tough decision
Exeter Mohawks have worked
themselves into a difficult position.
After two weeks of training camp, the
club still has roughly ten cuts to make
and most of the players facing cuts
•are of a high calibre.
"I certainly don't envy our
coaching staff," John Pryde, a
Mohawks executive said Monday.
"They've got some very tough deci-
sions to make."
Mohawks are approaching a two
game series with Mooretown this
weekend. Jim Guenther, coach of the
team, expects the final decisions to be
made after the coaching staff has
seen the team play in a game
situation. •
"We're in a position where the ex-
ecutive have gone out and done a good
job of recruiting some excellent
talent," Guenther said.
The head coach said that the club
will ice one of the strongest teams Ex-
eter has ever seen, adding that
Mohawks are hungry and looking for
an Ontario championship. He has no
qualms about making predictions.
"1 feel very strongly that we'll
finish in the top four in the league,,"
he said. "I don't see. why we
wouldn't."
Guenther said that the Surplus of
talent in the Mohawks camp is
representative of the entire league
which has gained strength
dramatically this season with a zone
re -alignment in Waterloo county and
the addition of two new teams, in-
cluding Durham Huskies.
A tougher league means that
Mohawks have to be strong.
"I think the league necessitates that
we have that kind of a team if we are
going to be competitive," Guenther
said.
Rounding out what shouldbe a well
balanced team is the strength Exeter
has inthe net. Rick Pickle and Ran-
dy Hildebrand, who was with Tillson-
burg Titans last season, make the
prospects look good in their own end.
Mooretown, the defending Senior 3
champions, will put the Exeter squad
to the test Friday night in Mooretown
and Sunday night in Exeter at 7:30.
Lucan Irish lose two
Lucan Irish dropped two games on
the weekend in Western Junior D ex-
hibition action, losing 6-1 to Mount
Brydges Friday night and 5-2 to
Brussels Sunday night.
The losses give Lucan an unim-
pressive record of no wins, three
losses and one tie. Head coach Dave
Revington, who noted at the beginn-
ing of the exhibition season that the
club is facing a year of major
reconstruction, said Monday that the
team is weak offensively.
"It (offence) needs some atten-
tion," Revington said. "We're going
to have to do something about that.
Our goal production isn't as good as
it should be." The head coach also
said that the team had only one retur-
ning centreman ( Terry Knowles)
from last year's championship team.
The Irish have been concentrating
on distilling the team into a produc-
tive unit in exhibition play.
"We're trying to make some deci-
sions on who's going to go and who's
going to stay," Revington said.
Goaltending is not a problem accor-
ding -to Revington.
"At this point in time, it's a com-
petition tosee who backs up (Doug)
Haskett," he said.
Mount Brydges and Lucan stayed
close in the first period Friday night
at the Lucan arena, but things soon
turned sour for the home team.
Before two minutes had elapsed in
the game, Lucan jumped into the lead
on a goal by Knowles. That lead didn't
last long. Just over two minutes later,
Mount Brydges John Reaume beat
Lucan goalie Ian Lave to tie the
game. The score remained the same
going into the second.
. Mount Brydges took a two goal lead
early in the second on goals by Mark ,
Smith and Reaume.
Over the course of the second
period, Lave was replaced by Brian
Gregory who went on to stop 30 shots
on goal. Gregory's effort was not
enough, however.

deficit in the second. Barons scored an empty net goal in the last minute of play.
Hawks dealt blows by Barons
Hanover Barons proved to be a lit-
tle too much to handle for Exeter
Hawks this weekend. Hawks lost both
games of a two game exhibition series
against the Junior C team, dropping
a hard-fought 5-3 decision Friday
night in Huron Park and then losing
8-3 Sunday night on foreign ice.
Two players were suspended frop
the team by the officials after SM -
day's game which, according to head
coach Dave Bogart, got rough toward
the end. '
"I thought the ref let it getout of
hand and as a result, the play got a
little chippy." the Junior D coach
explained.
Sunday's suspensions, when added
to the list builf.up over the exhibition
period, could mean Exeter will start
the season missing six regulars. It's
a problem that doesn't phase Bogart.
"All the other teams will be in the
same boat as us," he said. "I'm not
too worried."
Bogart said that the final cuts have
been made and the team now stands
22 players strong. Four forward lines,
-eight defencemen and two goalies
make up the roster. There are some
promising new faces in the line-up, in-
cluding centreman Terry Casey, a
former Mitchell Junior D; Geoff
Slater, a right winger who played with
St. Marys Cement Plant Midgets last
season; Brent Murray. a defenceman
from British Columbia and Clarke
Singer, who played for Mitchell
Junior 'D' and was voted the league's
most valuable player last year.
There will also be some local faces
in the line-up. Jeff Pfaff, Scott Lovie
Jeff Dalrymple, Dave Rook, Scott
Bogart, Jon O'Connor, Steve Gould,
Mark Morrissey and Jim Lewis will
all be wearing the Hawks uniform.
Bogart expects that Exeter will end
•
up in the top four teams in the league
at the end of the season.
"One team goal that I have set --
last year we had 44 team points -- this
year I hope to get 54 in a 42 game
schedule," he said, explaining that a
record like that would put the team in
first or second spot in the division:
• Like the other exhibition games
Hawks have played in the pre -season.
the two game series against Hanover
.allowed the coaching staff to Iodate
the team's weak spots.
"We need work covering guys in
front of our own goal, but it's early
yet," Bogart said. "We've only had
eight practices.
I'm not panicking yet. If we're
making these mistakes after
Christmas, then I'll panic.
"Once we start to gel, I think the
people are going to see some pretty
good Junior D hockey," he added.

Hanover Friday night is any indica-
tion, Bogart is on the right track. The
final score doesn't describe the game
that took place.
Rook, in goal for Exeter throughout
the game, stopped 47 shots on goal.
Three of the five goals Hanover
scored were pumped in during power
plays. Another was an empty net
goal.
• Hanover took a two goal lead in the
first period, but Singer scored at 13:43
to keep Hawks close. Assists went to
Casey and Murray.
Barons managed to put one more
puck in the net with just 30 seconds re-
maining in the first.
The two teams played out the se-
cond period without a change in the
score until 11:28 when Barons made
it 4-1. With just over one minute re-
