Lucan OBA Finals The final games of the Lucan OBA qualifying tournament were played last weekend (August 15► in the Tyke and Peewee divisions after being cancelled on the actual weekend of the tourney due to rain. In the Peewee division. Dashwood dropped a close 7-6 loss to Lucan in the semi-final and then beat them 12-7 in the final to advance to the Ontario E championships which will be held September 5-6 in Flesherton. . Winning pitcher in that contest was Dashwood's Shawn Gillespie. who pit- ched four innings on relief. Lucan lost control of the game in the fourth inning when the Dashwood Peewees scored.eight runs off of the pitching of three different hurlers. .The semi-final game between the two teams had a more dramatic note. A pinch hit single by Derek Greenlee in the sixth inning brought in two runs for Lucan and tied the game 6-6. Then, in the bottom of the seventh. Shane Gillan drove in the winning run with a single to make the score 7-6 in Lucan's favour. • - In the Tyke division, Lucan edged out Flesherton narrowly. by a score of 10-9. Brian Maslin went six complete in- nings for Lucan. 'allowing 11 hits. striking out six and walking one. Maslin was relieved by Mat Munro with none out and two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh. Munro handled the situation and delivered his team to victory. Rich Zeigler took the loss for Flesherton despite an admirable per- formance which included 13 'strike , outs and three walks. The win allows Lucan to advance to the OBA Tyke E championships in Cambellville, September 5-6. Ladies slo-p Exeter ladies slo-pilch is quickly movitig toward their playoff tourna- ment to he held September 11 and 12 with only two games lett in the second half schedule. Standings remain close in both the A and B divisions with Downtown Dollies and Good Times holding down first place at this time respectively. Winning teams in the August 13 games were Downtown Mires. Albatross Angels and SIM on the A side and Good Times, Huron Park Devils and Electro -Liles on the B side. Victors August'20 were Downtown Collies. Big '0' Sockettes. The hospital squad swept the series winning four straight games t� claim the title. In their first match -up, they met Bellmore Fumbiebees and won 13-10. SIIH then played Beaters and came out on top,by a score of 12-2. The team faced Huron Park Devils in their third game of the»series and shut them out 15-0. SIIH managed a shut -out in• the final game as well, blanking Cargill 7-0. Basketball Exeter Slamming Turtles showed that they had the character to match . their name at Hanover when they captured the men's basketball title at Sportsfest. Turtles beat Kincardine Tunas 53-48 in the final game to win the championship. Steve Merner, a player on the team. said that the Turtles couldn't pick an MVP because the win was a team effort. "Everybody - played well. Evelybody figured into the scoring of the game so we figured it was an all - Bully Gully Yamaha and CRC pro- ductions will host the first of four snowmobile events scheduled for this year August 30. A water skimming competition will be held during intermission Sunday afternoon- at approximately 3 p.m. Competitors will have to travel the 50 yard distance across a body of water" on their snowmobiles. -The racing begins at 12 noon Sun- day August 20 at Bully Gully, Varna. • Meat Plan evaluated The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food has scheduled a mid-term evaluation of the Red Meat Plan to study the program's effectiveness in boosting the efficiency of the beef and sheep industries in the province. The Price Waterhouse manage- ment consulting firm .is doing the evaluation which will be completed by the fall. . The Red Meat Plan is a five-year program to improve the quality and productivity of the beef and sheep in- dustries in Ontario. It is scheduled to end March 31. 1989. Consultants will study the cow -calf. stocker/slaughter and sheep develop- ment components of the plan, the Rural Agricultural Enterprises Cen- tres, research projects. northern in- itiatives. marketing »initiatives and the program adminstration. Some producers enrolled in the Red Meat Plan will be .contacted for a telephone survey.
