Maybe you're one of those people who need a second or third morning coffee just to wake up. Do you automatically reach for the salt shaker as soon as food is set in front of you? Well there's nothing too unusual in any of these situations. Taken by themselves, they sound kind of harmless. But problems cqn arise when we overindulge or abuse these substances with consequences rang- ing from minor health disturbances tc physical or psychological dependence. These are the innocent addictions. Sugar: If you have a tendency to consume large quantities of high calorie foods such as sugary sweets, you may be a "junk food junkie". All' sugars are carbohydrates, but unlike most carbohydrate foods which pro- vide important nutrients, sugar pro- , vides little more than calories. Do yourself a big favour by cutting down on the amount of sugar consumed ini your daily diet. Read food labels. Names like dex-: trose, sucrose, fructose, lactose, corn!, syrup, molasses, or honey indicate that sugar is present in that product. Processed foods usually contain generous amounts of sugar. Reach for fresh fruit rather than sugary cakes or cookies as a dessert. You can lose weight and feel healthier by restric- ting your dietary sugar intake. Salt: Salt ranks second only to sugar as the additive most common- ly found in processed foods. Do you "taste before you shake" or do you automatically sprinkle salt on your food? Canadians are being encourag- ed to "kick the salt habit" and get to know the real taste of food. A certain amount of dietary salt is necessary for good health, but all requirements can be met by eating natural foods - especially certain vegetables and dairy products. Eating an excess amount of "junk foods" such as chips or pretzels along with other salty foods like pickles, sal- ty french fries and processed meats can put your salt intake into the high risk zone. Excessive salt intake has been linked to the development of high blood pressure. Reduce your dietary salt intake by limiting the amount of cured and processed meats eaten, restrict your useage or cann- ed soups, relishes, pickles, etc., and reduce the amount of fast foods eaten Addictive foods as they contain megadoses of sodium! By simply reducing the amount of salt consumed daily, yo6,..o4n con- tribute to a more positive personal health status. Caffeine: That morning coffee is Canada's eye opener because it pro- vides caffeine... a socially accepted stimulant drug that can be physical- ly and psychologically addicting. Caf- feine is also found in tea, cola drinks, chocolate, and cocoa. An average dose of 100 milligrams of caffeine (equal to one five ounce cup of coffee) is enough to provide that pleasant "life" many of us depend on. However, large doses of caffeine can cause a variety of unpleasant side effects. Doses larger than 240 milligrams, or about 3 cups of coffee, can lead to increased alertness and sleeplessness, an increased pulse rate and blood pressure, and, in some -peo- ple, an irregular heart beat. People deprived of their normal caffeine in- take can actually suffer physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms such as, headache, nerV6'usness .or irritability. -- Try to reduce you daily consump- tion of caffeine by using diet gingerale, sprite, or 7 -up instead of • Usborne & Hibbert Mutual Fire Insurance Company Exeter, Ontario NOM ISO (Established in 1876) Provides Full Insurance Coverage for Town Dwellings as well as Farm Properties DIRECTORS 8 ADJUSTERS Jack Harrigan RR 3 LuSan 227.4305 Robert Gardner RR 2 Staff() 345.2739 Lloyd Morrison RR 1 St. Marys 229.8277 Lorne Feeney RR 2 Dublin 345.2543 Jack Hodgert RR 1 Kirkton 229-6152 Joseph Cheffe RR 5 Mitchell 348-9705 AGENTS Ross Hodgert Woodham John Moore Dublin Joseph Uniac Mitchell 229.4643 345.2512 348-9012 A refund from surplus wos declared for all policyholders who qualify, are on record and are in good standing as at December 31, 1986. cola soft drinks or by substituting fruit juice, milk, or decaffeinated cof- fee in place of regular coffee or tea.
