Six soccer teams participate in playoffs
It was a very successful weekend of
soccer for the Exeter club. Six teams
participated in the playoffs in four dif-
ferent age groups in four different
towns.
The atoms travelled to St. Colum -
ban to participate in the Atom tour-
nament. Exeter I participated in the
A group and Exeter II in the B group.
Exeter I in the A group took an ear-
ly lead in their game against
Bryanston. Bryanston staged a com-
eback later in the game but Exeter
scored again to put the game out of
reach.
Chris Jongkind played well for
Exeter.
Scoring for Exeter in the 6-3 win
were Marty Debruyn (2), Chris
McDonald (2), Brent Urlin and Luke
Sims.
After their win, Exeter I received
a bye into the A final against league
winner St. Columban, a team that did
not lose a point throughout the season.
Led by the stellar goaltending of
Matt Glavin and excellent play by
Chris McDonald and Brian
McAllister, Exeter I took an early
lead on a goal by Chris McDonald and
had several chances to go up by more
than one.
In the end, the one goal had proved
to be too low as St. Columban scored
two goals to wrestle the win out of the
hands of Exeter. This game capped
a very successful season for the Ex-
eter kids with a second place in the
Playoffs and a second place during
the season.
In the B group, Exeter II came up
with a good effort defeating Col-
dstream by a 3-2 score to reach the
semi-finals.
Ilderton had a bye in the first round
and was fresh when they started the
game against Exeter I1. It proved to
be the difference. Ilderton defeated
Exeter by a 3-2 score.
Chad Gilfillan and Paul Vandyken
played an excellent tournament for
Exeter. Goals for Exeter II were
scored by Geoff and Bryce Hann and
Jeff Sararas.
In girls under 11 action, Exeter
travelled to Mount Brydges for their
first game against Strathroy. The Ex-
eter girls played as well as they could
and put forward a good effort but it
was not good enough to win. Strathroy
sent the girls home with a 2-0 loss.
It has been a tough season for the
girls team and the soccer executive
will try to address some of the pro-
blems that arose this year in the
future.
The Peewee division held their
playoffs in Parkhill on the West
Williams field. It turned into quite a
LONG LIST OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS — These young soccer players have a great season under their
belts. They make up Exeter 1, a squad which went undefeated during regular season, won their league
championship and captured the title of the recent St. Columbali Mosquito tournament. Back row, left;

tournament for both Exeter teams. In
the first game Exeter I and II were
paired off against each other.
Throughout the season these two
teams have played close games and
this one was no exception. Both teams
played well but could not capitalize on
their chances until Sisavay
Sengkhowunany scored directly from
a corner kick to give Exeter II a 1-0
lead.
That was all Exeter II needed. Jean
Pfaff played well in goal, nullifying
any chances Exeter I had to tie the
game.
The loss put Exeter I in the B
semifinal and Exeter II received a
bye in the A final. Exeter I played an
excellent game against Lucan in the
B semifinal. The Lucan team was
very stubborn however, and with 10
minutes left the game was tied atj-1.
Ryas then that things started to work
far Exeter I as they scored four goals
in those last ten minutes for a 5-1 win
and a spot in the B final against
Bryanston.
Scoring for Exeter 1 were Nicky
Szabo( 2), Ryan Hern(1), Brad
Thompson(1) and Shawn McFalls(1).
The B Final was an exciting affair.
In the first minute of play Shawn
McFalls first hit the goal post and
then scored moments later to give Ex-
eter I a 1-0 lead.
Bryanston fought back however
and scored two unanswered goals to
take a 2-1 lead.
Ryan Hern scored late in the game
to send it into overtime.
After a scoreless overtime, penal-
ty shots had to decide the game.
Bryanston proved to be the better one
of the two in that department and
went home with the B trophy.
The A final between Exeter II and
Grand Bend turned out to be an even
more exciting affair. Sisavay
Sengkhounmany, Brett Rideout,
Shane Pfaff and Sharon Debruyn
played outstanding games defensive-
ly as Exeter II held a very strong
Grand Bend team to a 0-0 draw
through regulation time and through
overtime. It was not until the ninth
penalty shot that Grand Bend decid-
ed the game in their favour.
The Exeter Bantam boys and girls
travelled to Delaware for their
playoff in the annual challenge cup.
Last year the Bantams showed
character in coming from sixth place
during the season to the A final los-
ing 1-0 to Delcobridge.
This year the Bantams ended up in
third place during the season and
again they reached the A final sen-
ding Lambeth home with a 4-0 loss.
The Exeter boys and girls were wor-
thy of their win.
Scoring for Exeter were Sivixay
Sengkhounmany, Henri Debruyn,
Tim VanDam and Chris Chanyi.
In the A final Exeter -came up
against a team from Wallacetown
that had beaten them twice during
regular season and only lost one point
throughout the year. That impressive
record had little effect on the Exeter
youngsters as they played the game
of their lives.
Throughout the game Exeter mat-
ched Wallacetown man for man. Late
in the game Exeter got the one chance
they had been waiting for and Chris
Chanyi turned into a hero. He made
no mistake converting the chance in-
to a goal. Exeter hung on for the
balance of the game and to the delight
of their parents and coach, won by a
1-0 score.
The only function left for the 1987
soccer season is the annual windup
and awards ceremony at the rec
centre.
