Hawks beat Brussels
Exeter Hawks travelled to Brussels
Sunclay and avenged the loss that
Brussels had forced on them last
week on home ice. Hawks beat
Brussels 8-2 in their second meeting
• of the season.
Dave Bogart's prediction that the
next meeting between the two teams
PagelA would be different came true before
the second period got under way Sun -
PUSH COMES TO SHOVE — Lucan's Ian Craig takes a dive onto Thed-
ford goalie Mike Sanders during a last minute scuffle in front of the
Thedford goal. Behind the net, Mike Hirtzell waits his turn to give
Sanders "what -for". In a last ditch effort to tie the game Wednesday
night in Lucan, Irish pulled goalie Poul Woolford and then used the
extra man to harass Thedford's net minder. The tactic didn't work.
Lucan lost the game 4-3.
Irish drop tough game to Thedford
After recording the most successful
stretch of their season last week,
Lucan Irish allowed themselves to be
edged out 4-3 by Thedford Wednesday
night.
Head coach Dave Revington was
bitter about the loss.
"You can't play a 20 minute hockey
game," he said, indicating that his
team had done just that.
Thedford surprised Lucan with a
goal just six seconds into the first
period when Scott Lave beat goalie
Paul Woolford with a shot out of the
face-off.
But Revington maintained that -the
slow start had little to do with the loss.
"They (Thedford) just got a break
off the draw and the shot went in. It
was a good shot -- you can't defend
against that."
Thedford added another goal to
their lead after 2:27 of play when
Steve Moffat scored from Rick

With 3:31 left in the first, Lucan
replied with a goal from Ian Craig.
Assists went to Tim Hayter and
Jamie Greig:
The two teams carried the 2-1 score
into the second period.
Irish skated lazily onto the ice at the
start of the second and within 1:13,
Thedford had re -instated their two
goal lead on a shot from Moffat.
The score was unchanged until,
with just two minutes remaining in
the middle period, Greig made a
single handed rush up the ice and pot-
ted the prettiest goal of the game,
unassisted.
Lucan was unable to maintain that
momentum in the early minutes of
the third. As in the first and second
period, Thedford again scored early
when Tony Peters beat Woolford,
making it 4-2.
Lucan rebounded near the half -way
mark of the third when Glen Marshall
scored from Joe Febrey and Dean
Doerr, making it a 4-3 game.
With 1:31 left to play, Revington
pulled Woolford and Irish went on the
attack with a man advantage. Some
Lucan shenanigans in front of the
Thedford goal brought down inciden-
tal minors for Craig and Thedford's
Moffat, but Woolford remained on the
bench and Irish maintained their man
advantage.
But they were unable to score.
"Their goalie came up really big
tonight," Revington said. "He played
really well when he had to."
Revington noted that many of the
team's problems stem from the fact
that there is now a five -man hole in
Lucan's line-up. Veterans Paul
Barnes and Brad Muir are unable to
attend weekday games because of
out-of-town commitments and Scott
Denomy is out with a knee -cap injury.
Junior Football team loses
"Those are three big holes in the
line-up," Revington said. "When
we've got those guys out of the line-
up, it's important that we get
something out of them (the rest of the
sports
team).
Paul Deplancke and Brian Schuyler
were unable to finish Wednesday
nights game due to injuries, adding to
the problem.
Revington noted that he's making
no excuses.
"We're down five guys, but that's
no excuse. They just out -worked us."

just 1:18 had passed in the first when
George Pratt scored from Jeff Reid.

Brussels made signs that they were
still alive in the early portions of the
second period and after 1:38, Paul
Robinson had narrowed Exeter's lead
to two goals,
. With 3:55 left in the period, Terry
Casey found the mark, countering
Robinson's goal and restoring the
three goal lead. Geoff Slater and Dave
Rook assisted on the play.
Casey came up big in the final
period, scoring a short-handed goal
unassisted at 4:28 and effectively
breaking Brussels' spine.
Hawks were presented with a
number of power play opportunities
after Casey's second goal. They
capitalized on three of them.
While Brussels was short-handed,
Jon O'Connor pumped in a shot with
14:06 showing on the clock. Assists on

Gould followed that example, scor-
ing a power play goal at 10:29 from
Pfaff and Pratt.

Mohawk triumph in .Elora
For the first time in the history of
the Exeter Mohawks organization.
the Senior B team went into Elora and
came away with a victory. Until Fri-
day night's 7-3 win over Elora Rocks.
Mohawks have been frustrated in that
town.
Exeter is undefeated in three
regular season games.
Once again it was "the Stratford
line" of Dave Randerson. Quincy
Wilker and Paul Barton which made
the most noise. figuring to some
degree in five of the seven Mohawk
goals scored.
• Jim Guenther, head coach of the
team, said that Elora was fast, but not
nearly as strong as they have been in
other years.
"Their size was smaller than what
we're accustomed to seeing there."
he said.
"We just over -powered them."
The two teams fought to a 1-1 tie in
the first period. but Mohawks held the
edge in the second and third. out-
scoring Elora 6-2. -
The newly formed line of John
Rowland, Rob Mackie and Randy
Bailey- also produced results for
Mohawks, but Guenther expects even
more from the unit.
"They've got lot's of room to work.
I didn't think they played up to their
potential i Friday night but I think
they will."
Guenther doesn't think that a win-
ning streak will do the team harm if
it continues. He admits that the bub-
ble will eventually break, hut he says
the team possesses the character and
chemistry to deal with the fall when
it comes
