Express swept ovaof final, series
fifth but was left stranded on base.
Strathroy scored the tying run in
the fourth inning. They pushed the
winning run' across the plate in the
final inning of the game.
Bruijns was again Exeter's undoing
in the final gameof the series Sunday
afternoon. He struck out nine Exeter
players, three in a row in the seventh
inning, and gave up just two singles.
Brian Horner pitched the final
game for Express, putting forth an ef-
fort that, under different cir-
cumstances might have won the
game. Horner allowed five hits and
struck out two batters:
The combination of a single and a
double in the top of the fourth allow-
ed Strathroy to scorewhat turned out
to be the winning run.
The same combination in the fifth
inning gave Strathroy two more runs
and the season was effectively over
for Exeter Express.
Joe Fulop, manager of the Exeter
team, said Tuesday that the games
were decided on talent and not by ex-
tenuating circumstances. He said
Strathroy out -played Exeter and that
they deserved to win.
Exeter found their way into the
finals after emerging victorious from
a round:robin series with Seaforth
and Walkerton.
The 1987 season is just a memory
for Exeter Express, but the memories,
are good. Express were beaten in
three straight games in the Great
Lakes League championship final
series after they dropped a double-
header to Strathroy Tigers 'Sunday
afternoon. The scores however, tell
the tale of three -hard fought games of
high calibre baseball.
Only eight runs were scored over
the course of the series.
Exeter lost game one in Strathroy
2-0 after darkness brought on an ear -
ly finish.
Paul Gilmour went the distance on
the mound for Express. He turned in
an admirable performance, striking
out three batters and allowing only
four hits. Unfortunately„the Exeter
•
offence couldn't come up with
anything at bat to support Gilmour on
the mound. It wasn't until the last in-
ning of the game that Exeter manag-
ed to get a hit. Dave Bogart singled
and then stole second before Kevin
Drager was struck out to end the
game.
Exeter scored their only run of the
series in the first of two games Sun-
day, but lost at the hands of Strathroy
pitcher John Bruijns - formerly of the
Exeter Express. Bruijns kept Exeter
pinned down at the plate, throwing 10
strike -outs and allowing just three
hits over the course of the game.

END OF THE LINE -- Don MacDonald of Exeter Express rounds third
base in an attempt to get home during the first game of a double
header against Strathroy Sunday afternoon. MacDonald didn't make
it and neither did Exeter. They were eliminated from the playoffs

Third period lapses cost Exeter Hawks two games
Exeter Hawks continued to make
adjustments in their line-up this week
when they dropped two games in
Western Junior D exhibition play.
Hawks came out on the losing side of
a 7.5 score against Lambeth in Huron
Park Friday night and were blanked
2-0 by Mount Brydges Sunday.
After leading 5-4 going into the third
period Friday night, hawks fell back
and allowed three unanswered goals
to be scored, all during three -on -three
or four -on -four situations.
Dave Bogart, head coach of the
Hawks, said after the game the ex-
hibition performances are il-
luminating areas that need work.
"That's two games in a row now
we've had lapses in the third period
that have cost us, so I guess that's
something we're going to have to
work on,” Bogart said. "I think that
once the guys get to know each other.
we'll be better off."
Asked about the teams' perfor-
mance during three -on -three situa-
tions, Bogart said he didn't see any
unsolvable problems.
"We play a lot of three -on -three's
and four -on -fours in practice, but oh-
viously we need more work on that.
That's one thing that exhibition
games bring cut is the weaknesses,"
he. said. "Hopefully, with some prac-
tice, we can strengthen that."
Bogart noted•that Hawks' defensive
play needs attention. "One thing we
have to work on is playing our defen-
sive end," he said. "Too many guys
are running around and we've gol to
work on that."
Terry Casey started things off for
Exeter after three minutes of play in
the first period when he connected
with Scott Bogart and Scott Lovie to
score.
Lambeth tied the game after 7:55
of play on a goal by Paul Zadorsky but
Exeter re -took the lead when Jim
Lewis scored with just over five
minutes remaining in the first. Tom
McAnn and Jeff Kints assisted on the
play.
Lt looked as though Hawks would
carry the lead into the second period.
but with just one second showing on
the clock, Lambeth's Zadorsky beat
goalie Date Rook to tie the game 2-2.
Jim Dickens put Exeter back in the
driver's seat with a goal near the
halfway mark of the second from Jeff
Slater and McAnn. but Zadorsky
pumped in his third goal of the game
shortly after. •
Slater and Dickens combined again
after 16:37 had elapsed, making the
score 4-3. Lambeth retaliated
however, and the -game was tied at
four. .
With just two seconds remaining in
the period. Lovie scored unassisted
and Exeter again led the way into the
next period.
Lambeth took advantage of the ex-
tra space on the ice in the third, scor-
ing three unanswered goals and win-
ning the game 7-5.
Mount Brydges 2 Exeter 0
After battling their way through a
scoreless first period. Hawks allow-
ed Mount Brydges to score just one
' minute into the second. and take a 1-0
lead. That turned out to be the winn-
ing goal.
While Hawks enjoyed.a man advan-
tage near the mid -way mark of q1e se-
cond. Mount Brydges managed to get
control of the puck and score a short-
handed -goal when John Reaume fed
the puck to Jeff Knap.
That effectively ended the game for
Exeter. They passed through the re-
mainder of the second and the entire
third period unable to make a mark
on the hoard.

tacular save during an exhibition game against Lambeth Friday night.
Hawks lost the game 7-5.

in game one of the Exeter-Lucan
series Irish trailed 2-1 in the bottom
of the eighth but managed to score
