Thursday the senior squad travelled to Seaforth and pounded their hosts 29-0, extending their unbeaten streak to four games and finishing off regular season. That win also gave them sole posession of first place in the league. While the rest of the teams in the league battle it out this week, Panthers head coach Ron Bogart will be searching for a worthy opponent for his squad, which has a bye into the semi-finals. He wants to keep them sharp with an exhibition- game. And what about going all the way this season? "I don't like to make predictions like that, but I think we've got a pretty good chance," Bogart says. ki -With a recond like the one Panthers have built up this season, a statement like that isn't what you'd call "going out on a limb". Panthers defensive unit has allowed only three points to be scored against them in regular season and only two teams in the league (Goderich and Stratford Central) have been able to move t the ball inside Exeter s 35 yard line. Add to that a young, well co-ordinated offence, and Bogart could begin to make accurate predictions about next year's team as well. Tied together by quarterback Jerry Lamport, the backfield has had a banner year. Lamport didn't have much experience at the helm of the team enteringinto the season, largely because former quarterback Scott Miller had such j good season last year. Lamport spent most of the 1986 season on the defensive side of things. But this year Miller has moved on and Lamport has taken charge of the field, calling the game wetland communicating with Bogart. The quarterback has had 27 completions in 55 attempts and has allowed only two interceptions over the course of the year. "He's meshed well with the backfield'-- really well," says Bogart. "We've been able to pass more this year than in other 410SSIMMAMM,WOMMEINNINIMIIINNOWNWIENNOIN Sports Spotlight I►. .lark Bisset 10. years because he's been able to set up quickly and pass well." Trevor Ratz, Vern Iskauska, Jeff Denotter, and Tim McCallister are out in front of Lamport, pulling in his passes on a regular basis and Panther's runningbacks are towing the line as well with guys like Dan Weigand, who decided he wanted a piece of runningback glory after playing out his Junior years as a guard. Panthers success has been a pleasant surprise for coach Bogart. Only 17 returned from last season's 36 player roster, leav- ing the team with a small core of veterans. But things fell together early in the year. "They seemed to come together and gel together really quick- ly," Bogart notes. The South Huron Senior squad will play their semi-final game against fourth place Listowel in Exeter October 29 and then, if things go as they should, Panthers will carry their home -field ad- vantage into the final against the winner of the semi-final between Stratford Central and Goderich. Clinton Follies Dateline Clinton - home of the skinniest Junior D hockey players in Ontario. Exeter Hawks had to go there last Friday night and I decided to follow -- not a good decision. Clinton Mustangs are currently fighting for their lives as a team. I was told by a Clinton supporter that the team had only two Junior aged players in their line-up Friday night. The rest, of the team was made up of a smattering of Midgets and, believe it or not, Bantam aged players. It created a difficult situation for Exeter. The referee, obviously sympathetic to Clinton's plight, gave Exeter penalties for two out of every three clean checks along the boards and that helped a bit. When they had a man advantage, Clinton occasionally got the puck into Exeter's end. Thanks to the man in stripes, Hawks played most of the game short-handed. But the ref had to do something. The Clinton fan told me that Mustangs can't attract import players becaue the town is too far north and he explained that most Clinton boys talented enough (or at least big enough) to play Junior D hockey; just aren't interested. They play high school hockey. I'm not knocking the Mustangs that were on the ice Friday night. On the contrary -- they are to be praised. Most of them would be good players in the proper league. After watching some of the David and Goliath scenes unfolding in the corners Friday night, I have to call their efforts heroic. I do question the people who send those players out onto the ice against teams as strong as Exeter Hawks. And I have to wonder how they would justify the team's survival if one of their Peewee sized players was seriously injured in a Junior D sized game. e.aAs .`.§Mx. •. .. ..' .0 :. . °':.. .. $:>.:,:S:s; >Y^: .. e".4«o .;?>>«>: c; ..: zF. <,x .:.ky,S:A• ,.W OVER EASY — Exeter Mohawk Jeff Shipley up -ends a Tavistock • player as John Kernick circles back for the puck.
