In 1986, there were 4.5 million families with children."Moreover, four out of five of these families were the "traditional" husband-wife- child(ren) families. Although lone -parent families are considerably fewer in numb- jer than these traditional families, they have been increas- ing at a much faster rate. Bet- ween 1981 and 1986, there was a 20 percent increase in their numbers. In 1986, they represented 13 percent of all families, up from 11 percent in 1981. While the majority, (80 per- cent) of lone -parent families were headed by women, there has been a slightly more rapid in- crease in the number of male lone -parents. Between 1981 and 1986, lone -parent families headed by men increased by 22 percent, following a. 31 percent increase between 1976 and 1981. This com- pares to increases of 19 percent during 1981-86 and 27 percent dur- ing 1976-1981 for lone -parent families headed by women. There were 1.3 million husband -wife families and 175,485 lone -parent families with children under six years of age in 1986. Together, these families with young children made up 22 per- cent of all families in Canada. While the growth in the preschool population has been slow, a continuing increase in the participation of young mothers in the labour force may see the cur- rent demand for day care' facilities maintained. Labour force data from the 1986 Census will enable trends in the work patterns of young mothers to be analyzed further. More and more Canadians are living as husband and wife out- side the bounds of formal mar- riage. Since 1981, there has been a 38 percent increase in the number of reported common-law unions. In 1986, 8 percent of all couples, about 487,000, families, reported that their union was common-law. In 1981, 6 percent of all couples, or about 352,000 reported living in such unions. There were fairly wide regional variations in the incidence of such unions. The highest propor- tions of common-law couples were to be found in the Yukon (20 percent) and the Northwest Ter- ritories.( 17 er- ritories.(17 percent) . Among the provinces, 13 percent of couples in Quebec were living common- law, while in Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island, less than 5 percent of all couples were not formally married. Close to 2.7 million people in Canada were 65 years of age and over in 1986. Of these, 91 percent were living in private households while 9 percent lived in nursing homes and other institutions. A full 25 percent of the elderly liv- ed alone. Rally Sunday held By Mrs. TOM KOOY Rally Sunday was held at the United Church on Sunday September 13 with a good crowd out.
