-- "All I know is that it was a big dif -
lerence in my career. I went from be-
ing an average player just trying to
get as much ice -time as 1 could, to a
40 and 50 goal scorer after 1 went to
Huron".
-- Al Secord, player, Chicago
Blackhawks
"The leading development school
for all ages in North American, plus
a clinic for myself as an NHL coach."
Ted Sator, head coach, Buffalo
Sabres
If it sounds like these quotes came
from an advertising flyer, well, they
did. They are comments printed in
Huron Hockey School's summer
hockey program brochure, but they
express better than anything.else, the
faith and zeal that the Huron Hockey
school in pires in those who are in-
volved with it. •
The school operates out of Huron
Park, and if you happened to be loiter-
ing around the front door of the
Stephen township arena last week,
you might have run into Detroit Red
Wings' playoff star Bob Probert or
Vancouver Canucks' Jim Sandlak.
They were there for the last week of
school which is dedicated to players
who have been invited to an NHL
training camp or play for an NHL
team.
Called 'Pro Week', it caps a sum-
mer of intensive hockey, training for
hockey students of all ages.
Bill McPhail. promotions director
for the school, shares the zeal that
seems to be common -place at Huron
Hockey school.
"We think that we offer, withoutoa
doubt. the finest hockey instruction in
the world," McPhail says.
Students who attend the school are
treated to the expert instruction of
university educated teachers with ex-
tensive hockey backgrounds -- in
other words, they know hockey and -
have the skills to communicate what
they knoW.
Since the school began, it has listed
in its ranks, more than 200 players
who have played. or are now playing
hockey in the NHL.
Backed up by a complete condition-
ing and recreation program. students
practice skating in the morning Their
performance is recorded on video
tape and critiqued in the afternoon.
Later in the day, 'they work on
puck/slick skills. •
The players are involved in two
scrimmages a week, the second one
being an all-star game for each divi-
sion. put on for the benefit of parents
who can come in and watch their
children play.
Carrying a staff of 40-50 employees
a week. the school is able to provide
excellent supervision and instruction.
"All the kids are monitored all the
time," McPhail says. "We know
where every kid is every minute of
the day."
That program draws students from
Sweden, Holland, California and even
Japan. McPhail explains that a con-
tact in Osaka sends at least two
Japanese students to the school every
year. The Japanese connection came
about after the contact attended the
school while living in Toronto.
It becomes obvious_ that Huron
Hockey school is a far-reaching
organization. McPhail confirms that.
The -school. which has to locations,
(seven of them in Ontario) instructs
roughly 1.800 students each summer.
Since its conception. Huron Park
has been the cog in the wheel.
"We think. for the facilities they
( Huron Park) have to offer. it's one
of the finest areas around," McPhail
says.
• "For over 16 years, we have been
so will received in the area that we
don't want to leave."
McPhail notes that Huron Park has
everything the school requires in a
compact, confined area. Because co-
founder Ron Mason, head coach of
Michigan State's varsity hockey
team, was originally from the area,
he was -aware of the facilities
available at Huron Park. The school
settled there, meshing well with the
community'.
"This has been, and always will be.
the flagship of the Huron Hockey
school," McPhail says
The school accepts players nine
years -of -age and older The progra►n
ends Labour Day weekend, but those
interested in attending next season
can call the school's administrative
office, 46l3) 933-2,582,, in Cornwall.

Public Meeting
ONCERNING A PROPOSED OFFICIAL PLAN AMENDMENT
AFFECTING THE TOWNSHIP OF STEPHEN
TAKE NOTICE that the Council of the Corporation of the County
of Huron will hold a public meeting,on Thursday, October 8,
1987, at 8:00 p.m. • at the Dashwood Community Centre in
Dashwood to consider a proposed Official Plan Amendment
under Section 34 of the Planning Act. 1983.
The proposed Official Plan Amendment would charge the
designation on Part Lot 24, North Boundary Concession (in-
cluding lots 3-7; 10-14; 17-26; 34-43 and 49-60) Registered Plan
224 from Residential to Restricted Agriculture.
• The result of the application would be to eliminate the subject
lands from an urban designation. The lands under this urban
designation. although currently vacant, place restrictions on the
owners livestock barns located on Lot 25, North Boundary Con-
cession. By placing these lands into an agricultural designation.
the restrictions placed on expansion to existing livestock
buildings will reflect the actual built up area of Dashwood. This
increased separation will place the barns on Lot 25, North Boun-
dary Concession in a more favourable position with respect to
expansion.
ANY PERSON may attend the public meeting and or make writ-
ten or verbal representation either in support of or in opposi-
tion to the proposed Official Plan Amendment.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION relating to the proposed Official
Plan Amendment is available for inspection between 8:30 a.m.
and 4:30 p.m. at the Municipal Office and at the County of Huron
Planning and Development Deportment, Court House,
