ROCKETING TO FIRST — A member of the Hensall Rockets gives it a good try but is unsuccessful in
beating the throw to first base. That was Rocket's story throughout the 'B' final of the Greys/Devils
tourhey on the weekend. Chiselhurst won the game 9-5.
Exeter Greys/Devils tournament
Door Nobs, WiId Cats top tourney
The Exeter Greys/Devils annual
slo-pitch tournament went without a
hitch on the weekend, helped along by
a dose of reasonably good weather
and a well-run schedule.
The three day tourney drew 22
men's and ladies' slo-pitch teams
from the area.
In the ladies division, the 'A' and 'B'
titles were taken by out-of-town
teams. The 'C' title went to Downtown
Dollies.
Seaforth had a corner on the 'A'
division when Seaforth Sluggers met
the Wildcats, from the same town.
Wildcats trounced their opponents
25-8 to win the title.
The 'B' division was dominated by
Goderich oldtiniers, a squad that has
maintained roughly the same players
for almost .20 years. Goderich was
able to bring that experience to bear
against Brinsley in the 'B' final. They
handed Brinsley a 19-2 loss.
Brinsfey made their way into the
final after beating Dan Brie 33-2
Saturday afternoon. That gave them
a bye into the B' final. -
Downtown Dollies carne up on the
winning side Sunday afternoon in;a
close match -up with Biddulph for the
'C' title. Dollies pulled out a 9-5 vic-
tory to claim the honour.
After suffering two losses; Dollies
picked up an 11-6 win over Crediton
Saturday morning and then received
a bye into the 'C' final.
Biddulph was forced to play Inn-
dianettes Sunday morning and" -
though they won that game 4-1, they
had less than two hours to rest before
launching into the final against the
Dollies.
Dashwood Industries Door Nobs
went undefeated into the 'A' cham-
pionship, as did Art's Boys, but the
Door Nobs came out on top, winning
the final narrowly Sunday afternoon
by a score of 5-3; -
Door Nobs started that journey to
the final Saturday afternoon when
they beat Rockets in a high scoring
game that was decided by one run.
The final score was 15-14. They went
on to end the tourney for Inn-dians,
beating them 14-5. That win put them
in the final against Art's Boys.
After losing the first game of the
tourney to Door Nobs, Rockets beat
Goulds 19-5 in the 'B' division and then
took a bye into the final against
Chiselhurst.
Chiselhurst proved to be too strong
for them, however. Rockets were
handed a 9-5 loss.
or
Chiselhurst had to travel a tougher
road to find the 'B' championship.
They met the St. Marys Desperados
after their first loss of the tourney and
won the game 12-5. Chiselhurst then
came up against Howard Jones and
pulled out a 7-3 victory, assuring
themselves of a spot in the 'B' final.
Roy's Boys captured the 'C' title
after a hard fought battle against Ex-
eter Inn-dians. Roy's Boys won the 'C'
final 15-5.

Express out of OBA
Exeter Express were knocked out
of OBA final action this week after
dropping two straight games to Sar-
nia by scores of 11-5 and 8-6.
Express jumped out to a 5-2 lead in
the third inning in game one of the
series, only to stall out and be blasted
off the field in the seventh when Sar-
nia scored eight runs.
After falling behind 2-0 in the top of
the third, Exeter came to life. Dan
Macdonald and Kevin Hern walked
and then scored on a double by Dave
Shaw. Shaw and Walt Parkinson
came in after Brian Mercer hit a
home run, making the score 5-2.
Starting pitcher Kevin Drager held
Sarnia off for the next three innings
until the roof caved in in the seventh.
Walking the first two batters,
Dragon allowed a homerun and two
singles before he was relieved by
'Mercer. The onslaught continued and
Mercer was replaced by Jeff Fuller
who finished the inning. But by that
time, the damage was done.
In game two of the series, Exeter
turned in a more controlled perfor-
mance, but the result was much the
same.
Express took the lead in the first in-
ning when Macdonald singled and
then came home on a series of errors.
They increased their lead in the top
of the third when Shaw doubled,
bringing in Drager, but Sarnia quick-
ly countered with a run to keep the
game close.
In the fourth inning, Barry
Baynham hit a sacrifice bunt to score
Parkinson, Dave Bogart stole home
and singles by Macdonald and Drager
brought in two more runs to make the
score 6-1.
Again, Exeter stalled and Sarnia
came on, scoring two runs in the fifth,
one in the sixth, two in the eighth and
one in the ninth to win the game and
push Express out of the series.
Great Lakes action
Express are currently embroiled in
a round robin playoff series with
Seaforth and Walkerton in Great
Lakes action. The winner of the series
will advance to meet Strathroy in the
championship final.
Express eliminated Walkerton on
the weekend after beating them 8-6
and 10-3.
Game one of the Walkerton -Exeter
series was an even battle throughout.
Exeter took a one run lead in the first
inning when Greg Hern singled and
then stole home but Walkerton came
back in the second with two runs of
their own. They followed that up with
another run in the third inning which
established them solidly in the lead.
Exeter changed that in the bottom
of the third when Kevin Hern doubl-
ed to bring in Macdonald and Greg
Hern and Mercer singled, scoring
Kippen resident places eighth out of 4,700
Alike Neil.
Leading 4-3, Express built up a two
run lead in the bottom of the fourth
when Neil singled to bring in
Baynham.
Walkerton reshaped the game
again in the fifth when they plated
three more runs. Exeter was quick to
answer, however. Dave Hayter and
Baynham scored when Macdonald hit
a triple in the bottom of the fifth.
A home run by Pete Heeney in the
sixth gave Express the win.
The second game of the series was
less balanced than the first. Walker-
ton took a three run lead by the third
inning, and maintained it until the
fifth, holding Exeter to just two hits
in that time. •
In a sudden flurry of hits, Exeter
brought home four runs in the fifth on
doubles by Mercer and Will Sentjens
and singles by Brian Horner and Paul
Gilmour.
Mercer singled in the sixth to bring
in Kevin Hern.
In the seventh, Kevin Hern knock-
ed out a home run to score Dave At-
thill and Heeney. A triple put Mercer
into scoring position and then Horner
doubled, allowing him to score.
Hayter stole home after hitting a
double t round out the scoring.
Neil went the distance on the
mound for Exeter, striking out nine
batters and allowing eight hits.
Mann is 'high Canadian' at Grand Am
Brad Mann a resident of the Kippen
area, has just returned from the
United States after competing in the
week-long Grand American Trap
Shoot in Vandalia, Ohio, and he has
brought with him some impressive
results.
The 25 -year-old marksman shot 98
out of a possible 100 targets to tie for
high Canadian shooter and finish in a
tie for eighth spot over-all in the com-
petition. That's nothing to sneeze at,
considering the competition is made
of 4,700 of the best trap shooters from
the U.S., Canada and Europe.
Mann has entered the Grand
American handicap category for the
past five years, but this is the fit'st
time he was able to finish in the
money. He was awarded a trophy and
cash prizes for his performance.
He noted that the competition is of
a high calibre because participants
have to pay their own way. Those who
aren't capable of winning aren't likely
to spend $1,000 for a week of shooting.
"It's (the competition) a lot tougher
down there because it's all the good
shooters that go," Mann said.
Mann was surprised that he shot as
well as he did, but he noted that he
was more accurate than usual during
the competition, largely because of
the range.
"They have more consistent targets
than we have in Ontario," Mann ex-
plained. "They fly truer and break up
nicer.
"You have a more consistent idea
of which way they're going to fly -- if
one flys there, the next is going to fly
there."
Now that he has succeeded at the
Grand American Trap Shoot, things
won't get better for him in next year's
competition. Mann will be given a
higher handicap, which is measured
by the number of yards the gunner
stands away from the trap. He's not
willing to make any predictions for
the 1988 shoot.
Mann was introduced to trap
shooting in 1976 by his Grandfather,
John Anderson. Mann said that
Anderson taught him how to shoot in
the past 11 years.
"I've improved a lot, score -wise,"
Mann said. "The whole thing' is
concentration."
Mann has won six other class shoots
this season. He uses a Perazzi MX3 12
gauge shot gun.

tom of the second when Pete Tuckey
reached on an error. Dan Heywood
singled and they both scored.
