campbell
scored the only goal of the final and
was responsible for two goals in South
Huron's 4-1 win over Strathroy in the
preliminary rounds.
Panthers coach, Jim Workman said
after Friday's battle that the final
was a tough match.
"It was a hard fought one," he said.
"I think the' nerves were playing a
part on both sides."
He noted that St. Marys usually
provides the biggest hurdle of the
season for Panthers, and because of
that, the WOSSA win is a sweet one.
"They're always our main com-
petitors as far as South Huron is
concerned."
The two teams battled back and
fourth at even strength in the first half
of the final game, but Exeter began
to dominate in the second.
That domination paid off when Tina
Campbell found the mark to score the
winning goal.
St. Marys spent most of the second
half hemmed into their own end.
When they did manage to break out.
South Huron's defence quickly broke
up the advance.
The Exeter girls found their way in -
spm
to the final by downing Strathroy 4-1
on the strength of Campbell's goals
along with those of Kim Crawford and,
Leanne Dietrich.
Lisa Ellerington led the team often'
sively against West Elgin in their se
cond game of the tournament, scor.
ing two goals. Jeanette Kaak added
a single to Ellerington's markers and
South l luron wor) the game 3-1 to earn
a berth in the final.
Workman is now looking toward
OFSAA where the competition will be
stiff, and though he declined the op-
portunity to predict another cham-
pionship, he does expect results from
the team.
"I'd like to think we're in i OFSSA
with a good chance," he said Friday.
"I'd like to stay in .the top halt
anyway."
The tourney format consists of four
pools of teams which will play Thurs-
day to decide quarter -finalists. The
- first and second place teams from
each pool will be matched up Friday
.to decide four semi-finalists who will
meet Saturday morning. A bronze
and gold medal game will be held
Saturday afternoon.
A CHAMPIONSHIP GOAL — A outh Huron Player jumps high to celebrate what was to be the winn-
ing goal Friday morning in the final game of the WOSSA tournament. Lisa Ellerington (10) reacts to
the goal as Leanne Dietrich moves in to congratulate her team mates. South Huron settled the rivalry
between Exeter and DCVI for the season when they beat them 1-0 in the WOSSA championship game.
The South Huron girls team will advance to OFSAA next week in Hamilton for a three day tournament
to decide the Ontario champions.

Shaw
injured
The honeymoon is over for
defenceman Dave Shaw in New
York.
Two weeks ago the Exeter
native was trying to force an in-
coming player to the outside dur-
ing an NHL game against
Washington Capitols when he fell
to the ice along the boards. Shaw's
opponent fell on top of him, poun-

The injury put a damper on an
otherwise good start with New
York Rangers. Shaw said Friday
that he expected to be out of the
line-up for at least 10 more days.
"My shoulder was slightly
separated and 1 was supposed to
be out for four to six weeks, but 1
think we're down to two or three
weeks so it should he about

Asked if he thought the injury
would affect his chances of earn-
ing a full time position on the ice,
Shaw pointed to the team's future
fortunes.
"I guess it depends on how the
team is playing when I get back,"
he said. "If they're not winning
every game I should be able to get
back (into the line-up), but if
they're on a winning streak it
might take a little longer."
Rangers are currently in fourth
place in the Patrick division with
four wins, six losses and three ties.
Sunday night they were beaten 7-6
by Edmonton Oilers.
Shaw is no stranger to the
sidelines. Last season he played 72
of Quebec Nordique's 80 games but
missed the playoffs due to a bout
with Mononucleosis. The year
before that he played in 75 of 80
games but was out with broken
wrist in post season play.
With the exception of his
shoulder, Shaw and his wife Trjsh
are settling into life in New York
city.
"The people down town are a lit-
tle different, but we're adjusting
And we really like it."
"It's a lot different than
Quebec," Shaw adds. "We don't
practice in Madison Square
Gardens. We have a practice rink
and it's an hour out of town."
The defenceman plans to buy a
condominium near the practice
rink to avoid battling heavy traf-
fic on a daily basis.
Shaw went to New York from
Quebec in a trade package with
John Ogrodnick at the beginning of
the season. At that time, Rangers
coach Michel Bergeron called him
"the most under -rated
defenceman in the National
Hockey League".

separate sessions of Public Skating.
One session will be for children under
10 years of age. The child may be ac-
companied on the ice by an adult on-
ly c 19 years and up).
This, management feels, will create
a safer and more enjoyable environ-
ment for both children to parents.
The price will stay the same. i 50
cents per child and $1.00 per adult.
At 2:30 p.m. anyone aged 10 and
above are welcome to come and tear
up and down the ice at their own pace.
However, management still ex-
pects this group to follow the rules
that are posted in the arena regarding
public skating. (No tag, no chasing.
and no human chains. )
"After all", an arena official said. •
"This is a form of recreation to get
and stay fit, not a place to come and
take out aggression.
Anyone not complying with those
rules will be rerhoved from the arena.
The program will be on a trial basis
until the New Year and if people are
enjoying and making use of the public
skating time it will continue.
