New store draws complaint The new Hensall liquor store has barely been open for two weeks and already it has drawn its first complaint. In an anonymous phone call to the Times -Advocate a Hensall citizen complained about the store's new sign on Highway 4. The caller objected to the sign being in French. A visit to the liquor store confirm- ed that while the sign does indeed an- nounce the store's presence in French, it does so in English as well. "Anybody can see there's English on that sign," challenged part-time li- quor store employee Nancy Smith in defense of the bilingual sign. She went on to explain that the new sign is now standard issue for all new liquor stores and not only incorporates the province's new initiative for bil- ingulaism, but also includes the new colours and the new logo for the liquor control board. • The new logo is styled to resemble an open case of bottles as viewed from above; and the flaps of the box point in all four directions to sym- bolize the origins of the store's pro- ducts from all corners of the globe. Jim Leal, regional director with the liquor control board in London, con- firmed that the new sign, reading "Li- quor Store - Vins et Spiritueux", is part of a province -wide three-year program to change all liquor store signs and, naturally, all new stores get the new signs right away. "In designated areas we have to provide services in French too," add- ed Leal, but noted this was un- necessary for Hensall. However, he did point out that the Highway 4 location of the Hensall store made the bilingual sign ideal for attracting highway travellers. When asked about the complaint, Leal surmised that the complainant represented only a very small portion of the population. In fact, he was sur- prised that such an opinion would be voiced from this area because he had always assumed there was a solid French-Canadian background in the region. IT'S NEW — The sign for the new Hensall Liquor Store is bilingual. The board will change all signs within three years, providing nobod else com.lains. "We have provided them with the service," Leal stated in regard to the requests for the liquor store in Hen- sall, but he cautioned "if they support it, it will stay. If not, we'll take it out of there." - MPP lack Riddell's office also received the complaint about the sign from an anonymous caller. "One language is good enough for Ontario," said the caller, who claim= ed to have travelled in Quebec where the liquor store signs are not bilingual. Nan Thomson, a spokesperson for Jack Riddell, asked him about the complaint. His reply wa,s, that the bil- ingual signs are part of a`Liquor Con- trol Board policy and are not related to any provincial programs or legisla- tion, including Bill 8. and district news Susan Hartman 262-2449 YARD SALE -- Bill Forrest (left) of the First Hensall Venturers helps Gloria Johnston of Thedford find the perfect book at the Venturers' yard and bake sale.
