[deer Call • J,ack Taylor After 6:00 p.m. 3370471 P The Ontario Provincial Police "Strict is Fair" and R.I.D.E. enforce- mentprograms will continue to be in effect during the Thanksgiving boli - day weekend. The long -weekend has traditional- ly seen a high volume bf traffic on the. proyince's highways • as families 'wither for Thanksgiving festivities or to close down summer cottages for the coming winter. The holiday weekend is also a time when many people drive to the coun- try to enjoy the colours of autumn. During the 1986 Thanksgiving weekend OPP officers investigated 269 collisions in which six people died and 446 were injured. During the 1987 Labour Day weekend the OPP investigated 10 fatal motor vehicle accidents, com- pared to six fatal accidents on the same weekend in 1986. in the first eight months of 1987 (January to August) the number of fatal motore vehicle accidents within OPP jurisdiction rose by 13.3 percent over the same period last year. impaired driving and excessive vehicle speed are still the two most significant contributors to fatal accidents. "Lives can be saved only when everyone drives with caution," said OPP Commissioner Archie Ferguson. "I have instructed my officers to place special emphasis on the "Strict is Fair" and R.1.D.E. programs for this upcoming Thanksgiving weekend." Enjoy a safe and happy Thanksgiv- ing holiday weekend. Drive with care and you will get there. A FAMILY FLOAT Jennifer, Becky, Adorn, Wendy and Kerri-Lynn Case participated in Saturday's Exeter Fair parade. All quiet in Stanley It's quiet here, the quietest it's been in years, according to Clerk Mel Graham of Stanley township. Quiet is not a state that is common- ly associated with municipal politics. Yet in Stanley township business is so slow that a regular.council meeting was cancelled last month. Normally the council members meet twice a month. In August the second meeting was postponed. They met again September 8, and as previously witnessed, the agenda proved to be brief. In council business, further review was given to a request from John Talbot to have part of his farm pro- perty rezoned. No decision was made as council plans to examine the issue more closely with the Huron County Planning Department. Likewise, council chose to further examine a severance request made by Ron Smith. He is seeking to have' property near Bayfield severed. Council discussed whether or not the severance was in an area they wanted to see developed and whether the zon- ing bylaw allowed for development of this property. In other business, council learned that the County of Huron Highway Department plans to repave a section of roadway in Varna. Council has made application to the Ministry of Transportation and Com- inunications for 50 percent funding for the installationof sidewalks along the proposed repaved section of County Road 31. They agreed to make application for the reforestation assistance pro- gram offered by the Ausable-Bayfield Conservation Authority. They have requested 75 spruce trees to be used for roadside planting stock. Approval was given to allow a minor variance for Helen Bieman. Season promises great concerts The 1987-88 youth and music pro- gramme presented by the Grand Bend Concert Association promises to be lively and entertaining this year. and sure to please many musical palates. A variety of musical styles (chambermusic, blues. popular. classical, ragtime, jazz) will be per- formed by accomplished musicians such as Sophie Rolland ( cellist ), Carmen Picard ( pianist ), Claude Webster ( pianist ), members of CATHEDRAL BRASS and the witty and fast-paced.QUATRE FOIS SAX. As usual two bonus concerts are of- fered to season ticketholders: The Stratford Boy Choir, a well-known community choir formed in 1972, and The Bear Show, a potpouri of stories, songs, activities and rhymes with Bob Missen and Gilda Dicola. The concerts will be held at the Grand Bend United Church and The -Bear' Show at Grand Bend Public School. Tickets now on sale! Don't miss this exciting repertoire and call for your season ticket to 238-5507. Budget Rent-A-Car of Exeter (Hensall Motors Ltd.) The variance allows for a change in the side yard limitations to allow for the building of an addition to an existing cottage. While council business has been quiet, it is anticipated that municipal affairs will be running in full gear in the near future when more progress ig made with the water pipeline plan. While the project is still in the hands of the engineers, public meetings are expected to be held in the near future to discuss the extensive work and financing involved in the project that will see drinking water brought from Grand Bend through to Hay and Stanley townships.
