The baits are not harmful.to pets or
livestock. If a pet should eat a bait,
it does not necessarily become im-
munized against rabies and it should
be vaccinated as usual by a
veterinarian.

Glenelg and Normanby.
Baits, contained in clear or green
plastic bags, will be air -dropped in

What the bait looks like
The bait consists of a cube 3',2. x
x 1'2 cm) of beef fat, mineral oil and
hardened wax. It is a khaki green col-
ou,r and has an artificial chicken
scent. Attached to it is a green label
With the inscription: "Fox Rabies
Vaccine - Do Not Disturb".
Baits also contain tetracycline to
mark foxes teeth as evidence that
baits were eaten.
Approximately 13,000 baits will con-
tain vaccine fluid which is in a small dropped.
plastic package that is competely in-
serted into the bait.
. Approximately another 21,000 baits
will not contain vaccine. These will be
used to determine the acceptance of
the bait by foxes as shown by the
presence of tetracycline in the teeth.
Some baits will also be wrapped in
clear or green polyethylene bags;
these have a red label attached, with-
► similar explanation about the
contt'nts.
What happens after the bait drop
In some test sites, teams of resear-

The researchers will study the con-
dition of the baits and the animals
reaction to them.
From early October through
November, trappers will be asked to
collect specitnens from the ex=
perimental sites. Research will focus
on red fox, stiped skunk, racoon and
coyote. Samples will be tested to
determine if animals took the bait and
became immunized, as shown by the
presence of antibodies.
Researchers will also survey the
different types of habitat within the
baited areas.
Why MNR is involved in this research
The agricultural lands of southern
Ontario cover an area of 98,000 square
kilometres. More rabid animals are
reported in this area, than in any
other province or state in North
America.
In 1986, a record 4,212 Ontarians
were treated with rabies vaccine and
serum because of exposure to rabid
animals.
Red foxes and striped skunks ac-
count for 97 percent of rabid wildlife,
and 64 percent of all animal rabies
cases, in Ontario.
Since 1985, MNR has conducted
field trials that test ways of immuniz-
ing wild animals using vaccine -
carrying baits dropped by air.
Many years of research preceded
these recent studies.
The field trials to date are not an al -
tempt to control the spread of rabies
in wildlife. They are strictly ex-
perimental but should eventually lead
to large-scale vaccinations in the
wild. The 1987 bait drop program will
evaluate the latest modifications to
the bait/vaccine system that have
been developed over the previous
three years.
