Tiliers don't deserve
their bad reputation
Farmers know their corn hybrids.
The companies have started signing
their plots thready, and neighbours
will soon be studying new hybrids.
Most are content to observe the corn
growth and wait for the harvest
results - yield, standability and
maturity. Some farmers want more
specifics - such as protein content.
susceptibility to herbicides, ear mold.
soil compaction or even response to
nitrogen. i was amused last week
when a group of farmers were rating
a particular hybrid as being 'bad' for
tillers.
i was amused because I've heard
many farmers discuss this and
because i had recently read an arti-
cle revealing the facts on the tittering
phenomenon.
Tillers are later -al branches. if they
develop at below ground nodes they
become tillers. if they develop al
above ground nodes, they become ear
shoots. Tillers are stimulated to
develop by early season growing con-
ditions. if there is more than suffi-
cient soil fertility and moisture, then
tittering is greater. We may find This
where there are low populations.
skips in rows or at the end of rows,
and some hybrids do tend to tiller
more than others.
Although tillers are unsightly ( like
horns are to a polled cattle breeder ),
the real question is, "what effect do
they have on yield?". Wisconsin
researchers studied this mystery and
found: -
1) little movement of food between the
main plant and tiller prior to
tasseling.
2) during grain fill, substantial
amounts of food moved from large
earless tillers to the ear of the main
plant
31 there was little food movement
when ears were on tooth tiller and
main plant.
1 t the only time food moved from the•
main plant to the ear on the tiller was
after the ear was removed from the
main plant. •
So, 'small, shaded,- earless tillers
that develop under a full stand have
little effect on the -main plant. If
anything. they may increase yield.
'fillers may also help increase yield
if populations are low, by helping to
feed the main plan( or by grain pro-
duction on theit own ears. But, if the
weather turns dry after stimulating
a lot of tittering early in the season,
the tillers (which also use water in
transpiration) will deplete the water
supply quicker. in this case, drought
symptoms and yield loss will occur
sooner in stands with excessive
tittering.
So. if a hybrid has demonstrated
high yields and good standability in
the past. do not discount it heavily for
tittering. Instead. check your plant
population and uniformity of plant
distribution. since these could be
more responsible for tittering than the
hybrid itself. And lastly, do not waste
your time removing tillers from the
main plant. 'filler removal never in-
creases yields and usually reduces
yields. By: John Heard, Soil.
