I've seen their pictures, so i knoW for a fact that 1 can't wax poetic about their legs. . Hifi the Flirt, Iledda Hooker, Lotta Fanny, Leapin Lena and Madam Hilda -- that's the roster. Together they form a five man team billed at the 'world's funniest softball team'. They will be coming up against Exeter Royals August 30 at 7:30 p.m. here in town. Madam Hilda, who dresses up as Trim Palacios when he's not playing ball, is the ring leader of the California Cuties. Palacios vas with the first Cuties squad when they performed in the South Pacific in 1946 for American service men stationed in Guam. Ile must have enjoyed it, because he turned -it into a career. Now 68, Palacios provides the commentary for the game, occasionally step- ping in to throw a few balls across the plate. The Cuties have been touring for More than 40 years now, with Palacios at the helm. Judging by the photos they sent, they're still working in their original costumes. - Just five, you ask'? flow can they field a team with just five ... people? Skill is the operative word. Ron Rupp, who performs as Fifi the Flirt, takes the pitching responsibilities for the group. With a fast ball that has been clock- ed at 98 miles per hour, he should keep the Royals bats relatively quiet. Cuties catcher Leapin Lena is a 6'5" monster who knocked out 25 home runs in 1986 and Hedda Hooker, the team's short-stop, is capable of "running the hundred in under 10 seconds". (Being American, they didn't bother to mention whether that was 100 yards, 100 metres or 100 feet.) Nobody seems to know much about first baseman Lotta Fan- ny, but 1 think it's safe to assume that, with a name like that, she will cover her position. With that combination on the field, the Cuties recorded an 1986 record of 102 wins and eight Iosses. The price of admission is $4 for adults and $2 for children. Pro - ceeds from the gate will go to the washroom Vroject at the Rec Centre. It's a mistake Last week the Times -Advocate ran a feature in the sports sec- tion about sport parachuting at Grand Bend. The story featured a prominent picture of local sky diver Deb Zawadsky jumping out of a plane. Underneath the picture was a little label which read `T -A photo'. That wasn't supposed to be there. All week long I had been making jokes about that picture. So- meone would ask: "Did you take that?" and I would say smugg- ly, something like this: 'Ya, sure I took it. You can't imagine how tough it was to hang onto the strut of that wing with one hand and balance my camera with the other." Then I'd swagger off like Mark the Adventurer. Of course, I always explained that it was just a joke and that I was really a coward at heart. On Wednesday morning I saw the dreaded 'T -A photo.' At the risk of killing Mark the Adventurer for all time, I have to say that it's not my picture. I believe it was taken by a stationary camera on the wing of the plane, but if not, at the very least, the photographer was wearing a parachute. I did shoot two or three rolls of film for that feature -- but with my feet planted firmly on the ground. ....';.i. .. _::. .. ti'.i m,P.f '2'.'.,u...
